  • The NJ DEP Division of Parks and Forestry recently proposed a map that closes 2/3 of the unpaved roads in Wharton State Forest. This impacts ALL recreational use, not just motorized. Please watch the video and review the information below!
Details on the history and rationale for what's being proposed as well as a link to provide public comments can be found here: nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/wh...
Open Trails NJ has a petition against this action you can sign, even if you don't live in NJ: www.opentrailsnj.org/petition/
SEMA has a page where you can contact state representatives to express your displeasure with the proposed Visiting Vehicle Use Map: p2a.co/KE55Hqd

Good job spreading the word! I share the same message when & where I can. I attended the stakeholder meeting & expressed my concerns. All this MAP will do is limit travel to the good guys.

This map is for Parks and Forestry’s benefit, not the public’s. Parks and Forestry need to do their job and enforce existing laws, not overburden legal forest users.

Good luck! We have the same problem here where trails get locked due to bad actors.

It’s amazing that we collect more taxes than nearly another other state and every time they discuss budget cuts it hits our state parks first. My guess is they’re looking to recoup the funds spent as a result of fire truck not being able to reach wildfires- causing them to FINALLY release the funds to resurface the roads that rangers have been complaining about not getting for over a decade. If they had any brains they would have put enough money into it- to turn it into more of a destination for tourists than to let it fall into shambles due to mostly locals doing what they shouldn’t back there.

I would love to see Wharton get more funding. Nobody wants the irresponsible users getting away with illegal vehicle use, driving off of designated roads, dumping, etc. Enforcement is needed, not closures to address those things.

I support NJ DEP and the road closure, but I fear that enforcement will be inadequate. 200 miles of roads is still a very large network. The comparison map shows a very large road network will remain and if you feel those are not adequate for your recreational needs, stay in your respective states, and encourage your local public lands to be destroyed, or a private landowner to open their lands to the destruction. What is happening is not the ethical use of public land, and those who are using lands as intended are not going to be subject to inconvenience.
If foot travel or horseback, and possibly bicycle, was to become the only way to access large areas of the Pine Barrens, while it wouldn't be the most convenient thing to happen, I would support that, as well. The miles of roads in Wharton SF is astounding, yet it isn't even that large. I was driving them in the late 1990s in a sedan. From what I can tell, this is nearly impossible for people today thanks to the abuse which has been inflicted on the roads and forest by those who have no concept of an outdoor ethic, and certainly nothing which would be a regarded as a wilderness ethic.

I appreciate your thoughtful perspective. If nothing else, I agree that this will do little to aid enforcement. I am concerned about the comments John Cecil made to the Inquirer last year about paving roads after the closures and wonder if this is really DEP’s plan. Neither “side” of this situation wins then. www.inquirer.com/news/new-jersey-department-of-environmental-protection-pinelands-wharton-forest-off-road-vehicles-20230209.html

You don’t go there but you want it closed. WTF is wrong with you. Tired of all you people trying to cancel everything because of your uneducated opinion.

Great idea making it illegal to ride/drive already illegal vehicles in the state forest while stripping access from 1,000s of people who use the roads with legal vehicles. I’m sure all those illegal riders will follow the new rules!
