I was waiting for Lucy to try and jump onto your shoulder, looked like she was pretty tempted to give it a go!
Crazy cat 🐈
I had my hands and voice reflexively ready to yell and catch her...phew, I just knew Nathan was gonna get it, right on camera...uff da!
How could any cat resist all that sawdust!?!
Benjamin Voetberg me too, was watching kitty waiting..
I was thinking the same thing...lol....👍😺👍
Sorry we all missed your early comments watching Lucy lining up for a leap behind your line of sight
I completely missed what he said. I was transfixed watching the cat.
The man who never makes a mistake-never makes anything!!
agreed
Was waiting for Lucy to take a flying leap onto his back hahahaha
I didn’t know that I missed seeing black walnut. Boy does this log come to life. It is interesting to see other trees grain structure, color and etc. Black walnut is the best.
I love that your cats are featuring more and more :)
I am a wood turned who loves to watch you reveal the beauty hidden in those ugly old logs. When I turn wood it never gets old. It's like opening presents when you cut and reveal all that figure. Love it.
Superior expertise ; I was totally impressed ! I was the sawyer at a Chip-N -Saw Mark IV Saw Mill for six years. I averaged 80 thousand board feet per 10 hour shift of lumber and had a maximum production of 128 thousand bf in a 10 hour shift .
Your introduction was
impressive : so was your rationale when explaining your decisions on cutting the lag .
Therefore, I subscribed to your excellent blog .
Some of your cutting off of the knots should have been one inch because short pieces of black walnut could have been used for making valuable small projects : jewelry boxes and short trim .
That log made some one of the most impressive cuts that I have ever seen ! Salute !!
That black walnut is drop dead gorgeous
Clearly , you know what your doin . That black walnut looks beautiful . Well done friend .
Thanks 👍
That hurricane, to me, looked like a skeletal hand reaching for a door knob.
It was hilarious watching Lucy trying to decide whether or not to attempt a jump into your shoulder.
The black walnut grain was just beautiful
Love your cats, bonus feature of you videos.
Since I first watched your show I’ve seen a few others. You certainly do the best of informing us as to the lumber and your thoughts on positioning the cuts to get the best. I always enjoy your presentation. Thanks for a good job.
Thanks 👍
Great to see those big beautiful slabs in the background knowing they will end up in furniture.
Something to watch on TV. This is right up there with Gunsmoke :)
That slab with the hurricane eye is one of the prettiest you shown.
I agree! That was absolutely gorgeous and all I could hear after the water was poured on he slab was the slot machine emptying itself into all the buckets I would need for my walnut gold!
I love you appreciate and respect the timber you cut. How about a video describing the parts and workings of your mill for us gearheads?
It certainly was a very apt description when you used Hurricane to describe this timber grain Nathan. What brilliant slabs, slabs that will be worth a LOT of money. Cheers on that one mate, Don from South Australia.
The Grain on that Walnut is gorgeous!
Gotta love a walnut slab. It’s like unwrapping a gift.
agreed
Lucy looks like a hard worker around the mill
she puts me behind, very neeeeedy cat, mama was in the house,
I love your channel. Your knowledge and explanations of how and why you cut the logs certain ways is something I really appreciate. White pine, Black walnut...it takes all kinds. So, check this out...I love the music at the end of this video (and what you play in many of your videos), but not because I'm a fiddle player or banjo picker. I play trumpet and trombone; grew up in the suburbs of Chicago; played in rock bands covering Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Tower of Power; went to college for my music degree in Chicago; played in big band jazz bands and bombastic orchestras playing Bruckner, Mahler, and Wagner. For over 40 years people have asked me 'what is your favorite kind of music?'. My answer has always been 'There are two kinds of music. Good music and bad music. I like good music.' I would recommend your channel as a source of good music any day! Come for the sawmill, stay for the music. Or vice versa!
my fav music might surprise some, I listen to everything from Johnny Cash, to Led Zeppling, Tool and classical, I have no fav genre, just like you said good music, great songs have no classification,
appreciate you watching,
@@OutoftheWoods0623 Please: The artist and album name.
Got milk? Hee, hee. That Lucy shore is friendly and cute. I too, thought she was gonna leap to your shoulder just to get more attention. Nice log, I'll be waiting for the finale!👍👍
Very glad arms family homestead pointed you out I've truly enjoyed your content
Appreciate it
I learn something every time I watch thank you so much for your teaching!!! Take care !!!
thanks Ken,
That was a beautiful black walnut
Excellent video, beautiful walnut and great music. Watching you on the night shift. Everything here in lockdown. Keep up the good work. 👍🏴
Thanks buddy
That wood is insanely beautiful 🤩
each cut is like finding a new treasure
👍
You had some gorgeous grain there, in that walnut! Just lovely! Thank you for explaining why you make the cuts. As a layman, it certainly helps with understanding what is happening! 😀
Thanks for watching
While I certainly see the eye of the storm in the wood, I can also see the eye of an octopus (or of a whale) too. Truly a gorgeous piece of wood! Thanks for your videos.
looks like a bird to me
Wow just beautiful
very nice black walnut
I didn't know that you could cut a post out of a log without the pith running through the center, so now I know I can get more than one post out of every log. Thanks. I need a lot of post, so now I can get at least 4 post out of every log. 👍
Mother Nature sure makes the most beautiful art
Beautiful nuff said
I remember many years ago reading that folks back in the day who were working by hand, pit sawing for fine furniture, etc., got to where they could look at the bark and tell a lot about the wood inside the log so they didn't waste effort on so-so wood when they wanted furniture grade and didn't waste fine wood on boxes, etc. I noted the twist in much of the bark in that walnut. Kind of interesting sort of thing to study in the future. There is crotch figure and then there is crotch figure, and there can be glory in the rest of a piece of wood as well. Something I am enjoying watching as well as learning about the basics of running a saw mill. I do know the old boys could walk out and fell a maple for the best fiddle back figure, for instance, just by looking at the bark. (I made a couple of violins back when I could still hear.)
"didn't waste fine wood on boxes, etc" :: someone once found two goods pallets made of walnut wood.
O my God the best Wood my eyes looking at this.
Sweeeeeet looking timber 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I have never seen black walnut before and the grain is beautiful. I am finding it very interesting watching you do this.
Thanks for watching
Remarkable wood!
Stay safe down there Nathan my sawmill mentor.
Ray Zickrick yes sir. U2
You have more fun being stuck inside than anyone else, Thanks for sharing ...
Beautiful piece of walnut for sure!!
Thanks 👍
Lucy looked like she wanted to pounce on you at the beginning! 😂 White pine bark has totally different look than the yellow pine. Very similar look on the inside though. I enjoy the video. 👍👍
yes, white also has less pitch on the boards, very stable stuff, enjoy working with it,
Out of the Woods - good to know. Thanks for the insight.
Wow! She’s full of Fire! I pray she lands in the right shop because that piece deserves much respect!
Now that is true beauty

Nathan, your excitement is infectious, and I can appreciate everyone else's enjoyment of that crazy-looking walnut log. The innards are truly among the most spectacular you've ever opened!---But, I'm unabashedly excited when I see the knotty pine get exposed!!!
thanks Alana, appreciate you, take care out there,
@@OutoftheWoods0623 Appreciate the wishes. Still seeing patients, adding layers of protection for all of us. (I'm loving my rain, even being out in it, but I'm not seeing anyone on dirt roads this month!)
Beautiful grain figure in both pieces. Thank you for sharing this experience!
Nathan, I'd watch the next 20 videos if all you were cutting was pine. Love to see what's inside and that ole sawmill workin. It's a joy for me. And since I'm not buying a sawmill, I have delight watching yours. A surprise in every log, just like Cracker Jack! Thanks Kindly! Blessings and Good Health to All there on the home stead! DaveyJO in Pa.
thanks buddy,
That's a nice piece of walnut
Nathan you have definitely taught us that White Pine is nicer than Yellow Pine. It even has a nicer grain.(imho)
Black is right for that Walnut!
Really beautiful!
That black walnut is absolutely beautiful. The hints of green in there. . . . man that would make a beautiful table, or anything for that matter.
Gorgeous buddy 😊😊👍👍👍👍💖
Thanks for talking it out. Excellent explanation.
Fine Fine Fine!
That Lucy Cat looks like she wants to jump onto that hat of yours!
Great looking lumber
👍👍
Vortex effect really nice!!!
I'm always jealous of the stuff you get to mill!

Beautiful walnut once again. I love watching the pine also . Stay dry and the best to you and your family.

Good GOD that log is gorgeous. I can just see the table I would have made out of it.

Your looking sharp...matching hat with suspenders, pants and cool looking shirt.
I think Black Walnut is absolutley fabulous.
I have to boards here and I also have a giant BW tree in my yard.
She is a beauty, those patterns are spectacular.
Thanks Nathan. Walnut on your mill is always eye catching. It's like opening gifts on Christmas morning! Stay safe & well my friend.
Thanks buddy
Hello from North Alabama, we usually get the weather a few hours before y'all do. Trees are a lot like people, going through a few storms in life makes you more interesting on the inside
well said,
omg! beautiful!
Really really like that walnut cut on first log..
great video with good explanation
Good news is, we have slight chance of rain and warm temps starting Friday. Nice time to be working outside
Good morning from St John Parish, Louisiana 28 Jan 21.
It must smell absolutely wonderful in there!
It does!
Pounce Lucy, pounce! There's BOUND to be a mouse in that beard!!! :D
Nice vid(s), I can almost taste the air in there. Greetings from Sweden!
Thanks! 😃
Wow that is really pretty.
Thanks buddy
Your videos are outstanding; your description of how& why you're cutting these logs is great. Please keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
I bet that black walnut smelled absolutely heavenly when being cut!
Yes 👍👍
Absolutely gorgeous walnut!
Thanks buddy
Teach. Great video. I love the way you explain your method for sawing each piece of timber. Great education for a city guy that has never seen a sawmill. Keep up the great craftsmanship that is hard to find in today’s digital world.
Thanks. Appreciate you watching
That was a close one, Nathan. She had you dead-to-rights, all lined up. I've lived with a missile-cat before and you just can't turn your back on them when their at eye level.
That 'eye' reminded me of Van Gogh's painting 'Starry Night'. 😊
I really wanted Lucy to jump! 😁
👍👍👍
That was great looking into the slab in my minds eye it was deep down into the eye of the storm. Just very clear i almost fell into the slab while watching it. Top job mate. 👍🏻🇦🇺
Thanks buddy
Wow that is some stunning wood!
thank you for watching,
Nathan, great job. Really enjoy your work. The figure in the walnut slabs is insane...crazy banding and looks like some curl, too. The figure patterns are similar to Koa. I would also say the sapwood adds really a nice contrast. Keep the vids coming!
Nathan those are beautiful boards. There are so many uses for those boards.
I appreciated what you said about yielding the best boards from logs when I visited the mills such as Andersen Windows, Morgan Company in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Also, I was involved in production with ROW Window Company in Rockdale, Illinois. In some cases, they got shop grade lumber in by the carload. Now, I'm involved with a mill that specializes in cutting hard maple from logs for flooring. I love the smell of sawdust.
So glad to see you still cuttin brother !
Nice milling job Sir
Right on Nathan 👍 I'm like a few others. I kept waiting for the cat to leap on you😂
😂😂😂😂
Good american small business at work. By american. Good looking stuff brother
thanks Cody, appreciate it, Magnolia is next then Butternut,
Nice cant wait
Pretty sure 9:30 is he nicest way to say, "think about what the F you are doing before you do it"! Sounds just like my Pops and I love ie it!
agreed
This is amazing! Ahh, your cat Lucy is like..."Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my closeup". What does one board go for if it is perfection plus?
I like the way you get so many beautiful slabs .I've never looked at a tree the way I do now.amazing 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
