Honestly my favorite crystal collection video thus far! You have such a unique collection, and you explained everything so perfectly, while keeping the pace quick and watchable. I loved this!
One thing I learned when I started collecting 40 years ago was that its not about quantity rather more about quality and rarity. Most people go after what is most colorful and stands out but that isn't always necessarily what makes the best investment. Yes, the longer you collect and more you invest minerals can be great investments. However, many things that you find in almost every rock shop and certainly most meta-physical shops will be low-end and fairly common although pretty and showy. Its getting allot harder to afford high end minerals. The cost of rare minerals and even fairly common species in high quality has sky-rocketed. In the end, it is all about what brings you happiness but if your looking to minerals as an investment, be prepared to shell out allot of money. One thing that helps is to join a good mineral club, get active within it, go on field trips and make friends. This allows you to make contacts with older collectors who possibly started collecting back when things were available and less expensive or were collectable. Establish good relationships with these people because very often they will help you upgrade your collection and hook you up with rare or hard to find classic localities. When I first started, I fairly quickly accumulated a sizable volume of colorful rocks and I thought I had really done something. Then I got to looking at how common and plentiful all of my pretty rocks were. They were at every rock show, every gem shop and even at some flea markets. Then I visited my first serious rockhound who had been in the hobby for years and marveled at his collection. I had very few of the things that he had, fact most of the shops that I visited didn't have what he had. I tried to trade with him but I had nothing that he wanted to trade for but he gave me a few "culled" pieces that he had that started me off on the journey to higher end rarer specimens. Along with field collecting I managed to begin to be able to offer something in trade for better and better pieces. Suddenly my collection of average common pretty rocks went from a thousand pieces worth $1,000.00 to a couple hundred pieces worth $5,000.00. I was investing in rare and higher end material and it was allot more challenging than when I first started. Now I seldom find anything in most rock shops, flea markets and certainly meta-physical shops of interest. Instead, I was trading and buying from private collectors and dealers at rock shows and even finding my own stuff that people wanted. I was also buying through mail-order from reputable dealers. Remember this was long before the Internet! I am up to over 2000 pieces today but these are pieces many of which are rare or from sources that are no longer available. I'm getting up in age and being older in a world that I see falling apart I have slowed down a bit, especially field collecting but I have allot of good memories. Hopefully you will stay with this hobby and the economy will allow you to invest in minerals but word of advice, if your looking for any of it to return an investment in 30-40-50 years from now, try to focus on the highest quality possible. Focus on rarity, even some "locality" pieces that aren't the best of their species can bring high dollar if they are from a locality that is no longer available or from a "one-time find" with the supply unlikely to produce any further. One of the other things I did too was too put focus on something specific that I saw as a good investment. The state I live in fortunately has a rich history of diversity when it comes to mineral wealth. It also has allot of minerals that have become highly sought after not only from dealers outside the state but especially from within so there is seldom a problem finding someone to buy your material if you had to sell. It is however, getting very difficult to find high end piece from here. My collection is 2/3rds my home state and 1/3rd worldwide pieces but as always.....quality, rarity and aesthetics govern more so than quantity, size and pretty.
