  • We sent 10 long distance racing pigeons to the National Flying Club (International) where they raced from Tarbes in Southern France back to their home in England which is a straight line distance of 529 miles. We timed 5 in race time, however the other 5 did also return home.

    No duteeh - I do NOT use peanuts at any time in my lofts. My birds are tame because I only ever breed from tame birds and the corn you see them eating is either maze or peas. Creating a bond from an early age with the birds gets them tame and fast trapping is achieved by training.

    WOW, Do you hand raise the squabs? It's either that or ALOT of time spent with them love to see birds so at ease with their owner!

    @shinglehillclimber88 Před 12 lety

    i wish mine were that tame!

  • @meridklt
    @meridklt  Před 12 lety

    I race my own relaxed interpretation of widowhood/roundabout except for the 500 mile races where they are paired up for natural. Not that I think this is best, but just to make sure some hens don't pair up together, which they will do in the middle of summer.

  • @meridklt
    @meridklt  Před 11 lety

    No, I do not hand rear them. But as I only breed 8 chicks each season, that in itself means each bird bird has more of my time.
    My system for getting them tame is firstly never, ever frighten them when they are in the loft and whilst they are in the nest bowel after their eyes are open, three times each day I lift the bowel out and stroke them for about a minute, but not picking them up. That way I have found when weaned into their own loft they are extremely tame.

  • @ieguy3
    @ieguy3 Před 12 lety

    As beautiful as they all were, I think I was most impressed by the red. A feral???? I can only presume it had some homer bloodlines in there if you got him back from a 500+ race! Wow! Hat's off to you, sir! BTW I noted you fly both sexes. Do you double widow or fly natural?

    i am just a backyard fancier too who started back in the sport after a couple of years break. to start back up i purchased an entire loft of birds at a clearance sale. these had flown both inland and channel races for there previous owner with success. im just finding it a bit overwhelming trying to sort them out and trying to find the good ones from the bad as theres quite a few there, im trying to get all the advice i can as they are long distance birds and i used to fly sprint pigeons.thanks

    Do any of your pigeons not come home after a race?

  • @meridklt
    @meridklt  Před 11 lety +1

    Firstly I'm not suggesting I'm anything other than a small back yard fancier who likes to race for fun in all distances from sprint to long distance, and so not claiming to be an expert in any of the disciplines.
    I only breed/house 8 young birds each year and I try to give them just 2 races up to 110 miles, and then I stop them to mature into yearlings. Where again they are only raced in sprint races up to 180 miles and none will race long distance (500 plus miles) until 3 years of age.

  • @meridklt
    @meridklt  Před 12 lety +1

    Very rarely do they not come home and just like I sometimes have a hawk kill them in my garden, I'm sure that the hawks are the reason when missing from a race.

  • @meridklt
    @meridklt  Před 13 lety

    Lots of time and patience which must start when they are squabs and they are also bred out of parents who have the same steady character. If you grab at youngster and frighten them, in the vast majority of case you can forget about them ever becoming tame as they will have no trust in you.
    I have no squabs for sale.

  • @meridklt
    @meridklt  Před 12 lety

    They are fed Gem Supplements Premium Corn the same as my sprinters.
    The have a hen/cock for 3 hours before basketing.

  • @meridklt
    @meridklt  Před 12 lety

    I do not keep any specific bloodlines, as breeding winner to winner is my first consideration and this subsequently means most well known bloodlines will be watered down in influence.

  • @meridklt
    @meridklt  Před 12 lety

    They will do this once they are tame and my method is on a previous answer below.

    Don't understand your first question.
    I feed really good corn from Gem Supplements and if you Google the name they have a web site.

  • @meridklt
    @meridklt  Před 12 lety +2

    Do NOT purchase old birds because no one sells birds that are good producers.
    Only purchase young chicks.
    Do some research and purchase from a person who races pigeons successfully and regularly wins.
    If he is an honest man he will sell you fit and healthy chicks.
    Remember, you can buy the pigeon but not the man, which means it takes a good master and a good pigeon to win races, not just a good pigeon.

    would you advise not racing young birds and let them develop into yearlings before their first race .would just like to say that the condition of your pigeons is exceptional.
