- Chocolate Pie
2 1/2 cups sugar
2/3 cup corn starch
6 Tablespoons cocoa
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 cups milk
6 egg yolks
4 Tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons vanilla
Mix, sugar, cornstarch, cocoa, and salt in a large sauce pan. Whisk in about half of the milk to dampen. Add egg yolks, and whisk well. Then stir in the rest of the milk. Cook, stirring constantly, over medium-high heat until thick. Remove from the stove and stir in butter and vanilla until butter is melted. Pour into a baked pie shell. Top with meringue using the recipe below.
MERINGUE:
6 egg whites
3/4 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon corn starch
1/2 teaspoon Cream of Tartar
Begin whipping egg whites with a whisk. In a separate bowl combine sugar and corn starch. Once egg whites are at a soft peak, slowly spoon in sugar one spoonful at a time. Sprinkle in the Cream of Tartar and continue beating to stiff peaks. Spoon onto pie filling, sealing the meringue to the edges of the crust. Bake in 400° oven for eight minutes or until lightly browned. Cool completely before slicing.
Just a tip on saving time to remove lumps from cocoa, cornstarch and sugar: get out your old timey sifter and sift right into your pan. This saves so much time and lump free. Love your recipes. Thank You.
I looked at my old sifter this week and thought “ why do I keep this?” Now I know, I want to make this pie, I will use you tip.
I always use a hand held strainer, like you use for lemons/oranges. My sifter only sees flour.
Reminds me of the film The Help
Yep! If you don't, it takes forever----and it's still not mixed.
Where did you get that deep dish pie plate? I really like it!
You are so precise and calm, and you don't rush through the recipes, So much Appreciated, Thank you!
Amen 🙏

Mom use to make this
Looks delicious. I love how Melissa puts your recipes in description. Wish others would do the same.
Thanks for sharing, love your videos.
You are so welcome! We really appreciate that you are watching!
Agreed!
I totally agree. If you go on a site they don't I just never save them as not much sense. Your cooking site is my favourite by far
I love how he always gets everything out of the bowls
ME TOO!!!!❤
Juussst a touch OCD about that.
@@robertmyers2813Old-school, not OCD
I always sift my cocoa powder with the sugar & corn starch. Helps eliminate any lumps. Also, I like fresh whipped cream on my pie.
You can make this into a German chocolate pie by adding shaved chocolate pieces ,chopped pecans , coconut in bottom before adding pie filling. Refrigerate then add fresh whipped cream on top. Just a variation but mybfamily loves it. Yours looks delicious thank you.
That sounds great! Thank you so much for the idea. We appreciate great feedback like that!
Yummy!
I love PIES! I’d rather make and eat a pie than a cake ANY day! Love your German Chocolate Pie recipe! Ty!
My boyfriend loves chocolate and I would love to try this for him but I don't think I would get any!!! Thanks for your time and effort you put your ♥ in all your recipes much love 😍 Michele Hotchkiss Damalio Patchogue long Island NY 😮
I just made this pie for my hubby and all he said when he came downstairs to see it cooling was "WHOA!" He licked the spatula clean from the chocolate filling and said he already knows its gonna be amazing! The hardest part of this is gonna be letting it cool completely before cutting into it! Thanks for the awesome recipe!
We’re so glad to hear you are enjoying this! And it’s nice to know someone else enjoys “licking” the spatula, too!
@@comesitatmytable9044 gotta "make sure" none of that "yummy goodness" is wasted! Besides, you're NEVER too old to schlick the batter off the spatula, bowl or, beaters-some things, you just never out-grow!😁🤭🤓 Doug
One of the most relaxing cooking channels I've ever seen. I'm a whole food plant based vegan and think about how to veganize all these dishes ❤
Thank you so much for your very nice and encouraging comment. We really do appreciate that you are watching our channel.
Thank you for all your awesome time, energy and recipes. You have found a way to bring all my childhood favorite recipes that have been from my Grandmother's kitchen, into my kitchen. Recipes I never got the chance to get or thought were impossible for me to recreate! Love the cooking classes you give yo all of us. 😊
I used to make this a lot some time ago, then for some unknown reason I stopped. And guess what, when I was craving this pie, I had lost my recipe. I searched all of my cookbooks and online to no avail. The recipes were similar but not THE ONE! I don't know how I stumbled upon your channel, but it was providence because, low and behold, you were making THE pie! Thank you. I love your channel and your instruction technique. Also, I love the interaction between you and your wife. Wonderful!
I also love the way this husband and wife talked to each other especially when he calls her bab
Sure wish I was sitting at your table for that pie! I’m sure it was delicious! 😋. Thanks for the recipe
I lost mine also really needed this thanks
I so enjoy watching, you and Melissa interacting about the recipes, but you, Tom have a way of making the Video so relaxing, yet informative with tips as well! I am glad I found your Channel. Thank you, and May God bless you and yours
I how never watched anyone actually make a chocolate meringue pie.
Thank you for doing it for us 🇺🇸!
Bless him and his PRECIOUS family REAL BIG, FATHER-GOD!
Including the meringue, you put 3-1/4 cups of sugar in that one pie. And six large eggs! Couldn't believe it! One cup of sugar is sufficient for the pie and a couple of tablespoons for the meringue. Two eggs are quite enough.
Thank you, thank you for showing me how to make meringue! I always thought you had to put it on a hot filling. That’s probably why my meringues always shrunk and went flat.
I was told the same thing and probably why I had the same results as you. I was blown away when Tom let the filling cool and it worked! Love all their videos!!!
Growing up my grandmother on dads side would often make me chocolate meringue pie knowing it was my favorite. Watching you prepare it brought back happy memories and I learned a few things too. I am anxious to try it out and have all the ingredients ❤
Same here from gramma to favorite! ❤
Awww. Enjoy. ♥
Was your grandmother in nc? She sounds like my grandma and y'all have the same last names lol
@@TABBZ-dl7wk Actually she was from Alabama and came to Texas in a covered. Fun fact to share. I have a cousin on my mom’s side that is really into ancestry and traces the Greer’s from NC.
@@TABBZ-dl7wk My full name is Mackie Greer McCauley (MGM)😁with my middle name being my mom’s maiden name. Hope I didn’t bore you with info.😉
At our house we call this old time Hershey’s Chocolate pie recipe Vickie’s Chocolate Pie as my sister always makes it for the holidays. Everyone loves it! 😋 She tops hers with a dollop of whipped cream instead of the meringue.
That would be great, too! We appreciate that you've watched our video.
My mother's family had a chocolate pie recipe somewhat similar to yours. I loved that pie. Watching this video brought back happy memories.
This pie is a chocolate custard pie because of the milk and eggs. A cream pie is usually refrigerated.
I want to give this recipe a try. It sounds rich and creamy.
This is the recipe I have been looking for. This will be my go to for chocolate pie from now on.
My elderly neighbor used to make this and she would invite me in for a slice. It was so wonderful! Like a warm hug! 😀❤️❤️❤️ She has a special place in Heaven.
When I watch you cook it brings back memories when I watched my late Mama cook. It is such a blessing to this almost 70 year old country boy stuck in the city. Thank you for all your recipes.
WOW I can't wait to make this pie. It looks absolutely perfect, just a good looking pie. Thank you for always sharing your recipes and explaining them one step at a time. I know a few people in my house that will just love this pie
We are so happy to have you enjoying our recipes! Thank you for watching.
My hubby loves Chocolate pie I'm going to be making it soon! Ty for showing us!❤ God bless y'all
Looks beautiful!
I bet it's yummy!
Thank you, kindly for sharing your cooking skills!
Thank you, Melissa, for filming so beautifully!
Can't wait to make this pie! ❤
Delicious😂
Thank you for the cornstarch secret, definitely going to try this, no more seeping meringue!!
I just discovered your channel recently and I am so glad I did! Your recipes are good down home cooking and you're so calm and thorough preparing them. This chocolate pie looks amazing! 😋 Definitely a must try! ❤ from 🇨🇦
I just made your chocolate pie following every ingredient. It’s fresh and ready to eat and we did. It is decadently delicious. So rich, creamy and chocolatey. I love how you scrape your bowls to get all of the fillings. 😊 My husband enjoyed watching your videos too. He asked ‘you’re going to make this aren’t you?’ Yum yum 😋
I love it when the cooks scrape everything out. It drives nuts to see a bunch of stuff left in a can or bowl!!
@@melaneymattson3733 Me too, happens all of the time except here. 😀

The key to having it all to yourself: “Ewww, it really tastes bad. Something went wrong. It’s not good at all.” 😂😂😂
Looks delicious Tom!🍽️👩🏻🍳
I have been making chocolate and coconut pies for probably 55 years and had my granny show me and then our cafe cooks show me also and never did anyone explain stiff peaks so well! Thank you! I never had trouble getting them but never knew exactly how! We have always made 2 at a time! Via microwave with Pyrex batter bowl
Pour out half and add coconut and then cocoa to remaining half! I thought I had commented but maybe not! Microwave 4 min, stir 3 more min stir and 1 min more! Normally ready at this time! Top with meringue and sprinkle coconut on top of the one with coconut! My fav is coconut but my family loves chocolate!
I love this! My mom used to make chocolate and lemon meringue pies like this with cooked filling, real crust, and meringue. I want to try this and love that you show every step. It’s easy to get lazy and just make one of those pudding pies with graham cracker crust.
This brings back fond memories of Mommy. She wouldn't do anything as fancy as your scrumtious looking pie. She'd cook a box jello pudding and milk on the stove, pour them into premade crusts she baked beforehand and heap cool whip on top instead of your delectable meringe lol. it was chilled and eaten cold and she called them chocolate cream pie . It wasn't fancy but it was Momma :) Thanks for stirring memories of Her and thanks for all of your great recipes.
That is exactly what I have done for years! My husband is very allergic to milk so I have to use a milk substitute. I use a chocolate graham cracker crust though and add chocolate chips to topping. Thankfully milk substitute options have improved so I’m slowly trying new recipes. Ty for posting this great recipe! I also make a butterscotch pudding pie the same way that the whole family insists on having at Thanksgiving and Christmas!
Tom I too love that you always scrape out your bowl, it makes me crazy when I watch cooking shows and they waste so many ingredients. I just started watching your channel and I’m totally addicted! You and your wife are so sweet together and I really enjoy your recipes!! Can’t wait to keep watching and this chocolate pie will be my first one to try as I am a chocoholic also!! Nothing wrong with that!!🤣
I have made this pie recipe for a long time my mother bless her soul taught all her girls how to make this pie we always had it all the holidays my son has to have it every Christmas it is a family tradition so it ends up on the table just for him ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
LOOKING good 👍😀👍😀👍👍
Just to let you know, this is now my absolute favorite chocolate pie recipe! Thank you so much for sharing!

Kentuckian here…this is close to the recipe from my great granny. She always made it in her iron skillet. I’m 55 now so I’ve been the keeper of the pie recipe. Your recipe seems a lot easier so I’m going to give it a try! Love granny but a good chocolate pie is worth a change. I think she’s forgive me😂
Your pie recipe is almost the same as mine. It’s delicious! I now just cook it in the microwave- much easier. Your videos are great!
Thank you so much for watching our channel. We really do appreciate it.
Looks fantastic! Can't wait to make this pie!!!
Just love your recipes and watching you cook! Thanks for doing this!❤
I must make this. Can’t wait to taste it. Thank you for the recipe.

Btw, it's a chocolate meringue pie, and I can eat a full half of one by myself. 😂

Love this recipe and your relaxed style. Go WILD CATS!!!!!!
Thanks for the info on the meringue! Never would’ve thought of adding the cornstarch!
The pie is STUNNING!!!! Yummy. Y'all are making me hungry.
I absolutely will! Thank you for the cornstarch ideas! The first one (for a customer) I didn’t have a good feeling about, so I made yours. I bake for a selective group. Keep up good work! Today, two lemon ice box pies and 3 chocolate!
That looks delicious. Thanks for such a detailed recipe. Who doesn’t love chocolate pie?! Yum yum! 😋
Looks soooooo good! Thanks for sharing, y’all! ❤❤❤❤

Absolutely perfect! My favorite pie ever but haven't had for years. May have to try one one for sure❣
Love the made-from-scratch pie fillings.

This looks easy and so delicious! I was looking for a chocolate pie recipe to make for my best friends birthday, and your recipe popped up! I'm so glad! I love your channel and have followed you two for a few months now. Your recipes are explained so simply! Thank you!
You are so welcome! We hope this pie is a great success for your best friend's birthday! Thank you so much for watching our channel.
Wow! it looks so delicious that I'm gonna have to make one.
Thanks for sharing.
This looks the pie my Mother made. I still have the brown wax paper bag recipe that came from, I think, a box of cocoa. It was the best!
First of all…great job using your opposite natural hand..i would have slopped stuff everywhere. 2nd…thanx for the tip about using the corn starch in the meringue. My Mom handed that almost exact recipe down to me from her Mom. Im 74. It is my FAVORITE dessert and has been since I was a small child, old enough to eat.😊
I don’t plan to make the pie but I find your videos so relaxing.
Thank you.
Oh my goodness... one of my favorites!! I'll be right over. 🏃♀️🤸♀️

OMG there is just nothing better than a true chocolate pie. Mom always used chocolate pudding, but never instant. And it came out alot like this. Been way too long. Looks great and l agree, can never be too much merengue.
Made this so good. I have never cooked pie before. My grandkids loved this. Enjoy your videos
Once again look good and I will try soon as I get ready too.
Loved your tip about the meringue. I’ve never tried putting cornstarch in it. Also appreciate your values.
REAL chocolate pie! Yum! I never had it until we moved to TN when I was 36. Just boxed junk before that! So delicious!
Got to try this pie! Just subscribed and I’m looking forward viewing other recipes of yours..Thank you .
