- Welcome everyone! Here's a collection of thoughts and observations about pro tennis player Alex DeMinaur as well as some distasteful humor. This is my first time making media, so please give me any advice you have for improving my content. I've also used pictures and videos from many different sources and as I improve my creating skills, I'll try to leave references for everything in the future. I noticed especially on the backhand that the movement is very short and even he seems to put his whole body weight into the stokes, it doesn't feel heavy. But suprisingly enough to reach top 10-20
Yes, he throws his body around so much, probably because he weighs so little. I want to make a shorter video about this as well and how it impacts his movement, not just his groundstrokes. Thanks for the input!

subbed man. out of all the players on tour, I follow alex the most, not just cause he's an aussie, but he seems to be the most "just one more ball" type of player the watch. His backhands is the past were so short, they looked almost identical to his return of serve, how he stares straight ahead and just lunges at the ball. I just came from his match with Stan at MC, and i could see the winners that weren't easy put aways at the net or the short angled one's he usually finds -- he's twisting a bit more. Maybe he's letting opponents get comfortable with a slower flatter bounce, and then surprising them with a fuller-bodied winner out of nowhere, idk. But if it wasn't for this video, i wouldn't have noticed it.
Since he started pushing his serve in the past 2 years, having it dip below 50% and then slowly building it back up again, i saw a lot of potential for him to keep improving other aspects of his game and no rely on brute effort the whole time so he can get more success in 5 setters. Plus he's still only 25. If Tsisipas can improve his backhand, im sure ADM can build this up too.

Your tennis knowledge is solid man. I think you need to pick an audience tho. The serious and very good analysis of Alex’s game doesn’t really go with humor geared towards 13 year -olds. I also don’t think there’s a single person alive who thinks there’s a chance Alex could get to the very top. He’s having a great season, but this is pretty obviously his ceiling and he’ll always get outgunned by the top guys who have much more weaponry.
Thank you, I appreciate the advice! Yes, I'm still in an experimenting stage to see what exactly my style is. Unfortunately, my jokes will miss quite often, especially early on as I practice telling them to a public audience (a.k.a. bombing for stand-up comics), and sometimes my analysis will miss too. As for what other people think about Alex, I'm more offering theories on why his tactics and mechanics fail to result in on-court weapons. If I can maintain the channel long term, I hope to make a video down the line if Alex makes some improvements.

Personally I like the memery. Too many tennis channels are dry and boring. Actually the sport itself is dry and takes itself too seriously. I think that's why it's not popular with young people. It's embarrassing, considering how global and respectable the sport is

Great job! I think that there is not enough deep analysis of player's play styles like this so I'd love to see more! I'm always looking for things the pros are doing that I can incorporate into my own game (which happens to be somewhat similar to De Minaur/Murray)

I think it's also increasingly a tall man's game. Unless you're jacked like Alcaraz, youre at a big disadvantage against someone taller with more power/less margin for error hitting down. it seems all the top players on tour are at least 6'2 or 3. Nole at 6'2 is sort of in between. The likes of Sinner, Medvedev, Zverev who are tall but mobile kind of dominate. I guess Rune is similar to Alcaraz, whereas Im honestly surprised Ruud holds his own.
Agreed, but I think this has always been true of tennis: The bigger guys develop weapons and fill out a large segment of the pro tour, but then the medium sized guys have amazing speed in addition to power, consistency, and offense and can build a complete game to win Slams. All of the big 4 (and I'd include Stan Wawrinka as well) were medium height guys, whereas the players around them (Del Potro, Berdych, Isner, later Zverev, Medvedev, Tsitsipas) were bigger with a few small frame exceptions (Nishikori, Ferrer, Davydenko). I would put Sinner in between Medvedev/Zverev and Djokovic (He also is right in between them in terms of height). Sinner is neither the typical tall player nor medium sized player, he is a mix and seems to be taking the best of both worlds. With his long arms allowing him to hit big while still moving better than the taller guys.
@@WhiffedOverhead great video for sure but tennis of old (wooden racquets, finesse over power) did not strike me as a sport of tall men. You say the big 4 were average (only in comparison to the likes of Del Potro because all of them were over 6 feet). The last player less than 6ft to win Wimbledon was Lleyton Hewitt, but before technology made serves from tall guys so devastating you had the game dominated by McEnroe, Connors, Borg, Laver, Rosewall, none of whom were anywhere near 6ft.

Indeed, Alex is really good, but limited against the absolute peak opposition. But he's already won many titles and spent time in the top 10. That's an incredible career for a player like him.

Also another reason that I am skeptical is his serve, he doesn’t really get much pace or do much with the serve to start in advantageous positions so he has to constantly be in neutral rallies on his own serve

This was great, super well done. I chalked up having a mediocre serve as to why he’ll never crack the top 6; just too hard to hold every serve game for 3+ hours while winning zero free points
That's a great point as well! I thought about including that, but there are some other small guys who have reached the top 3/4 (ferrer, davydenko, nishikori... more if you go farther back) who have mediocre serves, but find better ways to construct points, so I figured I'd stick to the groundstroke game. Yeah unless you're a beast in other areas like Rafa having a weak serve basically counts you out. Had Rafa had a good serve I honestly believe he'd have like 28-30 slams.

I feel that claim is further justified by the fact that he finally won Wimby in 2008 when he first improved his his serve and had his own self-proclaimed best season ever in 2010 largely due to serving bigger than ever. If he woulda had that caliber of serve in 04-07, he could have maybe stolen a hardcourt slam from Fed or Wimby in 07 in that era for sure.

22 Slams. Yes for an untrained tennis eye Nadal's playing style is the hardest to explain. How does he have that much success?
Lack of offensive weapons mean his ceiling is 6 to 10 on the ATP. De Minaur from the age of 5 to 13 lived in Spain so a little odd that he ended up with such lack of topspin on his forehand.

very interesting video, great comparation with Agut. Tennis is really strange sport, a lot of players with unique technique made and are making great results, but for my opinion, it is harder and harder to be, lets say top 5. great video, keep on editing

He won't reach the very top. This is a non-surprise here. He doesn't have enough firepower, even though has definitely improved in that category over the last few years. That's why he's top 10. But certainly, it's not enough to get him to the top 5 or greater. And you did a good job explaining why his firepower is less than other top players.

Ehh, yes but. The main problem with his game vs the greats is apparent in the comparison clips v Djoker. Alex doesn’t make the legs do all possible work in setting up for the ball. He’s often using a torso toss to reach the ball, and see that head moving around. Djokers bh you show has his weight directly over the feet, stepping in to the ball, no head movement, just a hip and torso rotation to strike. The Djoker motion looks simple, easy in the eye as they say. Federer even more so in the day.
Alex serve, same thing he’s tossing torso into the court, like he’s a mm away from falling flat in serve recovery. That off balance stuff will prevent him from serve and volley success on grass, some hard. His off balance ball strike are more apparent in net transition, which speed won’t overcome.

Very good breakdown I.m.o he’s done really well for what he’s working with he’s super consistent and just waits for his opponent to make a mistake, I’m happy for him but glad this style of tennis is not going to be rewarded at the elite level because this style of tennis is boring but effective..
Yeah, the consistency can be a bit dull, although in Alex's defense, it's really exciting to see some of the shots he pulls off on-the-run on defense. Thank you for watching!

He is very much in the mould of Hewitt, who managed to snag a few in a weak era (between peak Sampras/Agassi and the rise of Fed), but against Sinner, Alcaraz etc it'll be hard. He'd need to increase his power and hope for some luck to get maybe 2 grand slams. But hey he might play until he's 40, in which case that's a lot of time.
Hewitt very different strokes though. Massive take-back on the forehand, almost WTA-style.

In this day and age, it's hard for anyone at 6ft or less to be amongst the best of the best, especially over a prolonged period of time. Alcaraz is an exception to the rule, being a supreme athlete and a great hitter. But even Alcaraz has shown some vulnerability as of late. Lack of power on his serve means that he has to compensate in other aspects of his game, which is something that requires a lot of effort and makes him prone to injury. So just based on his size, De Minaur is at a disadvantage to begin with. So he has done exceptionally well to reach the level and ranking that he has. Having said that, he can improve technically and definitely this analysis is a fair assessment of what he can improve on. With an improvement in his technique, he could potentially achieve better results but his size will hinder him from being at the very top for a long time. Stats clearly show that the majority of the best players tend to be in the range of 6ft1-6ft4, which includes the likes of Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, Murray, Sampras, Becker, Edberg and more recent stars like Sinner and Tsitsipas.
Thanks for the thoughts! Alcaraz is definitely on the bottom end of the optimal range (I've heard someone say he's only 5'10" without shoes, but I'm not sure I believe that). His injuries are likely from the intensity of his game, I mean just look at Nadal's track record. However, Alex is 6'0", which is optimal IMO. I don't think anyone at 6'4" has won a slam at since the Sampras era. I'd argue that Alex could do with a bit more muscle mass and sacrifice some speed, but otherwise his physique is less of a limit on his game than his technique. Thanks for watching!

@@WhiffedOverhead ATP Cup 2020. Brisbane and Sydney (was the doubles). The country was awash with bushfires. Nick raised $6 million for bushfire relief by sheer force of personality, playing on Rod Laver Arena with Federer and smashing down 100 aces at $200 per ace that summer. No he can't play tennis. But he can do other stuff. We were at every doubles match in 2022 and do you know what the Australian media said? The Special K's are a disgrace to the country and an embarrassment to tennis. With that sort of support, is it any wonder he loses heart over the years?
DeMinaur is also a little front on when serving which holds him back too.

De Minaur is a top 10 player. He won't be in the top 4 but neither will most other players. Over the past 20 years tennis was dominated by 3 players. The rest of the players cycled through. No one expects him to be in the top 5 but he deserves top 10.

no way de minaur is 6 feet nadal is truly just over 6 feet (even though hes listed at 6 1) and he towers over de minaur; I think all the pros stretch their height a bit.
I think they're measured, so if one of them is listed taller, then all of them are listed taller.

I think you're spot on. But I feel your title is a little click-baity, considering that a player that always teases around the top 10 HAS "reached the top", further than .0001% of tennis players in the world can ever dream. The title could more accurately be "Why DeMinaur Won't Reach #1". But I also understand the psychology behind trying to put as much negativity into a title, as that will DEFINITELY get your rising channel more clicks. So keep on while your channel is on the rise (because I definitely want to see more videos from you), but maybe have your titles have a better reflection of what you're trying to get across once your videos are pulling in tons of views.
Reaching the top literally means reaching the highest point possible. Which in tennis means being #1.
Due to his bad technique his is not able to produce powerful strokes. That's what top players actually have, the so called "Punch". But I still believe he can do something. Remember David Ferrer also played if I am not mistaken two GS Finals.
Agreed! And I think the secret of how to get that “punch” is learnable for most people. I looked it up and Ferrer has one final appearance at Roland Garros, but 4 other semifinal appearances between the Australian and the US. Thanks for watching!

DeMinaur is the only tennis player in the world who's both overrated and underrated at the same time. It's just a pain to watch him. There's nothing you can learn from watching him like you can with Alcaraz, Sinner and Djokovic.

Nick's terrible posture seems to be one of the reasons he has the top five all time serves in the world. If you listen to Nick's recent podcasts which you probably won't you will realise that it's not that Nick doesn't want to work but that the constant injuries caused by initial overworking and overplaying (compare Alcaraz right now) have caused permanent damage to elbow, knee, shoulder, hip and neck. He can't play clay because of knee injuries. He can't play after October because of having to rest his body. Judging Nick by the tabloid press is ridiculous - you have probably never heard of clinical depression in elite athletes and don't believe in it anyway. Lucky you.

There are plenty of reasons to dislike Nick Kyrgios - he 100% has narcissistic personality disorder - his thin skin and inability to accept criticism is legendary. His rude comments about Donna Vekic in particular were vulgar and a COMPLETE breach of her privacy - she was a 19 year old sleeping with a 30+ married father of two (Wawrinka) and he just broadcast her sexual history (Kokkinakis banged your gf mate) to the world as a pathetically chauvinistic attempt to piss off Wawrinka. No apology ever given to her.
I happen to love watching Nick play - his serve is incredible, his BH is steady as a rock and criminally underrated. His FH is one of the weirdest shots I've ever seen but it works. His posture has always been shit and no his injuries don't help it but he didn't help himself out either.
Talking about Kyrgios is complex and he's talented AF but don't act like he is owed respect or is in any way a likeable person

Your knowledge of the technical aspects of tennis strokes is excellent and helpful. Don't mind your humour at all. But you lost me straight away when you made snide remarks about Nick Kyrgios and Kokkinakis. Went with the usual tabloid theory they are hopeless because they don't work hard enough. Look at their wikipedia entries. Kyrgios was like Alcaraz for years - overtraining, taking every ball, getting injured all the time - knee, shoulder, spine, hip, ankle, wrist, elbow - and over and over because he wasn't allowed to rest up properly because the media were screaming at him for 'tanking' or being lazy. So the injuries were compounded. Same with Kokk. Lazy blokes. Won't train. Refuse to make their injuries worse. Refuse to bang their bones about and tear their ligaments further. Just for you to yell at them further. Nick's knees have been bandaged for years. His elbows and shoulders are a mess. Please don't do an I hate Kyrgios analysis. You haven't got a clue.
So I actually have a lot of more nuanced opinions about Kyrgios than just the surface level jokes, which I'd like to do a video on someday. I also think Kokkinakis seems to have a great work ethic and is definitely not the same as Kyrgios and certainly not Tomic. The only thing I'll say is that the greatest players always sacrifice a lot of potential partying or other recreational stuff. While the media narratives are dull and overblown, Kyrgios himself has said he really likes to party at times when he should be resting or training. Watch the Jay shetty On Purpose podcast December 2021. The Pivot, Channing Crowder. Rich Eisen. Hotboxin with Mike Tyson. Piers Morgan...everybody wants to talk with him. Why? If you want to attack Nick Kyrgios for not winning a slam or a major, do it with a bit of perspective.

De Minaur is a pusher. Very stable, but no real weapons. So he has to outwork all of his opponents.
He's gotten stronger in the last year, but there's a limit. Muscle is weight, and if he suddenly added 5mph on his groundstrokes he'd also probably lose the ridiculous speed that's the only reason he ever cracked the top 20, let alone the top 10. And now I'm suddenly imagining Rune's legs on DeMinaur's body and giggling to myself.
