Love this for using up scraps! While I was watching I realized if did reverse order on the sewing… starting where you stopped… you could raise up the one petal, start underneath it a little and after following around, you’d end up at the bottom corner. Then you only have ends to trim at that one last spot. Thanks for sharing this! 💚
I started to watch your video,, stopped 1 minute in, and I dug out my orange peel template that I bought this summer at Missouri Star. I love the double petals. If I ever know I will meet you, I will bring a fresh orange, and demstrate why it is called an orange peel template. It's the best/easiest way to peel an orange. 😉 Thank you for this video.

This is gorgeous and so simple. Our guild in Canada had a sustainability speaker on Monday! This is perfect as it uses denim as a base, scraps and crumb blocks for the fabric, no fusible! And our guild is also starting to feature the Accuquilt cutter at our maker space at our library. Can’t wait for part 2!

Thanks! I would say - although I didn’t use fusible you probably should! I’ve had a couple stitches come loose after too many goes in the spin cycle of the washing machine 🤦🏼♀️

Thank you for the great video! I'm looking forward to seeing the QAYG part too. I'm doing a hand applique butterfly project. I knew I didn't want the feel of fusible and I wanted a slight raised effect. I used light woven non-fusible interfacing and the stitch and flip method to get turned edges. Then I basted the shapes with washable school glue about 3/8" in from the edge. That leaves a soft edge for the hand stitching and burying my thread tails. The glue basting will wash away.
Your project sounds fab and also sounds like you have way more patience than me 😂. I’ve never had the patience to do much in the way of hand sewing - it always looks gorgeous when other folk do it though!

I made a similar quilt recently. I did use fusible. I found that even with the fusible if I stitched too close to the edge it frayed and pulled out from the stitching after I washed it. Maybe my fusible wasn’t adhered well enough? I don’t know. At any rate it was very scrappy. I love how it turned out. Mine were singe orange peels. I love this look of the double peels on each block. Thank you for the ideas.
I’m sure your quilt is gorgeous. Not sure what happened with your fusible. I’m going to add a bit of extra quilting in the next video so 🤞🏻 my seams don’t pop!

I also love the crumb block petals! I have an orange peel quilt started in blues and white. Actually just got it out today and was looking at it. Packed it back away!! Your way looks much easier. Mine has interfacing on the back of each piece. 😢
There are so many ways to do orange peels. I did consider the interfacing way but it was just too many extra steps for the mood I was in! I’m sure yours is lovely and will be worth the extra effort. 💕

Could it have anything to do with how one peels an orange. I remember by grandmother (born 1900) always took a knife and scored the orange all the way along and then a second scoring right angles giving four orange peel segments. I do not know anyone today who peels an orange that way. An orange quarter will also give you the same shape of peel. Only an idea.
I’ve been cutting up blue jeans since watching your awesome video! Regarding the jeans that have more stretch to them - did you find it necessary to use a stabilizer on those? Or did you just use them as they are? Do you pay attention to the direction of the weave of the jeans? Thank you for sharing - you are sew creative❤❤❤
Hi! Most of the jeans I reuse have at least a bit of stretch and I don’t do anything different. Doing it a block at a time kind of stabilises it on its own if that makes sense? Also no - I don’t pay attention to weave. I am just not that detail oriented a quilter 😂
Yes people do quilt denim on a long arm and I have two but I’ve had issues with stretch and puckering with denim on a long arm. I like to do my denim quilts QAYG. There is a quilt construction video just out this Monday that shows how I put this one together and quilted it.
I have this die and love this variation. I also have a bunch of crumb blocks with tons of seams that would probably work well on a denim base. Question re quilting with denim: do you only use old style cotton denim or do you use the kind with spandex and some stretch as well? It seems like most of the denim I come across has some spandex in it and I was wondering how it sews up.
I use all kinds. If you quilt it down in blocks like this it works fine for me but many folk would add interfacing to the stretch kind to ward off any issues. I always suggest experimenting with what feels easier/less stressful for you. The answer tends to be different for different folk!

You don’t need the Accuquilt it just speeds up cutting the shapes that’s all. You can use a cheaper orange peel acrylic template to get the shapes.
