    They may not be your colors but they sure are mine, especially aquas. I have a huge collection of aqua/teal/blue green and tons of blues as well. I love how this quilt came out. As soon as Moonchild (aka the big block quilt) gets done (it is my found time project at the moment because I have 5 or 6 other quilts underway ahead of it, not counting the ones ready for quilting!) I will definitely do at least one of these though! It looks great and might make good donation quilts for teens because you can put them together quickly so you can do several. I am thinking I may use my Moonchild scraps for this. I started with a fat quarter bundle, so there is quite a bit left, and I can add other scraps in. Thanks for the great ideas and keeping it real!

    Hi Kristen, My husband and I were given a beautiful king size ivory Maltese coverlet. I want to use it on our bed. We do not use a top sheets when we make our bed, we just use a blanket as a top sheet. I thought about backing, or paying to have it backed, the coverlet so it won’t be scratchy to the skin. I have watched several videos and really liked yours the best, thank you! Because the fabric has the design or the stitching directly on it, how would you sew on a back? I don’t have “ditches” to stitch in. I don’t currently own a sewing machine, so I can buy one, or sew by hand, and I’ve only ever made one quilt with my stepmom when I was in high school. I’m concerned that stitching on a back would take away from the beautiful stitch work on the front. I loved your idea of going to a thrift store and buying a duvet cover to use as a backing. Do you have any suggestions about how to stitch on the backing without taking away from the beautiful stitch work on the front? I wish I could attach a picture of the coverlet to show you. Thank you, Marisa

    • @ScrapFabricLove
      @ScrapFabricLove Před 6 dny

      Okay here are my thoughts: 1) take one side of a duvet cover or a top sheet and sew it right sides together with the coverlet leaving a turning gap. Turn it right side out and stitch closed the opening. 2) to secure the now attached but floppy back you could ‘tack’ sew every hand width or so with monofilament thread (invisible thread) or white thread. Just a couple stitches in one place - similar to tying a quilt but without the little tails. Now I don’t know what the edge of the coverlet is like so maybe that would make this a no go somehow but the other option would be to still do the tack stitching but rather than sewing right sides together and turning right side out you could use quilt binding to bind it together wrong sides together as you would with a regular quilt- but minus the batting. If you were going to do this I would tack/tie the top together first and bind second. Hope that makes sense!

    • @MarisaDavid-x5r
      @MarisaDavid-x5r Před 6 dny

      ❤ I love your ideas, thank you! The quilt has scalloped edges. I understood all of it except the last sentence. What does it mean to tack/tie the top first and bind second?

    • @ScrapFabricLove
      @ScrapFabricLove Před 6 dny

      @MarisaDavid-x5r so I was saying that along with joining the backing at the edge (either way) you would need to do something so the back isn’t flopping around. One solution is to tack or tie it. If you look up how to tie a quilt you will see the general concept but as you don’t want to see it I suggested tacking instead which is like stitching 3 or 4 stitches in one place with the white or monofilament thread and then burying your knot instead of having ties that you can see. Hope that makes more sense! I just meant you would do that step first if you are going to use binding and second if you are going to do the attachment method without binding.

    Did you have lessons from the dealer on this machine? If you weren't aware of some of these things then it seems that you didn't have lessons. When changing to a different platform, lessons are useful even for experienced sewists. You say that you broke needles many times, attempting to sew wider stitches on a straight stitch plate. So you didn't learn that there would be no warning and didn't use the handwheel first. I couldn't listen to any more. OK the machine obviously didn't suit you but it sounds like you made a number of unwise decisions too.

      Dealer was not in my town so no didn’t have lessons. I get that I shouldn’t have bought this machine - well above my skill & patience level. We live & learn.

      @@ScrapFabricLove Was this your first 9mm machine? Some sewists are unaware there's a learning curve with them and not all dealers ensure that this is understood by the prospective buyer. My collection of machines includes a Brother 7mm and a Bernina 9mm machine and there's a difference in how they handle soft, drapy fabrics. One might reasonably think that 2mm is not a lot of difference, but it really is. I need to use a stabiliser in some situations with the 9mm, where I don't need it with the 7mm. Regardless of the price of the machine, there is no one machine that does everything perfectly. They all have their pros and cons. That's really frustrating when some of the features we want only come with the most expensive machines. Depending on what we like to sew, sometimes we might be better off with 2-3 different cheaper machines, that have their strengths in different areas, rather than expecting one high priced machine to meet all of our needs. The other issue that is becoming more prevalent these days is the increasing number of bells and whistles. Sometimes error messages seem nonsensical, like the thread out error when thread is still present. The key to troubleshooting is to understand what criteria is used by the machine to generate the message, and that will often lead to the real cause of the error. As manufacturers attempt to make machines more complex this issue is causing great angst for some sewists.

      @cruznk9 yes I had a Janome 4300 QDC before I bought this - so huge jump in machine 😂. The main thing was I was a relatively new sewer and I thought big name/higher price tag would = more intuitive/easy to use. I’ve learned my lesson 😂. I have a pfaff quilt expression and a Janome 1600 QC now (plus a long arm) and I am happy with my set up. That Bernina was just not for me. Totally understand and respect that lots of folk love them. Just doesn’t suit my sewing personality! Thanks for weighing in!

      @ScrapFabricLove I think it's a reasonable expectation to have that a high end machine will meet all of our needs and be super easy to use. Unfortunately it can be a trap, as you learned. I'm glad you've found a set up that suits you and I hope you learned something useful from your experience, besides avoiding the Berninas from now on.

    I just made a king size quilt using Monica Poole’s (Pattern Poole TV) cover strip method with strips on the back. She has 5 methods and all can be done without hand sewing. My machine has a built in walking foot so I can use a foot with a guide to do the top stitch for the cover strip.

      Awesome! Well done on your king size quilt! That’s quite the achievement!

    I hate stitch in the ditch. I stitch “by the ditch”. The distance from the ditch depends on the look I want for the quilt.

      Yeah I like stitching beside the ditch. Much easier to get consistent

      Hi! I used many of my one colour blocks in my double orange peel quilt czcams.com/video/aKFQIikWSiU/video.htmlsi=6B61zaA_DuRLP4r4. I still have some that I can use in a future project

    I just moved and I’m unpacking a lot of boxes. Some aren’t mine. My son said he doesn’t want his old jeans anymore and I’ve hit the mother load (pun intended?), I feel there are a few that can be donated and a few for crafting. It’s great to see how to deconstruct jeans. It still makes me nervous to cut up a perfect pair of jeans. Thank you for sharing. I want to make a cute little bag with pockets. Have a wonderful day! Your PNW (Washington) friend. 😊

      Have fun with them. Extra tip that I didn’t know when I made the video is you can unpick the back pockets (some folk use a razor!) to give you more usable fabric from the butt area 😂
