Single Coil VS Humbucker for Metal (Fender Strat)

- I'm back at Replay Guitar Exchange in Tampa again and I asked Riff with Cliff to pick a metal guitar for me to show you.
What did he do? He grabbed a Fender Stratocaster. Granted, I like Fender strats. But for metal?
We took it a step further and decided to compare two Fender Strat guitars, one with a single coil pickup and another with a humbucker.
In the video, I play a few different styles of metal. Classic metal with a hint of thrash, old-school death metal, and a faster, progressive 80s metal style. And I also compared the single coil vs humbucker for some shred guitar.
Sometimes it's just fun to try different things with guitar and tone. And who knows what this is going to sound like? You might be surprised.
Oh, and be sure to hang around for our 'Guitar and Tone Chat' at the end of the video. We share some cool features of these Fender Strats and go deeper into the tones you hear in the video.
Of course, leave me a comment and let me know which you liked best: the Fender Strat with a single coil pickup, or the one with the humbucker.
Keep it Metal,
Jason

Hell yeah. Both sound good.
Yeah dude they both played and sounded great!
I love replays I stop in there all the time when I go to Florida and spend a good couple hrs. In there haven't been out there in a couple years but it's an awesome guitar shop really can't say enough about this place people are great who work there hope to be going back this year. Get out of Michigan for a couple wks lol
It’s such a cool place and love everyone there! Definitely let me know when you’re down here!
Informative video and great playing. I'm more of a 70's and 80's
cover player Rock and Country.
My son on the other hand is MeTaL. I have an APll in Natural Pine with Rosewood SSS.
I see what you mean about the during soloing part. Thanks for video
Thank you for checking this out...yeah, these are nice guitars!
Of course! Goes without saying. Thanks for sharing.
Edited to add, that TM DR behind you is really rather fetching!!
Yeah, there are some cool amps sitting back there!
John Levasseur ex-Cryptopsy was playing on a Strat 🤘
🤘
Nice! It's Fender they are magical! I just picked up an American pro sss, and it is now my favorite guitar in my collection. I started out with schecter c1 classic and also have a c1 platinum with EMG 81/85. The Fender is way easier to play, and it sounds better. I can crank the amp with the Fender, and there is no annoying hum or other unwanted noise in the pickups at all. American made Fender Strats awesome!
Yeah I love the strats!
I just got a Fender Custom Shop Strat GT11. I wanted go full Mick Mars with the guitar. Found out the body was only routed for SSS. Then I did some experimenting and found the answer to using an SSS for metal. The answer is... A cranked JCM900 pushed by a Vemuram JanRay and boosted by a Vemuram Budi G. Pure metal magic with single coils. Layered with my Les Paul Custom into a Friedman BE DLX pushed by a Klon KTR and you get a super thick and full track that will make any metal head cream his pants.
Yeah the single coils are great!
Nice playing as always Jason. The subtle differences and CZcams compression were not really enough for my ears to really notice. I'd go with the humbucker based on looks as I think that would maybe entice/inspire me just a smidge more 🤘🤘
A tortoise shell pick guard on the right guitar looks awesome and I normally like roasted maple necks, but again depends on the guitar.
Overall though, I'd still happily play either.
Thank you, and yeah, it's difficult to hear the differences. I think a lot of it comes down to how the guitar feels when playing more so than the tone. And yeah the humbucker may definitely inspire us more!
if you like the metallic and twangy attack of the note strat could be good as is. if not i solved the problem with the tone pot attached to bridge pickup and for very high gain a noise reductor.
Thanks for the input! 🤘
Thank you for sharing. What type of noise gate should I use for the single coil?
I really don't think it matters. In my studio and for stage, I use the MXR Smartgate, but most any gate will do the trick
@@jasonstallworth Thanks Jason.
Nice man!
🙏🤘
When it comes to high gain sound, pickups don't matter much. You can even use an EQ with a boost function to make one pickup sound like another.
Tonewood? Seriously? That's the realm of acoustic guitars, not solid body electric. A blind A/B recording can dispel that in an instant.
We weren't relying on the other videos made by CZcamsrs on these topics (I can tell you which videos you got this from, and to some extent, it makes sense but...). Though there's not a tremendous night/day difference, there are subtle differences that can be heard and felt. And it's all of those little nuances that can add up and inspire your sound.
That's highly debatable.
@@MrBikboi Most things in life (and sound) are debatable. This is why it’s important to go by your own experience, not what you got from someone else’s CZcams channel or their opinion.
If you noticed, the goal of this video (unlike many) wasn’t to try to convince anyone of anything.
@@jasonstallworth I meant to reply to the OP not you, cheers though.
@@MrBikboi 🙏🏻🤘
Morgan from Marduk used a Fender with humbuckers back in the day!
They're great guitars and the sound really cuts through
If you have the bridge wired to a tone pot, rolling it off a fraction really makes a strat single coil bridge thicken up.
🤘
Strats are versatile good for playing any genre although I usually use my BCRich for playing metal.
Love the BC Rich guitars…had a cool looking Warlock back in the 90s
They are 2 different animals so EQ, drive and effects should be adjusted accordingly based on genre , in the end you can make either come close to what you need.
🤘
Jason could play metal on a banjo he's that good!
🤘
I barely heard a difference between the 2 for some reason while when I coil split the brige pickup on my guitars I can hear a clear difference, so idk what happened there
Yeah there’s not a tremendous difference. Just some slight variations and I think you feel those in the playing more than hear them
@@jasonstallworth I guess so, but usually the difference is more obvious
@@jasonstallworth I can explain this phenomenon. "In the room" you will hear different than what is recorded by a microphone. Also, when there is a somewhat substantial amount of gain, the differences between pickup types is even harder to hear. The first Zeppelin album was recorded with a dual single coil Telecaster. Most people think it was a Les Paul. We listen and buy with our eyes all to often.
i almost got the Black Sabbath sound w my strat single pickup in position 4 between bridge and middle what i couldnt get w me ibanez humbucker 🤪
🤘
He has too many guitars said no one ever🎉🎉🎉
🤘
@@jasonstallworth peace bother
You know to my ears, both guitars sound pretty much the same. I don’t know why but even with a humbucker in the bridge Fender Strats still sound like Strats. Charvels and guitars like that with ‘buckers actually sound different to me. I’ve decided that when I play an actual Strat I prefer the traditional three single coils.
Yeah there's not a tremendous difference, especially listening on CZcams and how this was all recorded with just an iPhone. But there's a slight difference in the feel when you're playing.
You can’t get sound from any guitar material on a solid body guitar with magnetic pickups. Google some fundamental acoustics and physics you will see how these conceptions make no sense.
I think that’s a debate that will never end (which I personally could care less).
My interpretation and experience is that the type of guitar (and all factors from wood to pickups to neck thickness to fretboard width) can have an impact on how you play.
So maybe it’s not so much the actual tone but the slightly different style (which equates to sound) of what comes out. Hopefully that makes sense
Material of body have zero impact on sound. Electric guitar is not acoustic guitar.
www.purdue.edu/science/science-express/labs/labs/Physics%20of%20the%20Guitar.pdf
To the point is not acoustic, that metal strings even do not produce sound ( they are used to generate currency ). Vibration quality ( so sustain of electricity generation ) is imposrtant. But as long as guitar can handle strings ( force ) and will not breake... you can use even cardboard ( if you have such a strong carboard ).
The humbucker had plastic on it though. Should have taken that off
That’s the nuance of a brand new guitar but yeah, should’ve removed it
