It's been 30 years and I still can't hear "toe pick" without thinking of this movie! đ€Łđ
Anytime I would do or say something dumb my high school GF would say âDoug can readâ. Lol
In my family when someone has an accident someone else will say "toe pick." We were all big fans of this movie.
It used to bother me as a kid, but now I kind of love that we don't actually see them get the gold (though from the judge reactions we can assume they did). Cos that's not the point. Kate has been driven all her life by the need for the medal. And it's made her deeply sad and isolated. But in the end it's Doug's love for her that's the most important thing. He tells her "you didn't have to do that" because his love for her isn't dependent on her skating, and it's the first time in her life she's had that. Had unconditional love. And she skates with all the love in her heart back. I love it.
Yep, itâs a lot like Rocky, in that what they won was completely beside the point.
Makes me cry Everytime.đ„
I agree. When she just skates out of love and fun and essentially no longer cares about the winning, neither does the film. Which is why we don't see it. Showing a result either way is irrelevant.
In Cutting Edge 2...
The first scene is of a gold medal in that clear plastic box.
@@tastyneck that's a brilliant comment. It's one of the reasons the comment section is a must for all videos -- you get to see how other minds interpret or grasp stories. Btw, they both KILLED their roles in this movie; the chemistry was palpable.
I used to work in a restaurant where D.B. Sweeney would come in. Very down to earth guy. And he still gets plagued with people telling him "Toe-pick!"
amazing
Wow! I can't believe you came across 'The Cutting Edge'... I liked it a lot. I even got a chance to talk to the Director Paul Michael Glasser about it. He told me they cast Moira Kelly because when she came in to the audition she was fighting with her brother and they liked her tenacity. He also said that through most of the movie she had a broken leg and they had to shoot around her wearing a cast then mentioned the scene where she was crawling around on the floor looking for her earring. One scene he wanted in the movie but couldn't get in due to budgetary constraints was he wanted a scene with Doug (D.B. Sweeney) playing pond hockey at night with a bunch of cars with their headlights on lighting the ice... it would've been cool and would've shown Doug's love for the game and inability to "let go" of his dream but the studio couldn't find the money for the scene. It's a nice love story so I'm sure you're going to enjoy it.
Starsky directed this? Did not know that. Good choice though - she fit the role perfectly and it was instant crush time first time watching back then.
@@MoMoMyPup10 He also directed "The Running Man", "The Air Up There", "Band Of The Hand" and some "Miami Vice" episodes.
That would have been a great scene!
According to IMDB, the two stars spent over two months figure skate training together and became very close friends and remain so to this day.
"Toe Pick!"
Came looking for THIS comment. đ
LOLâŠyup !
I just saw this on my feed and I came into the comments to type that. I was watching hockey the other day and I said toe pick!
"Toe Pick" and "Auto-Wash" from The Fifth Element are two random phrases that I still use to this day when something goes wrong for someone, lol!
I think this is what started my love of the Enemies to Lovers trope. I don't care if it's corny, it is delightful, and I can watch it again and again and not get sick of it!
This movie is SO cheesy! I love it so much! People love it because their chemistry is FIRE đ„Thatâs why I love it. đđ
Quick shout out to the PIB editor. He does a great job of including all the major story beats in his edits. So even if Iâve never seen the film before (like in this case), I can follow the whole story perfectly. I probably wouldnât seek out âThe Cutting Edgeâ under normal circumstances, but seeing this short version of it was a lot of fun! And even with the movies I love, sometimes itâs nice to watch the 30-minute versions of them. So thank you, PIB editor! Great job!
The editing is a big part of why this is my favorite channel.
my thoughts exactly!!!đđ»đ„đđ»
It helps that she reacts to the major story beats. Itâs one of the things I love about this channel, most movies she watches here work on her exactly how intended so those beats all land.
I keep meaning to mention this. Cassie's editor always does an incredible job and it makes such a difference in a reaction. Kudos to the editor! đ
I've noted this before. Even with epics like Ben Hur, Cassie somehow manages to capture the key moments.
Cutting Edge! Sighhh...Such wistful memories associated with this one. "Toe pick" (of course) but "Don't quit your day job" & "Finger painting?" are pretty iconic, too. Not to mention the ridiculous, but unforgettable Pamchenko twist!
The "finger painting" and "Yes, Doug can read" lines crack me up every time I watch this movie.
@@DavidRox71 DB's dry humor. His delivery is everything đ
The jump cut to âit wasnât like his nose was perfectâ stands out too
Not the The tequila sheâs done for lol
What do you do? Soak them in battery acid?
As a man this movie hit a chord I never knew existed before. I love how they both have issues and how both characters need each other to rise as a couple. I also thought the ending was rough without knowing the result, but the result of the competition isn't what actually mattered.
Me too brother
Moira Kelly's character wasn't just lashing out at D.B. Sweeny, she was lashing out at her entire existence. The reason she was having trouble finding a partner is she didn't trust anyone. She didn't relate to any of her partners because she didn't want to be doing that. She was doing what her dad wanted her to do. In the end when she heard DB Sweeney tell her he loved her, it brought her world together. The Gap that was just frustrating her and making her angry was gone. She wasn't mad at DB Sweeny she was mad at skating. It had dominated her entire life. And she didn't even want to be a skater she just wanted to be loved by her dad. She found that love and it scared her to death in DB Sweeney. Would have loved to have been there with you to watch this one. Moira Kelly actually broke her ankle making this movie. In the drunk scene you notice you don't see her below the waist that's because she had a cast and all kinds of stuff going on for the broken ankle. Both actors learned how to skate now they probably had stunt doubles for some of the skating but the reality is they both can skate now. I'm willing to bet that during the course of making this movie they became quite good friends. You could see it in the way they look at each other. Genuine warmth and love. I don't mean intimate love. I think that's part of why I like the movie so much.
If you check out the extras on the Blu-Ray, they both became great friends during filming. D.B. Sweeney said that she loved working with Moira Kelly.
He can dish it back as much as she can dish it out. Perfect match.
Im surprised you even found this movie but i knew you would like it. the hints of love are there through out the movie. the director left it more to the eyes and body language. this is my favorite chic flic.
As a guy who doesnât like âchick flicksâ I will admit this one has choked me up before (when they profess their love).
It's literally one of the best 'I love you' scenes in the history of the medium. As a guy I say it's only rivalled by Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Kate's expression is just... wow. I mean it's not a chick flick as far as I'm concerned because it doesn't pander to cheap emotional thrills or manipulate the viewer (which is what the genre usually does). Aka the vomit worthy cringe stuff which usually makes me sick.
It just 'breathes'. It's a hidden gem in any case.
Toe Pick!!! I'm over the moon and back that somebody FINALLY reacted to this. Always been a guilty pleasure favourite. "Baby Now I" - plus lick it, slam it, suck it - I can rewatch repeatedly - laugh myself silly - and automatically be in a better mood. Thank you for finding this little GEM.
Pamchenko is played by the late Roy Dotrice, a truly awesome character actor. He played âFatherâ in the TV series Beauty and the Beast, and Wolfgang Mozartâs father Leopold in AmadeusâŠand about 100 other roles as well. Heâs also known for doing the narration for the audiobook versions of the first five books in George RR Martinâs Song of Ice and Fire series.
His daughter Karen was Jane Banks in the original Mary Poppins.
When this movie came out, people were calling it the ultimate love/skate relationship.
The toe pick scenes crack me up everytime. đ
"I love couples figure skating!" Welp... you heard her ladies and gents. Now she needs to watch Blades of Glory, the gold standard of couples figure skating movies!
Does the movie 'slap shot,' count as figure skating?
@@hiuto2 Yes, that and Miracle
Slapshot is very underrated.
More of a classic than you know. It is a retelling of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew." Her name is even Kate.
Yeah, there is some of that.
There's not really the 2nd couple, tho (Bianca and Lucentio, sez google... had to look it up, it's been decades)... unless that's the other figure skating team. But the dude's more interested in D.B. Sweeney than his own partner, so... hm. ;D
I loved this movie. I especially loved that she WAS so mean at the beginning because it made you realize she was sabotaging herself because she wanted her father's love. In the end it didn't matter if they got the gold. What mattered is that she got a partner, and she got her father's love. I wasn't crazy about her father's performance though. The scene where she confronts her dad about her just being accepted as his daughter should have been more emotional IMO.
You legit reacted to The Cutting Edge!?! đ€Ł Hahaha. Classic. Anyone who grew up in this era has seen this movie.
Highly underrated flick. As far as Rom Coms go i really enjoyed this.
"Holy crap... They're going to get seriously injured!"
While the "Pamchenko twist" is not even physically possible... The move they are attempting (a "bounce spin", also known as a "headbanger") at 24:00 is so dangerous, it is banned from competitions like the Olympics. It is still performed in exhibitions however, because it is a huge crowd pleaser due to the danger.
My grandma LOVED this movie. I haven't seen it since I was a kid and she was still alive. Great to see this one come up and hope you enjoy.
This is one of my 3 favorite romantic comedies. I used to shock folks at college with this VHS as a 300lb football player who openly loved this movie and watched it often. Glad to see a reaction to it!
Gotta ask what are the other two?
@@anneb889inquiring minds still would like to know, yeah!
same. my favorite is "when harry met sally" then "notting hill" this is #3 for me
omg.......the best part of this reaction is when she tried to blink one eye and she kept closing both eyes. LOL
I got so excited when saw you were watching this movie. This is one of my all time fav movies, dosent hurt that I live in Calgary. Cool runnings is another great Calgary Olympic movie set during the '88 games and based on a true story.
Here's a fun fact. Moira Kelly is the voice of adult Nala in the Lion king
This movie has a special place in my heart. I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. LIKE!
Scott Hamilton was my favorite growing up. His skill & humor made his routines the best!
And back flips!
The two main actors Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney Are Still very good friends to this day..the Chemistry was definitely real.. i Love this film
Damn! I have to wait two hours for this? Such an underrated gem. And, of course, the iconic 'Toe Pick!'.
If you're into figure skating, then you might like the movie Ice Castles with Lynn Holly Johnson and Robby Benson. It's from 1978, so it's an older movie.
This might actually be a remake of Ice Castles.
Ice castles was so good
And that songâŠ,,,,đ
I was going to recommend that too - but definitely the original (I just recently found out they did an Ice Castles remake).
That one is a 3 hanky movie
This movie is a favorite of my big sister, and I grew up watching this all the time. đ
Fun trivia: Moira Kelly was cast to play the role of Geena Davis' sister Kit in "A League of Their Own", however an injury she sustained in this film prevented her from taking the role. Lori Petty was cast instead. TOE PICK! lol Thanks, Cassie for a wonderful reaction. I had fun watching this with you. I'm glad this movie cheered you up a little bit from your bad mood. I'm watching the winter olympics on tv. Hope you feel better and take care of yourself!!đ€đżđžâ€
Funny, I couldn't imagine anyone else as Kit now. Lori Petty slayed in that role.
The cutting edge is such a great movie I love this film so much
Figure Staking /Ice dancing is damn compelling in the Olympics, incredibly iconic. Torvill and Dean dancing to Bolero in Sarajevo, Sarah Hughes, Battle of the Brians, etc etc. Good choice.
Oh yes, I was watching Brian Boitano in the â80âs!
@@lewstone5430 and by the late 90s we were all asking ourselves "What would Brian Boitano do?"
Referencing a 23-year old movie just shows that I make only the most timely jokes..
In all seriousness, he was one heck of a skater.
This is one of those movies that when it comes on, no matter where its at I stop what I am doing and watch. I have to say the last few reactions have been on point. Awesome job :)
I remember watching this movie multiple times when it hit the dollar theater...just a really feel-good story. Too bad they had to use lots of editing to hide the fact that neither of them were competition level skaters. Makes you wish they had deep fake technology back then.
To me, the classic skating love story was Ice Castles (1978)...a story about an Olympic hopeful who is partially blinded by an accident and goes on to compete despite her disability. Lynn-Holly Johnson, a professional skater and silver medalist in the 1974 Figure Skating Championships, played the role of Lexi and did a very nice acting job opposite Robbie Benson. It was a surprisingly good movie.
Thanks cassie, i haven't seen this movie in years, but i remember my sister and i watched it a lot as kids , ( ice skating phase)
One of my all time favorites, became a big Moira Kelly fan ! đ„°
This is the first movie that Cassie has watched that I've never heard of for once.
When I tell you that I literally gasped with happiness when I saw this, I'm not exaggerating even a little bit, lol. This is one of my favorite movies. I just love figure skating (and as you pointed out, hockey too, lol!) so when I first saw this movie when I was younger it was just the best thing ever to me. "Toe pick." always makes me laugh along with that moment where they run into her old partner and Doug realizes that the old partner is gay. The look on his face and the way she smirks at him is such a fun moment.
"I always wanted all the figure skating couples I watched to be in love. To kiss after." That made me think of Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov honestly. They're my favorite figure skating pair to this day. You could just see how in love they were when they skated. I still remember how shocking it was when he suddenly passed away and then what it was like to watch her step on the ice for the first time as a single skater about a year or so later.
Thanks for reacting to this one as well - I think you're the only person I've ever seen react to this movie!
My father had specific genres that he enjoyed. War. Westerns. Etc. Well, this was one of his out of the box movies. He loved this one. And... Can't Buy Me Love is one of my all-time favorites. I was a Patrick Dempsey fan long before McDreamy existed. lol I can't wait to see that one!!
I love this film so much. I'm not a rom-com guy and really enjoyed this as just a fun film. And to me it's less romantic and more two people becoming the people they were meant to be...together. And they just happen to fall in love, which is also nice.
Everybody loves this movie. It's not great, it's predictable and corny, but it hits a certain spot.
I agree. In the community post I mentioned that I love this film and part of that was because of my crush on Moira Kelly. But mostly there's just....something...about this film that I just can't explain. Your description is on point. It just hits a certain spot.
@@tastyneck Miss Kelly certainly had a booty that ~refused~ to quit... not to mention she had that 'mean pretty' thing down pat.
The leading Lady and Leading man build up an emotional/romantic chemistry that is hard not to get caught up in even if you see it as "predictable" and "corny".
Nope. Only speak for yourself.
They make a good couple. The characters are really relatable. It's a feel good movie.
Best line: "If it was 40 below, and that button meant the difference between a long happy life, and a slow agonizing death of hypothermia, I still wouldn't give you the satisfaction."
"Bet you look good from a few thousand miles away."
Ahhh another movie from my childhood. My sister was absolutely obsessed with this movie so it was always on. The story was good, it was a bit cheesy, but still a solid movie. The only complaint I have was that they didn't show as much of the actual ice skating, but I understand why they couldn't hence all of the quick cuts/motion blur stuff.
I'm so happy right now! I've been waiting for someone to react to this for so long!
"Mystery Alaska" is another fun character/hockey/comedy movie with a great cast of great actors.
Oh my God! Thank you for reacting to this. Went on a date to see this when it came out. Her choice and I was pissed initially. But I walked out of the theater with a smile on my face. Cheesy, predictable, and perfect.
Kurt Browning! I really miss him, such an incredible performer. :) Thanks for reacting to this one!
My mother loved this movie back in the day.
This was one of my favorites growing up! Thanks for bringing back those memories. Another sweet movie you might like is That Night!
I saw this movie in theaters when it came out! My sister and I also were ice skaters. It's a low budget movie, but it's also a fun movie.
I remember watching this on cable when I was home sick from school. I was supposed to have been reading "Great Expectations" instead of watching tv - in fact, the book was open on the coffee table - and when she gave it to him as a gift I just about jumped out of my skin. But I couldn't stop watching - I had too much of a crush on her by then.
You need to let your sister watch this movie. It's one of the most underrated movies of all time.
One of my favorite "romcom's" from the early 90's! I'm a little shocked that you actually reacted to this one since it is relatively obscure these days. Fun reaction! Thank you for sharing!
I wonder if we'll see a reaction to Strictly Ballroom in the near future
Hi Cassie, I wanted to let you know, I really love your reaction videos. You remind me of myself when you watch movies, it makes it so fun and relatable. Also, I so appreciate your efforts to keep your comments clean. As a Christian woman, It means a lot to me that I've now found a great channel to watch and enjoy. :) Also I found you yesterday and so I am going back to your old videos, but tried to find the newest in hopes you would see my comment. Really look forward to watching more! :) Have a blessed day!
It was implied that they won gold in the end. It was stated earlier in the film that whichever pair executed the Pamchenko perfectly, they would automatically win. And they did, so...
Great movie even a man like me loves this movie.
Love you Girl! Glad you liked this movie! Definitely great for Valentineâs Day. I like how the coach says âDonât go halfway. Halfway is bullshit. You go halfway you get hurt.â That phrase is perfect for everyday life. It always gives me chills when they did that lift at the end of the movie. They finally trusted each other and stopped fighting. She gave up control and had faith knowing he wouldnât drop her. Many figure skaters have told me this lift is suicide. Few have attempted it. Itâs like insane lifts in dancing but falling on hardwood and falling on ice are 2 totally different feelings.
Canât wait to see more of your reactions.
The Russian coach is my favorite character. Douglas was good for Kate because being around him have her a sense of being normal. She was so used to being around wealth. Kate did grow on me though. đđ
LOVE this movie! So glad this made it on the line up. This is one of those movies that was a big part off my childhood. "Toooeepiiiick" SO good! Haha
This is one of the most underrated cute movies ever. My mom used to have us kids watch it from time to time and my sisters just fell in love with it and I, the little brother actually thought it was a lot of fun too. Now my little girls watch it and they're absolutely fascinated. The nice thing is they're young enough that the adult stuff just goes right over their head. Nice job
To this day I still go around chirping TOE PICK! whenever someone screws up after I told them not to do something.
I've always liked DB Sweeney. He was Dish Boggett in Lonesome Dove, PLUS he was in Memphis Belle.
Also Shoeless Joe Jackson in Eight Men Out.
My number DB Sweeney movie is Fire in the Sky because eye trauma đ«
I havenât seen this movie in years! I really loved it when I saw it. đ„°
I wish you and your sister were watching this movie. You guys should do a lot more movies togetherđ
Seconded
One of the big challenges is their distance from each other.
Was such a good movie. âToe pick!â
Never thought I would see someone reacting to this movie đđ» great job
Thank you for watching and reacting to one of my favorite movies! The sequel to this (even though they change actors) is really good too. The rest are crap.
Omg this was a family favorite growing up. âșïž Underrated! So happy to see it here. đ
I never saw a chick flick before subscribing to your channel back when you first did The Green Mile but now I watch everything you post just because it's so much fun to see your reviews and so heartwarming to see you being happy at the smallest things which is really nice and such a change from the present situation in the world so thank you very much
One of My fave movies I think I wore off a vhs copy of this!! The pamchenko was dope!!!
Commenting before I even watch because I freaking love this movie and I'm so excited you are watching it!!!! Me and my family still randomly say "toe pick" to each other lol! Moira Kelly (Kate) also played in an amazing 90s movie you have to watch called With Honors (it also has Brendan Frasier and Joe Pesci) and D.B. Sweeney (Doug) was in Fire In The Sky which is another great one to check out! Another great ice skating movie to check out is Ice Castles (the original 70s or 80s one lol I forget when it came out).
Moira Kelly was a big crush of mine. She's terrific in this.
Sames. My main actress crush, thanks to this movie, during my HS years in the early 90s.
One of my top five favorite movies!
I work at a College and met a member of the figure skating team recently. She had never heard of the movie before and thought 'Ice Princess' was the pinnacle of figure skating movies. I informed her she hadn't seen the greatest figure skating movie if she hadn't seen 'The Cutting Edge'.
She came into my job yesterday and told me she watched it, based on my recommendation. She also wanted to see them win the Gold, but she understood ending the movie there. It didn't matter if they won or not, as they both managed to find their own redemption and much more.
She seemed angry at everyone for no apparent reason. Possibly because her mother was no longer with her, that can be really hard for a girl. Her father seemed to focused on her skating, some dads are not good at showing affection to their daughters, maybe afraid it will seem "too friendly"?
But when the "hockey player" came along at first she looked down on him thinking he was not up to the task. But, it turned out he was the first skater to challenge her. She soon found she was having trouble keeping up with him.
I was surprised you didn't mention the beautiful sweaters Moira wore in that movie. There were several that looked so luxurious. My daughter mentioned it several times during that movie. They appeared to be upscale cashmere, the really good kind with two or three layers. Probably cost $400-$600 apiece.
Thanks for the review, I enjoyed it almost as much as the movie.
Yes! Yes! Yes! One of my all time FAVORITES. Cassie you're going to love this Movie so muchđâïž
After this movie came out, The following summer, DB was at his family summer home out on Long Island, NY for the July 4th weekend and we all were getting ready for the Softball game at the ball field. He borrowed one of my shorts for the game.
I go fishing with his brother out on Montauk every so often.
Oh gee, OMG lol, this is my top guilty pleasure movie and absolutely nobody in my home country knows it. Thank you so much for this evening surprise! Love đ
This movie is awesome. I watched it when i was a small child many times. It has something for everyone in it. I'm normally a big sci-fi/ horror buff, but this film is just a lot of fun.
This movie is a guilty pleasure of ours. My husband has watched this with me soo many times over the yrs⊠Iâm a bit of a clumsy gal and when I do trip on nothing, he will sometimes say âToe pickâđ
"Honey where I come from we stand for the National Anthem." Your reaction to that was priceless! lol
Loved this movie as a kid, havenât seen it in probably 15-20 years. Great pick!
I loved this movie, I watched it multiple times when it first came out on dvd. Same with can't buy me love!!!
Omg I loved this movie, thank you for reacting to it! đż
Oh Cassie you bring the biggest smiles to my face!!! I really wish Carly was here for this one, her smile is so infectious, you guys would've been hysterical! I love how you've turned grand gesture into a verb!!!!!!! "HE NEEDS TO GRAND GESTURE HER!!!" LMAO đđđđđđ
âZamboni: do you guys even know what that is?â lol
Yes. In the US, the word Zamboni is used to make Canada jokes. Haha
LOVED LOVED LOVED your reaction! Since you seem to love ice skating so much, you should watch an early 80âs movie called âIce Castlesâ. Itâs one of my favorite movies! â€ïžfromOregonđșđž
I'm a 54 year old guy and my biggest secret is that this is my favorite movie...EVER!!!!! Still Love Moria Kelly
Thatâs awesome! Lol
Right at the beginning I saw the name Robin Cousins flash by. He was the 1980 Olympic Silver Medalist, and he had fantastic choreography and style. If there is any CZcams footage of him skating, it's definitely worth watching.
Actually Robin Cousins won the Olympic Gold medal in 1980.
I honestly cannot remember why I went to see this movie in a theater. But I did. I remember it wasn't what I had gone in expecting, but I walked away in love with this movie.
I remember seeing this not too long after it came out and thinking it was cute. I probably watched it because of D.B. Sweeney. I always liked him. You should react to âArsenic and Old Laceâ or âBringing Up Babyâ for one of your classic films. Learn who Cary Grant is. You wonât be disappointed.
I don't know if it's been mentioned, but the reason Brian dropped Kate in Calgary was because she raked him down the back with her toe pick during the lift. My guess is, she wanted to quit, but was afraid of disappointing her father. So, she chose to create a situation where no one would want to work with her, thus ending her career.
Kate's fire is part of what makes her so attractive and makes it satisfying that her relationship with Doug breaks through that.
This is the first movie you're watching that I've never heard of.
