“I’m in the dark here” gets me in the feels every time
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, really came out of no where for me when I was younger. Easily one of his best performances.
No wondering he won an Oscar for it.

I still cant believe it took 20 years after his first nomination for The Godfather in 1973 for Pacino to win his one and only Oscar for this in 1993
Actors etc win and lose for a variety of reasons. I feel like oftentimes, people treat award snubs like there's a group of people sitting in a smoke-filled room twiddling thumbs over who is and isn't going to win

Like Paul Newman with Color of Money,this is unfairly regarded as a career Oscar after a skew of earlier films he should've got the Oscar for instead🎩
Pacino made Godfather 1, Godfather 2, Dog Day Afternoon, and Serpico in the first 5 years of his feature film career..... still took him over 20 years to win an Oscar somehow. It's ridiculous. When Leo was shitting his diapers Pacino had already made a career of getting shafted at the Oscars lol I think he went like 0 for 7 before winning or something absurd like that.
Pacino is simply amazing here. He won the Oscar and it's well deserved. As for the character he plays you just can't help liking him once you get to know him. He's abrasive to say the least but he's honest. He doesn't sugarcoat anything. He is what he is and that's refreshing in many aspects.

Never a bad Al Pacino movie! His acting is so on target, and in this one he was the perfect ingredient to a blind veteran whose own life was affected as much as Charlie, for the better. Great movie all around. Very emotional.
I was born with poor sight in both eyes and this movie was an inspirarion for me to not give up when I still thought I might go blind. After 30 years I met a great surgeon who fixed me. Now Im living my dreams at last. Dont give in because you never know when some miracle might happen. My sight is nearly 20/20 now, I own a car and have flown 2 planes.

This is just an all-time great, legendary performance by Pacino, and a really great movie that had a huge impact on me when I first saw it. Super glad to see people reacting to this underappreciated classic.
That is my favorite Al Pacino movie. And he won a very deserved (and oddly only) Oscar for his performance in it. My second favorite, featuring a performance that rivals this one, is DONNIE BRASCO, which is also my favorite Johnny Depp movie. It too is not a romcom. You might want to consider it if you haven't already seen it.

I remember seeing this movie for the 1st time also having no idea what to expect. After seeing it I made my friends watch it. One of my favorite movies of all time. The speech is an all time classic. Hooo waaaa!
Pachino’s character was pretty far from being himself. The character in this movie was so unique and distinctive that it literally became how everyone typecasts him. Especially with the US Army Hooah acknowledgement of someone speaking the truth. It’s like how every Brando impression turns into Vito Corleone. But it’s so easy to forget how many totally unique and different distinctive characters he plays in movies.

Are you kidding? He's basically playing the same character here as he was in Scarface, Dog Day, Heat, Devil's Advocate, Glengarry Glen Ross, Dick Tracy, & Any Given Sunday.
For roles where he's more subtle & tones down the hoo-ah yelling, see: The Godfather 1&2, Serpico, Insomnia, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Carlito's Way, & Donnie Brasco. And even in those, he goes over the top a little bit. I haven't seen The Irishman, but I imagine there's plenty of hoo-ahing in that too.

Might I suggest a more subtle review of those characters, because if you couldn't tell the HUGE differences I would strongly considering upping the dosage of whatever narcotic you happen to be on.🙄🤦
The thing about Frank telling Charlie that "cover is better" goes along everything he says about Charlie during his passionate speech in the end. Every time Charlie talks about his situation at school, Frank tells him to cover himself, look out for his own interest, do what's best for him and screw those other guys because that's what they're gonna do to him anyway. Yet, when he's clearly about to lose everything he's been working so hard for and for the stupidest reason, Charlie sticks to his principles and refuses to sell out anyone even if he doesn't like them. And that's when Frank speaks up. When he realises Charlie has made a clear choice and is willing to face the consequences no matter what, Frank steps up for him and makes sure to highlight Charlie's integrity in the process. Because he understands and respects the fact that Charlie was given every chances to walk away from those consequences and he's not. Whether he's right or not is irrelevant. Charlie has proven to Frank that no matter what he chooses to do in life, he will follow through to the end and is unlikely to ever be corrupted. After all, as clumsy as his attempt was, Charlie did talk a very stubborn Frank off the ledge even though Frank gave him pleanty of reasons not to be there.
One of my favorite movies ever. Such a good character study.
One darker bit you may have missed in his "some people live a lifetime in a minute" clip is that he's an Army Ranger and especially during Normandy Army Rangers did a lot and had short life expectancies.

One of my FAVORITE MOVIES!!! I saw a documentary about Al Pacino once. He did a lot of really cool stuff even before "The Godfather"...just loaded with talent!
Great reaction! This is on my list of favorites. I did notice in other comments that someone mentioned the fact that this was Pacino's first Oscar win. But what the commenter did not mention was the fact that Al Pacino DID NOT want to do this movie. He wasn't in love with the script, but his agent kept pushing him until he finally decided to do it. I love Pacino; and I love this movie.
This is the type of movie that I think of when I hear "classic movies". Timeless.

One of my favorite all time films. It will make you laugh, cry and cheer. First film I saw Chris ODonal in, as well as Philip Seymour Hoffman, and the amazing Al Pacino. Watched this so many times over the years.

Ah, a Thanksgiving classic! Watched it with my stepbrother on his last Thanksgiving. Now I watch it every year (or watch someone else watch it for the first time) at this time to remember him. Glad it was your channel!
The Colonel's speech on behalf of Charlie at the assembly was so moving and powerful. It still makes my eyes burn and I always smile through tears when I see it.
It’s his old self that fought bad guys in politics in the army. He eats people like the principal for afternoon tea and thanks to Charlie’s help he stopped being suicidal and got his warrior self back.

This is such a great movie. Al Pacino did a great job as a blind man. The way he held his focus and not moving his eyes to look at who was talking to him. It’s funny how they ended up saving each others life. Charlie saved the Frank’s life and Frank saved Charlie’s by helping him stay in school and show them they can’t push Charlie around. 14:37 some of the fancier restaurants that require jackets and/or ties have some on standby for those that don’t have them.
I must say, those restaurants must make SUCH a great impression on the customers who have the money but did not fully understand the dress code. ❤

This film is the American remake of the 1974 Italian film "Profumo di Donna" by Dino Risi and starring Vittorio Gassman, based on the 1969 novel "Il Buio e Il Miele" by Giovanni Arpino.
This is by far THE BEST speech in movie history. I have seen A LOT of movies and Nothing comes close to Colonel Slade's speech at the end of this movie. I have almost gotten it memorized from how many times I have seen this movie! Al Pacino Absolutely earned his Best Actor Oscar for this movie. On a side note it was so much fun to see an adult "Donna" in USA Network's BURN NOTICE as a former IRA assassin ^_^!
Chris O’Donnell is great in this. The first movie that i saw him in was Fried Green Tomatoes starring Kathy Bates. It is one of my favorites.

Apparently Al Pacino needed therapy after this film to help him relearn to look straight. Colin Firth had to relearn to speak after The Kings Speech.
This was an excellent reaction to a great movie. Well done! You two picked up on a few subtleties I missed from seeing the movie probably 5-6 times in my lifetime, like that line from him getting out of the car driving for the last time, and knowing he was cleaning a gun from the sounds of it. I'm not one to watch a whole lot of films, but did go on a film binge in 2020 with 4 movie channels and Al Pacino was one I binged on. This one was the best. "Sea of Love" was a big stand out of his for me too.
I can't remember if you've reacted to this one already - but Meet Joe Black is another Martin Brest film with the same composer, Thomas Newman, doing the score. I don't rate it as high as this but it has the same feel and vibe and can be quite moving and I think is super underrated. Three hours long though! Not baby friendly.

Actually one of my favourite Pacino productions is a hybrid documentary called Looking for Richard, which is about Pacino staging a performance of Richard III and why many American actors seem to feel inadequate performing Shakespeare, and yet feeling that they have finally made it when they do. Very revealing of the actor behind the roles. Also his directorial debut.

I will suggest another film with great acting performances-- a beautifully shot noir film from 1957 unfortunately titled "Sweet Smell of Success." An older film worth being rescued.
The moment he talks to his brother with "I am no good, and never have been" gets me every time. And the speech at the trial is one of the best in the movies history, like the one in A Few Good Men.

This movie gets better with every rewatch. Pacino and the supporting cast totally nail this. Funny , and, in the end, deeply moving. Pacino stepping up to support Charlie always gives me the feels!❤

This movie is the reason I, a totally blind man, put learning to tango near the top of my bucket list. Still haven't managed it, but lord do I want to. And I will be dancing to that song.

There's another movie where Al Pacino is said to be "out of order".... it's called "...And justice for all" and is even better than this(according to me anyway, though he did get an Oscar nomination for it) a court drama/comedy. Also, Scent of a Woman got us Gigli.... Martin Brest directed this and Gigli, Pacino was only in it to do Brest a favor after getting him his first Oscar finally. Lastly, it's criminal that Al Pacino only has one Oscar, he should have multiple

I'm Canadian and live on the border with Michigan, means I get to celebrate double Thanksgiving. Canadian Thanksgiving is October 14th and then I drive over the border and celebrate it again in November with American friends. I make sure to bring quality maple syrup and bake butter tarts(a Canadian delicacy).

There are a handful of films from the past that were great films in my younger years that are absolutely gut wrenching as an older man. This one, Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting, The Green Mile, and Steel Magnolias pop to mind. I guess the decades of experience, trial, turmoil and loss soften up even the hardest heart like room temp butter.

Al Pacino was amazingly good in this and he deserved his Academy Award. I am.so sick and tired of people saying he didn't.
While it's not described as a romance movie, in my early 20s I discovered that many women in their 30s and above seemed to love the dance scene.
I cannot imagine how anyone wouldnt find that scene magical. He was BLIND and charmed the pants off a lady while teaching her to tango in realtime.
Thank you so much for reacting to this movie. Al Pacino gave one of the greatest performances in his entire career in this movie. I would completely amazed if he ever again gave us anything even close to what he did here. On a side note, the girl who played Donna is Gabrielle Anwar. Her and Chris O'Donnell were also in The Three Musketeers (1993) together. James Rebhorn who played Mr. Trask was in Carlito's Way (1993) with Al Pacino.

Pacino does a great job acting in this movie, but he also does a great job of portraying someone who is blind. For example, something as small as him grabbing the piece of paper with the phone number on it. A normal person doing that would move their head to look at where the paper is so they could grab it. But being blind, Pacino's character would not do that. They would keep their head motionless while reaching out with their hand to grab it. This is not easy to do - we're so used to looking with our eyes when we reach out for things.
A decade ago, I learned to dance the tango because of that scene. And I met my wife, who's a tanguera. Carlos Gardel's "Por Una Cabeza" is still my all-time fave tango song, which is a horse-racing analogy for gambling everything for the love of a woman and winning or losing her by the smallest of margins (por una cabeza = by a head). Talk about taking chances for the best things in life, which is what 'Scent of a Woman' is about.
One of Al Pacino’s best qualities as an actor was his ability to yell and go on angry tirades. He was cast in several roles specifically for that ability, IMO. His voice was so strong. When he yelled at you, he made you very afraid. He didn’t give full force yelling in this film, but his voice made you pay attention!
I remember watching The Insider with some peeps and this one dude was hella disappointed that Pacino didn't have a "big All Pacino speech" moment like he was used to lol

Pacino is amazing and O’Donnell is great too, but I like to go back and watch Philip Seymour Hoffman’s scenes again. He went on to become such an incredible actor, and even in small parts like this one, you can see his talent bubbling over.

Being a big Pacino fan since the 90's, I noticed that he dances in pretty much all of his films, even if it's just for a few seconds.
Even in the Irishman, at his age, as Jimmy Hoffa, he's on the dancefloor.

So glad you've finally seen this masterpiece. I remember at the time that some of the press suggested his Academy Award win was a 'consolation' win for the seven times he'd been nominated over the previous twenty years but missed out. I always felt that was disrespectful - this is a *stunning* performance from Pacino. He absolutely nailed his portrayal of being blind and then coupled it with a range of emotions that is just wondrous. A sadly under reacted classic and I hope we see more of the reactor community pick up on it. #Hooah
A masterpiece of storytelling and one of Pacino's best performances ever, if not THE best. Every time I watch this movie it feels like the first time, because everything it does never gets old or boring.

When one loses his sight he feels that he has lost all control of life…that was what Frank was feeling. The weekend with Charlie he was reminded he has still control of his life… he could still lead in the tango, still drive a Ferrari…and finally, to stand up for Charlie to the principal of the elite school. That’s why when he said he’ll never drive again… was so sad. Losing control of one’s life is a real tragedy. In Frank’s words… an amputated spirit. Is great that Frank in reminding others…he reminded himself that he is still in control of his life… his flirting with Charlie’s teacher was a new beginning for him. What a great movie! I loved it the first time I saw it… so long ago. Glad you guys love it too!

A friend of mine liked to channel Pacino in this film. He'd be working in a photographic darkroom. Someone would knock on the door and he'd say, "Wudda ya want?!" When he heard the answer he'd say, "I'm in the dark here!"

I'm recommending "Terms of Endearment," which doesn't relate to "Scent of a Woman" in any way other than being an Oscar winner. "Terms of Endearment" has no reactions to it, so maybe it gets blocked, but youll love the film nonetheless. It stars Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson, Jeff Daniels, John Lithgow, Albert Brooks, and Danny DeVito, and it is written and directed by James L. Brooks. It won Oscars for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Lead Actress (MacLaine, though Winger was also nominated Lead), and Best Supporting Actor (Nicholson). It's a dramedy, and the ending requires tissues, but you have to see this brilliant film. Winger and MacLaine are beyond magnificent, and the screenplay is, as well.

Hooah! Love this film. I spent decade in the US Army long ago. I don't say hooah as often as a comma like I used to, but it does come out quite a bit still. It's just a part of that culture.

well Now samantha and You have seen Pacino's tour de force in his Oscar winning role. Just a fabulous film in the list of ones he has done other than the GOdfather trilogy. I do hope you 2 can see him in SERPICO done in 1973 which was even better imo, based on True events in The time when graft and other things were exposed in the NYC police system. Happy Thanksgiving! I first watched this movie back in 1993. I was 21. At the time I didn’t really appreciate it and thought Colonel Slade was a real a-hole. I didn’t really like the character.
Fast forward 10 years later. I’m watching the movie on the Encore Channel and I loved it. Seeing it as a thirty-one year old man versus a 21-year old, I grew to feel empathy for Colonel Slade and I love the mentor/pupil relationship between he and Charlie.
One of the many things I love about this movie is that both Charlie and Frank taught each other. Frank grew as a person just as much as Charlie. The only thing I was disappointed in is we didn’t get more of Donna. Gabrielle Anwar is so lovely.
I’m so glad they never did a sequel to this movie. I imagine we’ll someday get a reboot called “Scent Of A Man” where they gender swap and have Meryl Streep play Colonel Slade. Who knows? I like your suggestion of Christopher Walken as Slade, but Pacino really was and is the best choice.

This was the first drama film I ever saw... My older brother always took me with him to movies so I could experience what it was like having to watch a movie out only in theaters rather than having to wait until it was out on rental... It was how I discovered that I liked films that weren't just action flicks... Man I miss my big brother!
The best dance scene in the movies, not to mention Frank's speech at the school.
I was a kid when this movie came out and thought this movie looks stupid. Later when I got in my teens my friend kept saying hoo ha all the time. I asked him one day why he kept saying that. He told me it’s from A Scent of a Woman. I said I never seen that movie and it looks stupid lol he let me borrow his VHS tape. I watched it and I loved the film. Pacino was amazing for this film. My friend told me Pacino visited a place for blind people and watched how they moved and learned how to do everything by observing them.
“And Justice For All” will break you guys, hits like a 12 gauge and still is the best representation of the legal system day to day for a low level Defense Attorney
Walken and Pacino in Stand up Guys is a treat.
I only knew this movie from the Seinfeld reference previouslyi but it was such a sweet film :')

The best Pacino performance that isn't talked about nearly enough
Yep, this was Pacino getting an Academy Award for best actor for that year vs Clint Eastwood best actor nominee for Unforgiven. I think Eastwood would have won if it wasn't for this movie.
Excellent selection and reaction. My two favorite Pacino performances are this one, and ‘Donnie Brasco’ (1997). Brasco is more subtle and tragic, but so very powerful. I hope you’ll react to that one eventually. And to top things off, it’s also one of Johnny Depp’s best performances.
You guys have to see The Three Musketeers: Chris O'Donnell (Charlie), Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and TIM CURRY! Also, I'm 90% sure that "Donna" co-stars in it, too.
Pacino gets so much, well deserved, love for his role.
But can we take a moment to just let the music wash over us a moment? Newman is such a wonderful composer.
The main title and 'Assembly' scores perfectly evoke the emotions and imagry of a prep school, easily one of my favorite themes ever put to paper.
The rest of the score, each theme, fit each scene like a glove. The intensity of, '45 in 25,' and the sweet romance of 'Fleur de Rocailles'..... swoon.
Also the choice of the music for the Dance Scene is both great and reminds me of Schindler’s List. 😅
