Awesome video! Keep in mind though not to be a jerk to new players because their costume is lacking or their backstory is weak. Thats not where value comes from, especially if they're just starting out. All LARPers have value. Give them room to grow.
A lot of these rules apply to the returning players as well. Be respectful, helpful, a decent human being, ect. THEY'RE the ones that are scared, curious, and (well) new. Unless you're a spooky NPC, try not to scare them too much. LARP is fun! Make sure its fun for EVERYONE.

I had my first LARP around this time last year and believe me - over anything else, it's best if you just try to get involved. Even if your character story is a bit lacking, even if you don't have the best costume, if you're out there, in the mix, talking to people, listening to conversations, doing tasks for people - if you're clearly making an effort, it makes all the difference.
We ended up so involved. We ran to tell our faction the latest news - we were there at the beginning of the final smackdown, shouting for help. We were *there*.
Additionally, everyone wants to have fun - that's the point, after all! Within about an hour of time in, our faction's NPC pulled us to the side, spoke to us IC for a moment about how we were doing and then went OOC to check we were ok mentally and everything. Even something as simple as that made us both relax so much more, and it made it easier to seek him out when we did have a problem.
After the LARP finished, we got invitations. Quite a few people just coming up, saying they enjoyed playing with us and offering us places in their factions in other systems, or just mentioning other games we might enjoy. The same NPC from before has asked me and my friend to join a group for a huge LARP event and we couldn't be more excited.
So, get involved. That's the most important tip. Everything else follows suit.

Every larper started as a new player. How well a larp treats their new players decides if the larp flops or flourishes :)

My first event was in August of this year (and my next one is next weekend) and I have to say that it was probably the most fun I've ever had. I was so scared I thought I'd be sick or make myself pass out by accident but it turns out that the nervousness actually added quite a lot in those first few moments. After that, it was smooth sailing- I made friends, fought monsters and became something I thought I'd never be in a million years- a healer. I hate medic characters in video games because they're often left behind and get most of the backlash if something goes wrong. In larp though, it's the complete opposite. It's dangerous out there so we do what we can to keep everybody alive. The people there watch out for eachother out of game too! I have anxiety and am prone to really nasty panic attacks if I'm backed into corners or woken up suddenly in the middle of the night. Multiple times people asked how I was doing in that regard and I knew then that my nervousness was really all for nothing. This is the nicest most talented group of people I've ever met and I can't wait to see them again in a week. :D

My friends have been larping for a while and I'm almost old enough to join the ones in my area. Their biggest bit of advice was 'be prepared to forget the word no for a few days' take every opportunity you get to find a feel for what you like .

My first LARP event was a month ago, and there I arrived at the GM's house the day before together with a friend, where we helped on the preparations (didn't knew so much work went into LARP). Even helped sewing some costumes for npc'ers. For the event itself I had sewed my own costume completely, and had a fun time, even though my feet were hurting because of some terrible blisters I had gotten two days before (felt like I was being stabbed in the heals all the time walking).

A Girl with Blonde Hair Getting a good pair of shoes also helps a lot with the blistering--and packing some of those incredible blister pads after the fact.
Glad you had a great first event! :)

Well my best friend did this thing called Amtgard or should say started it, like 5 years ago. Anyway he went to an event told me about it, and I was like...sure i'll give it a shot as it sounds amazing. So I went to the one park they did it at, for the first day I just observed things, like how people fought, got the just of it all. Then the next weekend I had my garb, and swords ready to go, mind you I was pretty terrible starting out. Months later I went to an event...and needless to say it was fun. BUT the best part for me at least, was learning different fighting variations and tricks from the other people. There was always something to do, but the Journey North is what my group is looking at currently, so much more to do, another experience, and more tales to speak of once we return home.

I was introduced to larp by my boyfriend, he had been doing it for years and kept telling me these awesome tales. I basically forced him to take me with him. I borrowed all my kit off him and others and I didnt even have a weapon yet everyone so nice and friendly they helped me out. I was scared and uncomfortable until time in, after 10 mins I was in the zone, it didnt feel silly or weird it was just awesome! :D

My first event was....interesting. I arrved with a group of people at my local comic shop. When I got there i was quiet, stood under the radar and relatively useless. That was until main mod.
When it was time for main mod I stood behind, feeling rather low leveled and felt I would be more of a liability than a help. After about a halg hour I turned on the radio I was given, just to see how things were going. It was like listening to a mad house. Damages were being yelled, people giving out orders, screaming about medics being down. I don't know what came over me but I sprang into action.
I gathered those of us left behind, unified them to protect themselves while I go and try to rescue the rest of the town...all while fonal fantasy 13's song blinded by light was playing on my phone.
I ran up the hill, fueled by adrenalin and regret, grabed a medic and rogue that were returning from a side mission and the three of us threw everything out of whack enough for the PCs to regroup and to get a better hold of the situation.
Not bad for my very first larping event ever.

hope im not too late commenting on this video but i have recently been on a binge watch on LARP related stuff and became interested in taking part, however i find myself questioning my ability to ask around and ask friends to join me, basically im socially inept so i feel that whilst i want to express myself through larp i also feel that meeting new people in a different environment will be challenging to say the least and i would be subject to mockery from family and friends. Through this long winded speech im basically asking what the best way to get over the wall of self consciousness and low confidence is. Thank you in advance and i hope im not wasting your time by asking something that has already been answered.

    • @KristinBrumley
      @KristinBrumley Před 9 lety +1

Midge Bro Gaining self-confidence is something I know I work at constantly. People think I may be confident, even when I feel terrified. The biggest thing to remember is to change your vocabulary and way of thinking. When I feel scared of a social situation, I say to myself, "I'm not scared. I'm uncomfortable."
Being uncomfortable is a lot less intimidating than being scared. You can survive discomfort. You can get past it.
Don't let your discomfort stop you from doing something you may love--especially when it could change your life. Do it. Do it because it's your life.

Kristin Brumley words of wisdom :) sincerely thank you, this is not only great advice for roleplay but words to live by and i think that im ready to give it a go (after i get my character and costume ready) but seriously my diddly little paragraph of gratitude doesnt even begin to thank you enough :) cheers for your help and quick reply, and hopefully now i can larp to my heart's content.

What if someone has never played before. They may have terrible costume. They may be nervous. Lets not beat down o. them is my advice. I have sbeen new people
le spend time on costume and character creation, to get slotted at their first game. This vid has good advice but does not cover the responsibility of the old players and system's organisers.
