    I remember driving a Cent ARV while serving with 77 AES Fitter Sect, 32 Armd Engr Regt. The drivers hatch opening was a tight fit for me. I likened the gear changing to disco dancing, between doubling the clutch, selecting the gear, AND pulling a steering tiller. All great fun until you missed a gear and had to stop and pull off in first gear with the vehicle commander shouting abuse through the headset. LOL Then there was the fun and games of fitting and setting up the christmas tree (gear linkages). Aaah the joys of being a tan mechanic.

    Started life in the RE’s as an AVRE driver, for some reason we still had to do the gunnery course, 6 shots down the range at Lulworth, all missed the target, but I was told they were close enough for a pass, moved over to AVLB’s not long after that, the 2nd seat in the front was for the ‘Combat Engineer’, although they were never fully crewed and it was used as a place to store kit

    I had a conversation a few years ago about a prototype Centurion at the Alvis factory in Coventry. It was towards the end of WW2 and young apprentice drove it in an area of the factory which had a wooden floor. It went through the floor into the basement below. It was too much hassle to get it back out so they just left it there and concreted it over. The site is now the Red Triangle retail park so maybe its still there. There is also apparently a unused war time hospital ward under there. Whether either or both are true who knows.

      We used traditional "bracketing" methods which worked very effectively against static targets. That said, my gunner "Tabs" Rennie could hit a hard target at 1800m with his first round 9 times out of 10. Gunnery was a skill bordering on an art.

    They had Centurions when I did my Military Service in Sweden, 1975-1976. Never got a chance to drive one, but I heard something about the gear changes. "Don't bother with the clutch" they said, "put your Left foot on the gear lever instead and pull the Left steering lever halfway". I guess it was to the point where the Left clutch disengage but before the steering brake on that side applies. Too bad I never got to try it myself. / B.

    Amazing videos. I am hooked, been watching all of them !!!! When your driving the tanks around the yard the drivers hatch is open and your head is out for that amazing viability.....
    -Is there a 2 position seat for driving with the hatch open or closed?
    -Are there viewing windows for the driver to drive hatch closed? I assume that the view is greatly reduced if there are windows.....
    -Would they have ever had wing mirrors for the driver to aid with reversing, or did they just use people as you do to help direct the driver? Could you make some magnetic ones to stick on for manoeuvring about you yards helping to get everything lined up and parked straight?
    -Do the hatches lock from the inside to stop the enemy opening them if your inside ? (When at war!)
    Very impressed with the quality of your team for their work, their jokes, their banter and interesting hats and tee-shirts!
    Thanks for sharing all this fascinating stuff!

    From what I recall of reading the role of AVREs - though admittedly for Churchill AVREs in Normandy, the 'copilot' position as you describe was for a combat engineer who could dismount and rig bangalore torpedoes and whatnot.
    I know I've said it before but that Centurion engine bay is mint.
    Also you don't just want to paint over the corrosion, leaks, and previous layers of paint? Well, that's you disqualified from an engineering role in the Russian Army.

    Your extra AVRE seat would probably be for a demolition person - they’d jump out and set charges etc when the AVRE had rolled up to something that was in the way, thus protecting them from getting shot running up to it, and the tank providing some cover while they were outside.

    • @GP30277
      @GP30277 Před rokem +2

      It’s supposedly a designated navigators position, but from speaking to a TROG vet who served and delivered them in West Germany, only ever saw them 3-4 man crewed and nobody ever used the 2nd front seat. Strange addition for sure.

    • @siras2
      @siras2 Před rokem +2

      Actually, this position was designed to be occupied by a co-driver (dozing was physically hard work and drivers would need to swap over for a break) he would also act as a spare bod for general crew tasks and would be 1st to be put out on guard duty etc., as he was usually the most junior on the AVRE. Not always available on exercises due to manpower limitations but the vehicles that deployed to the gulf went fully-crewed. As for being a "demolition man" or "navigator" I'm afraid this is just nonsense.

    • @siras2
      @siras2 Před rokem +1

      You're correct, the breach block is very short and crews visiting from Chieftains and Challengers were always amazed at how much space there was in the turret - a different story once the vehicle was fully "bombed up" for war though as the 30 x 165mm rounds were massive and were all stowed in (and under) the turret.
