One of the best instructional videos I've watched! I think even I could do it with your wonderful tutorial video to follow. However, it does look very tedious, time consuming, and aggravating. Everyone who fusses about how much a mechanic charges to fix their vehicle should watch a video of the work the mechanic has to do for the job.
I appreciate the comment made at the end. I have a good amount of experience working on cars, but have been thinking about taking my truck to the shop for plugs.
Great video. I spent a few hours getting tools together and replacing one plug. But after watching video. I think I will leave it to a professional mechanic. 99 F150 4.2L V6.
Wow, clever letting the air out of the front tires! Never thought of that.
Thank you so much 4 plug a headache but going to do it today😊
Thanks for the video. It is always nice when a list of tools is included. Good job!
I am so thankful that I have two cedar blocks that are wide and deep. I put them next to the tire and it raises me up about 8 inches. It is much easier than letting the air out of the tires! Oy veh!
Make a separate video, I wanna see how you get them out.
Great video with excellent insights and tips. Thanx!!
Cleanout those holes and pre-soak the plug well. I hear the impact works well too. Nice trick with the tires being flattened. Big help for the 4x4 trucks. Never seen that before.
Thanks for the video! Keep them coming!
I enjoyed the video, friend. Thank ya
I like to curse out the engineers that decided to bury the engine so far back into the cowling. Ford needs to get people that repair these things involved in the design.
Very helpful, thank you
I would be embarassed to be an auto engineer and design some of these vehicles! They should work on their own shit designs.
@James Mclean have you ever worked on an Audi lmao
I offered to change my buddies plugs on his f150 assuming it would be like my Silverado. Big mistake.
@James Mclean
I actually worked at a Caterpillar dealer years ago. They want to sell vehicle s. They dont care so much about the ease of repair. In fact. Some engines are nearly imposible to dissemble I was told.
What ever happened to the good ole days... that does look like a pain.
had a 1999, F250 super duty, with 5.4 and when changed the plug's, the annoying part, was each coil, had 2 small screw's. holding each, currently own a 2003 F150, with 4.6 ,and was much easier with one larger screw, holding the coil, but I did change all 8 coil's, on the F150. and the fuel rail is annoying, but the 5/8" magnetic spark plug set from gear wrench, allowed me to do all on both sides, one of the foreward plug's on driver side, had to use shorter swivel from set, and add a 2" 3/8" extension, but all doable,, hear nightmare stories, on F series. but so far all good !! like your dropping air. had to use a small step ladder.
Thanks, great video. Maybe autozone loans sockets that will help reach the ones in the back too.
To keep them from breaking turn them about a quarter spray carb cleaner down the hole wait a couple hours and take them out
Great video
omg. good job One of the best instructional videos I've watched
Thanks for the video
Great video!
Ok, thought I would try to tackle this myself, but.... No
The mechanic at the Ford dealership told me my spark plug was rusted in and if it broke off in there, he would have to replace the thing that holds the spark plug. He said it would cost around $1,500 if that happened. I told him to leave it. Now that I see this video, I realize he was lying.
Lazy ass mechanic.. this is a known issue and Ford even made a kit to remove them. What a dumbass..
Took me hour And half to just get to Cyl #1 that code told me was misfiring. Took gas attachment bolts out and unseated them to move it outta way. Noticed he didn’t though. It got dark by time I got the 1 cyl plug in, so I put everything together, turned my 2001 Triton v8 4x4 on and no light! Did code search, No code and no skip. Truck only has 81,200 mi on it and the plugs never been changed. Now gonna tackle the other 7 plugs. If I can get away with not having to loosen gas line, that be super!
Thanks for great adviced i was gonna tackle it myself because like to learn .but scared me about breaking. A spark plug 😬hate this but its going to the shop for professionals to fix.ughhh😨
Nice video
Nice video, thanks. Do you put anti-sieze on the plugs?
great video dear Hugo Ztiglitz!
What about that black rubber ring on the old plug? Do you put on the new one?
Thanks for the upload. I'm still suck on cylinder 7 and 8. I will attempt to take the pipe off to get to the cylinder 7. I just hope that frees up room to get to cylinder 8 also. I seen plenty of videos with people removing the fuel rail, but I really didn't want to remove it unless I have to. I have always changed my plugs but my 2001 expedition with only 125k miles has given me the worse problem. My 2002 camaro wasn't no where as bad as this ford.
Same 1-6 was easy I’m stuck on 7&8 but I don’t wanna take the rail off what should I do
@@alexharper9786 I ended up taking the rail off. Just took my time and did it east. I didn't mess up the injector rings either.
You only have to raise ot up far enough to get it out of the way though. Just het a string to hold it out of the way till you are done. Now installing the Cal Van inserts in these engines are a different story. Its easy but you have to follow a video and be sure not to let the C clip come off or the bit will run all the way into the cylinder. It almost happen to me.
@@bbay1977 oh man I appreciate it I’ve been trying to avoid that but nothing else is working for me might try and swivel combo and if that don’t work then imma have to raise the rail
@@alexharper9786 your welcome, good luck on the swivel. I have large hands and had no luck with it.
A thumbs up from me
every video so far has showed coil packs! My 97 does not have coil packs. Anyone have a link for a 97 with just wires and plugs to change? I thought they were all the same but evidently NOT!
Good Video
In my 2000 f150....the 7 cylinder the spark plug s ocket dont fit...any help please
I have a 1999 F150 and I don't have to remove all the stuff that he removed. I think he made this look more difficult than it actually is.
There’s an 11 year difference
I think he said it was a 2001 but I could be wrong
Next time use a 3/8 cordless impact to break 'em loose. They shouldn't break then. It is also very important the plugs are torqued properly. Good video!
Why is everything so hard to fix on fords? I've replaced spark plugs on other vehicles with just a screwdriver
Holy crap broke two off that stinker. Hope the ole girl was worth it. Did it improve the power or just run smoother?l
Good video. I am a ford man. But I hate the set up on this motor. It's a bad design. You make it look easy.
I usually replace plugs on my 68 mustang and 5.0 Coyote motor..piece of cake. But this job i will leave to my expert tech Greg. Thanks for heads up.
Wish you had shown the #4 removal and getting the broken plugs out. I need to do this and those are the problems I'm dreading
number 4 wasn't that bad for me. I used the old nissan tool that I talked about in the video. I'm just glad that one didn't break. That would have been a pain to get that one out.
@@minthillbilly what size spark plug socket u used?
How did u remove?#4 plug out passenger side I’ve tried multiple extensions and that sucker won’t get out
Man I have a question. I have a 2000 f150 with the 5.4. And on the number 6 cylinder I pulled the coil pack off and shot air down inside the spark plug well. It shot out oil when I did it. What could that be. The plug was tight too. I'm scared the head could have a crack. Please get back ASAP. thank you
I'm 20 years old and have worked on cars most of my life, I just dont make enough money for a shop to work on my trucks/cars. I'm a shade tree mechanic lol
Appears that those plugs were put in originally without anti-seize. I use Motorcraft NICKEL anti-seize exclusively on steel to aluminum interfaces now. If I could afford the stuff for nuclear reactors, I'd use that.
How long’s that take ya?
#4 is on the passenger side rear, not on the driver side.
Getting to the back two coils/plugs on the drivers side is the hardest part of this whole job... and you skipped over it. :(
Sorry about that. Was trying to keep my video under 15 minutes. I think the back one on the passenger side is the most difficult. We can agree to disagree. Have a good day!
@Hctibeyb hey I was wondering how you got the back 2 on the drivers side out? I've changed all the plugs but cylinder 7 and 8. I had to place calvan inserts in cylinder 2 and 3. Kills me how they just blow the plugs out but the calvan inserts fixes that problem.
@Hctibeyb okay thanks. I will have to go pick one up tomorrow.
thanks man
What size socket ignition coil
I seen video its 7 mm
I've got the 4.2...
But nobody shows how to do the number 6 plug
Ford owners: flatten the tires to reach over the fenders for the plugs billiy bob!
Chevy owners: hey grab a step stool to reach over the fenders for the plugs!
Im a Ford guy but you got a point there! WTF?..decrease air pressure in the tires to be able to reach into the engine bay? Over 40 yrs doing some (not all) of my own wrenching on all types of motors, Suzuki, VW, Ford, Honda, Dodge, Chevy, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Triumph, BMW and Fiat I have seen some crazy ideas.
Nice one! I had a good laugh!
I got an 89 460 to do and i can tell it's not going to be fun lol
Number 8
Is this a 5.4?
Yep
You don’t have to take the air out of your tire. Step ladders do exist
After watching this, I think I'll just pay somebody to do it.
Coulda just got a step stool instead of doing all that to lower the truck 💀
Do not remove the computer.... it will erase memory... Then it has to go to a FORD dealer to be reprogramed...
God damn
Look my
Worst how too ever. Thanks for showing us nothing. I had to take the fuel rail off. Did you show that? Nope! Didn't tell which plugs or coils to use! Luckily I found another video.
You shouldn't have to take off the fuel rail if you have the right tools and know what you're doing. Use Motorcraft plugs and re-use the factory coils unless there're bad or very high mileage. Use only Motorcraft coils, or perhaps Denso if you have to. Also, chill out bro!
Great video
