So this was my truck that I shipped to Brian. 2005 with 122k miles, oil changed religiously every 3k miles alternating between Mobile 1 and Royal Purple. Timing service with OEM Ford parts and HV oil pump was installed 20k prior, I was talked out of doing the rollers at the time by my mechanic. Truck started to progressively go down on power and noise would just get louder. I already invested quite a bit into it and would rather ship it to Brian to fix than buy a new truck. With this fixed I should be good for another 100k easy. 4k for service and round trip transport. Truck runs like NEW, Thank you Brian!!

I had a tapping sound just like that on my 4.6 3v. I tracked it to cyl 5, pulled the cover and inspected everything. I ended up pulling and testing all the rollers and lifters on the driver's side. Nothing was broken. I was fearing a noisy valve so I went to pull the spark plug to put a camera in th cyl to see what th valves and piston top looked like.
The spark plug was loose enough I could spin the socket with my fingers. A loose spark plug ended up being the the source of the noise. Lesson of the day, don't forget to start with the easy stuff first. 😩

I love your videos. I live in Texas so everything comes apart easy and no rust to deal with. I lived in New Hampshire for years and felt like more of a rust repair man than a mechanic. I own a 2014 EL King Ranch 4x4 that I did a timing set at 120k. I just bought a 2008 EB 2wd. And I bought it cheap with a terrible timing rattle. I have it torn down now and bought the parts with your links, including the oil pump. The odometer reads 220k and two of the guides were completely gone. Some chewing in to the oil pump, case, block, head, crankshaft tone ring, ect, but nothing serious. The engine had all ford parts and the phasers were still good. The drivers side tensioner had come apart. I’m doing all new ford parts including starter, water pump. There is only a small bit of scoring on the passenger side came caps. Only on 2 of them all the others look great, really great for the mileage. All the roller followers looked great and I was going to reuse them until I saw this video. Thanks again for all your great videos and info. I get requests a lot to make videos of some of my repairs and I’m still thinking about it. I have a great fix for electric running boards and a few other quirky things on fords. Maybe one day I’ll get around to posting them.

I have the same concerns about that super small diameter oil hole. I foresee the possibility of tiny bit of some carbon or lint or any other odd ball foreign matter plugging it up and you know what is going to happen then! I even wrote Makuloco about this and considered trying to drill them out. Turns out the steel is hardened and that small a bit would be breaking regularly. Makes it worse that the original hole was done before the roller bearing was installed and the angle cannot be matched now if I did attempt to redrill.

Brian, thank you for the quality instructional videos. I own a 2005 F350 4X4 with the V10 3V 161,000 miles. Is this something I should be replacing on this V10? Everything seems to run good on it. No noticeable noise, I only put 4-5,000 miles a year on it, mostly towing. I change the oil once a year with Mobil 1 full synthetic. Thanks for any recommendations.

Have you had any rocker arms cause damage to a valve ? If so do you have any videos about that? New subscriber, newer than novice with mechanical understanding. Your videos are extremely in depth and exactly what I’ve been looking for! I’m not confident in fixing something like this myself but it is nice to be able to communicate and understand with the person who will be doing the labor.

Love the channel man! I just wanted to share a issue I noticed. As others have experienced, what comes up from the link says it does not fit my truck (2006 FX4). I notice that in the when the page comes up, it has the new part number in the search bar at the top, but its bringing up the old part for whatever reason. For anyone else who maybe be scratching their heads over this the way I have been, I'll point out that in reading the reviews people are confirming that despite ordering the old part number they are in fact receiving the revised part.

Hope they'll get back to the classical cam to tappet design with no rollers and improve that if possible, because yes, the roller doesn't have enough or good lubrication on it's small bearing which starts to wear out first and from there the domino comes into play.
    Great video man!

as a retired Mechanic of 48 years i always used OEM unless Customer wanted different - and honestly when i retired from the field ( even Diesel ) the one Engine i never had or got the chance to Rebuild was the Zero set Static Timed Engines - when those started on the market was about the time i went to Diesel until retirement - any major work like this i would always state to replace all components not just what is wrong or it will be back for service shortly after with more problems -- i would even pull the oil pan on some cases to see if any damage in the bottom half of the engine ( crank shaft , end caps , connecting rods , Main Bearings ) my motto was if its not right it does not leave !!! seen many fast repairs go horribly wrong

Took out the cam saw metal shavings, the CAM needs to be replaced, but do heads need replacement too? Looks like some scoring on the towers where they hold /meet the camshaft in place.

With the increased back pressure they provide would you still recommend switching to the Melling M360HV oil pump or do you think the OEM pump will suffice now? Thanks again.
