That poor woman was so maligned for so long for merely being brave enough to take a stand against something she felt was wrong. Her bravery gave me the strength to finally fight back against the abuse I was suffering as a child, and I have always loved her for that. If not for her, I would have been dead by my own hand before I made 13 years. I'm 46 now, and doing everything I can through my own music and teaching to try to carry on rescuing the damaged and abused kids that I encounter. If not for her, I would not be here to do that.
Beyond her bravery, her music was just so beautiful! It's a shame that she had to suffer so much to have that gift. Truly amazing, delicate, damaged soul. I hope she is finally able to find peace.

I'm going to tell on myself... I've judged Ms O'Connor poorly for many years, ever since she tore up the picture of the Pope on live TV (Saturday Night Live, and for once I was up that late and watching when it happened). Reaction in the audience was immediately negative and it made the news. Her next appearance at a big concert with several musical artists made the news too, as she was booed from the stage and was seen crying in Chris Kristofferson's arms backstage. I admit that I was angry enough to think she deserved the mockery. Years later, she apologized, but she claimed to have become a nun for a sect that claimed to be Catholic, but seemed a bit suspect. Either way, I was mollified, but still didn't care much for her.
When I heard about her death, I was indifferent.
But now, I hear this, and I am ashamed of myself, ashamed for judging someone I didn't know.
Thank you Mr Wolcott, for taking the time to show us who Ms O'Connor really was, since you can best judge another by the way they treat people who can do nothing for them... I am sorry for the loss of your daughter and her true friend.
And thanks to Letters Live. This needed to be said out loud and known far and wide.
And now I will go have a cry for the loss of another human being we really need around here.

You feel ashamed, and so you should. Your newly discovered empathy's too little, too late. You'll probably be punished for it by your hypocritical god, too. That's the sort of thing it loves to do to folks who discover basic human compassion in themselves.

I believe she acted out of personal experience of abuse in the Catholic Church. It was real. And it took another 10-15 years before people started to understand why she did that. Thank you for your comment. It’s brave to publicly say you were wrong. She was ahead of her time and severely mentally ill most of her life. She was a brilliant artist and a truly unique and powerful voice. I hope she sees all of the outpouring of love for her now that she’s gone. ❤

I’m not at all religious but I do believe that people have the right to express themselves by standing up and speaking out when they believe something is not right in any situation or institute that does wrong to people.

What genuine thoughtfulness on the father’s part to write that letter and offer his thoughts…regardless of a person’s beliefs, lifestyle, fame…it never pays to judge or perceive a person to be what you think they are or measure them by your own standards because a lot of people will surprise you and make you realise how wrong you were about them…love, tolerance and peace is what this world needs and this is a perfect example of that…..RIP Louise and Sinaed..❤️❤️🕊️🕊️

Brutal. I was devastated when i heard she died, saw it on a newspaper and somewhat shamefully my first thought was “didn’t she just lose her son?”
She was there for everyone else’s pain and no one was there for hers

Being beautiful to each other is a gift everyone can give, lasts for at least two lifes, and serves as the better part of what being human is!

What an awesome human being she was. Amazing that she never forgot Louise or her family and continued to stay in touch for years afterwards.
I feel sorry for the father, as no parent should have to bury their child, regardless of age, but I’m glad that Sinead and her son and Louise are probably all up in heaven now, talking and laughing and relaxing amongst each other.
Also, Ferdinand is an amazing actor just like his old man is. Looks just like a younger version of Ben.
