- Stuart Clarke (Deputy editor of Hot Press) joins Pat Kenny in studio to remember the great Sinéad O'Connor.
The world has been paying tribute to Sinéad O'Connor, who died on Wednesday at the age of 56.
Those from the spheres of entertainment, politics and beyond have been remembering the Irish singer.
President Michael D Higgins led tributes following her death, stating that his first reaction "was to remember her extraordinarily beautiful, unique voice."
"What was striking in all of the recordings she made and in all of her appearances was the authenticity of the performance, while her commitment to the delivery of the song and its meaning was total," President Higgins said.
"To those of us who had the privilege of knowing her, one couldn’t but always be struck by the depth of her fearless commitment to the important issues which she brought to public attention, no matter how uncomfortable those truths may have been.
"What Ireland has lost at such a relatively young age is one of our greatest and most gifted composers, songwriters and performers of recent decades, one who had a unique talent and extraordinary connection with her audience, all of whom held such love and warmth for her.
"Her contribution joins those great achievements of Irish women who contributed to our lives, its culture and its history in their own unique but unforgettable ways," he added.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said her music was "loved around the world and her talent was unmatched and beyond compare".
Mixed Martial Arts fighter Conor McGregor - who was once welcomed into the ring with O'Connor's voice before a UFC fight - said "the world has lost an artist with the voice of an angel".
He added: "Ireland has lost an iconic voice and one of our absolute finest, by a long shot. And I have lost a friend.
"Rest In Peace, Sinead you are home with your son I am sure."
O'Connor's 17-year-old son Shane died last year.
Further tributes rolled in from musicians from all genres, with Bryan Adams saying how much he "loved working with [her] making photos, doing gigs in Ireland together and chats".
Rapper Ice-T said the singer "stood for something... unlike most people".
Ian Brown of rock band The Stone Roses wrote that collaborating with O'Connor was "magical".
US actor John Cusack retweeted several articles relating to O'Connor - including a video of her famous appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1992, when she tore up a picture of then-Pope John Paul II.
The New York Times paid tribute to O'Connor with a piece headlined: The Night Sinead O’Connor Took on the Pope on ‘S.N.L.’
The newspaper said it was a moment "that changed her career."
British indie group Massive Attack said they were "devastated" by the news of her death.
Meanwhile, the singer Alison Moyet said O'Connor's voice "cracked stone with force & by increment".
She added: "As beautiful as any girl around & never traded on that card. I Loved that about her. Iconoclast.
O'Connor's distancing from the pop mainstream, including her shaved-head look and boycotting of awards, gained her admirers far and wide.
One of her more recent ventures included working on historical drama Outlander, where she was the voice of the opening credits for season seven.
Bear McCreary, the composer of the show's score, tweeted that he was "gutted by the loss", calling her a "warrior poet".
McCreary revealed he had teamed up with O'Connor "writing new songs together, which will now never be complete" and ended his tribute with: "We've all lost an icon. I've lost a friend."

I had the pleasure of meeting Sinéad a few times and we got on fine. Such humility. She was in hospital with me one time, going through some agoraphobia, she was doing a lot of colouring which she was brilliant at. I was out and about one day and picked up a few colouring pencils, no big deal. Anyway I gave them to her when I came back. Well, if I handed her a million quid she couldn't have been more grateful. There was no need to be, it was only a small thing but that was the kind of lady she was. Once she knew you weren't an enemy then you were blessed with her kindness and humility
I was (I'm guessing) in that same hospital, a decade ago for a brief stint. Sinéad was there, a beautiful soul, but unlike the more passive forms of mental health, she was very bipolar, amazing but liable to turn erratic. She was a good person, just momentarily volatile, followed by a caring nature.
Wow!
💚
that's brilliant. I do colouring as well. In fact, I run my own group. Had I known she was my new neighbour, she would have come to our colouring group
The older i got the more i realised sinead wasn't as crazy as the media always potrayed her she spoke so many truths about sensitive topics and issues that were ignored and i think so many people owe her so much gratitude i just hope despite her mental health issues that she suffered from that she is remembered for that beautiful voice we all know and not being afraid to stand up for victims of injustices
What an absolute beauty inside and out R.I.P. Sinead 😢
Sinead was ahead of her time and the world was not quite ready for her. R I P Sinead.
Rest In Peace,Sinead beautiful brave talented woman. She spoke out about child abuse when everybody was sweeping it under the carpet.
she also spoke about abuse by mothers
I thought she just a crazy women when I was a kid, but overtime I realized she just speaking the truth, I can't respect her more, she is an amazing woman
Goodbye Sinead ❤
Same, I just watched Nothing Compares documentary two days ago and was championing her. I was thinking shit she is punk rock (Toby Morse podcast). A true strong Irish woman and a voice for the people, RIP Sinéad O'Connor.
It's heartwarming to hear them remembering Sinead so fondly. Hope she's at peace Rip 🙏🏼
I didnt realise how much i admired her , loved her sound, embraced her strength until now gone. Feel so sad. Such a loss. RIP ❤
Condolences to Sinead's family, especially her children, RIP
Ireland is sad today. Such talent such beauty gone far too soon. RIP Sinead x
many people all around the globe are also sad, she impacted so many lives with her voice and wisdom, she jsut wanted to be heard, be a voice for people
Beautiful super talented young Irish woman. She is now home with her beloved son. The voice of an angel is at rest. Rest in peace Sinead.
Probably more than anyone as a kid she introduced me to folk music and made the music of the Chieftains and other musicians of that generation more relatable to me. Her version of the Foggy Dew is the best. Hairs on the back of your neck every time. RIP Sinead.
Rest in peace you fealess woman .
You knew the enemy 31 years ago , way ahead of us .
Much love ❤❤❤❤.
Sinead O'Connor...Dolores O'Riordan....😔😥 RIP
A towering volcanic voice spewing - emotion & honesty - a once in a lifetime lady of enormous talent - thank you Sinead RIP🙏
this is what i like to see right now, even though the grief is really immeasurable. Sinéad was our outspoken rebel from Dublin when Ireland was still at it's near most conservative, her voice and activism was a rallying call against interference from the Catholic church to an extent Italy or Spain never saw. the women suffered particularly, Sinéad herself found herself in a Magdalene laundry for the best part of 2 years. the Irish state has failed these women, and all the abused. O'Connor risked a lot to take a stand against injustice. then theres losing her own son to suicide
Im going to be honest and Im a serious MH sufferer and also Irish: the Irish state is systematically failing us all. we currently still have the second WORST public health system in all of Europe, rip Sinéad, heartbroken
I didnt realise how much i admired her , loved her sound, embraced her strength until now gone,
From her debut Album 'Lion and the Cobra in 1987 to 1990 number one bill board single hit Nothing Compare 2 you.and I would never forget Sinned preforms with Roger Water and his Band PINK Floyd in Berlin that was one of the pink Floyd hit 'mother'was an incredible and iconic and golden voice ever.
I still have a memory of the Hillgrove Hotel in 1983 & Christy Moore introduced a young lady from Glenageary & Sinéad played a song which I cannot remember now bust she was impressive as a 16 year old to another 16 year old !!
thanks for this. RiP Sinead youre a legend.
Sinead means God is Gracious
And Shuhada in Arabic means martyr
Both names are beautiful. She definitely was a *strong* warrior of a woman. Good people get tested the most and Sinead was most definitely one of the good ones. God have mercy on her soul.
Thanks for this interview pat......your well missed with your openness and real views of the irish people..may god look after sinead in her hours of peace..
Completely ahead of her time. So sad 😢. Rest in peace
There will never be another. May she rest in peace and power.
Her vulnerability was so powerful. RIP
True fact.
Nothing Compares to You was as good as a love song gets. No need to talk about bipolar or anything. She was abused, pure and simple and she let the organisation responsible that she wasn’t going to forget it…
Lovely, warm and insightful tribute
Yes indeed! Please God she is at peace. Desperately sad news. RIP 🙏
*Excellent program. Rest among the Stars Sinèad*
Shane mc Gowan and Sinead’s 1995 haunted blows me away . I came across earlier today and I completely forgot about that song but I did exactly what I did in 1995 , listened to it 50 times . What a tune …. 1995 was not a great time for me and the continuous listening of the song was a great comfort or distraction
RIP dearest Sinead. You were a true phenomena ❤
Rest in peace. Sinéad brave and honest 🙏
Dark day for our island …our fire breathing Celtic queen😢….devastated
Fantastic tribute to a legend. Rest in peace.
Sinead was a disruptive singer since she broke a Pope's photo on SNL as a way of denouncing the Church's abuses, which made her become one of the first victims of Cancel Culture. Nevertheless, time proved her right, so I hope she can find the peace that she never found on the Earth. R.I.P. Sinead.
Ireland cancelled her - it was the era of Fr Ted having to be made by Channel 4. The journalist who uncovered the Sweepstakes scandal nearly two decades earlier was also written out of recent history.
"These are dangerous days - to say what you feel is to dig your own grave."
- Sinéad O'Connor
my heart is broken today. rest in peace.
She spoke out about the catholic church when no one had the guts to do it she was a beautiful person bless her
She was a force of nature. Well put.
R.I.P. Sinead.
When we sing, we sing together. When we die, we die together,. When we hurt we hurt together and when we grieve we grieve together. I hope she goes on her way with the speed and ferocity that was present had in life.
She told the truth. People don't like that.
Irish icon
My heart can't handle, take, her death
Famous people , Royality, Kings and Queen,,why be expected to bow to any of them, they are flesh and bone, as all humans are...Make no God of any human....RIP..Sinead..
Sweet dreams Sinèad may you rest in peace.
Many years ago, in the earlier days of Twitter when it was quite a nice place to meet people, I ended up in some shared circle with Sinead and exchanged chats. As if the both of us were just ordinary women, shooting the breeze. She was such a generous, kind soul. I'm finding it hard to come to terms with this, I'll be honest. If Sinead can't make it, what hope have I got? RIP, you were a special girl.
I rarely like you Pat , but I heard it live & it was impressive , especially your memory of Sinéad singing 'Paddy's Lament' after your Frontline show & we were all wondering where shall we go now ??
Pat is a top top broadcaster dirty listening to him over 30yrs now
Sinead O'Connor so sad you are gone, you represented fierceness independence and bravery- everything we saw during covid that was missing in 95% of irish adults. RIP. Watch for the crocodile tears of politicians who are responsible for the ongoing failures + shortages of child adolescent mental health services- something Sinead's deceased son Shane badly needed. And look at the state of adult mental health services. If only the irish could be as good at fixing the root issues contributing to suicide as well as they are plamausing the dead.
Sinéad O'Connor (and her Muslim name: Shuhada' Sadaqa) is part of the Ummah - she is a member of our compassionate family of the Global Ummah. May Allah (Sub’ha’na’hu Wa Ta’a’la) Grant her the Highest stages in Jannah-al-Firdous (Highest Heaven) in the company of those whom she loves. May she find the bliss and peace that eluded her in this temporary world. Ameen. Yaa Rabb-al-Aa’la’meen
It's been a horrible week................. terribly sad.
❤May Allah (God) grant our sister Janath ul Firdos (Paradise)
And grant her family Sabr (patience) during this most difficult of time's
Ameen❤
You have left this (dunya) temporary world during the sacred Islamic month...
May your love of listening to the Quran continue in your memory by your family, friends and fans Ameen
May your love and voice for all the oppressed people especially of Palestine live on through your people. Ameen
Perhaps they too will one day understand the truth. Ameen
Lots of love to the Irish people who stand in solidarity with Africa Iraq, Afghanistan, Kashmir and Palestine...
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Ameen

Sinéad was a born Catholic, sometimes agnostic, Muslim for a stint, but after 'finding God & Allah (ironically the same paths to the same supposed Abrahamic deity'), she reverted to agnosticism. She wasn't a Muslim nor of any Christian religion, she was a spiritualist.
💚
May she RIP
If Sinead was a man she would have been respected in the same way as Bob Dylan, David Bowie and many other male rock & punk superstars. Its devastating that she died so young and that she's not apart of this world anymore, she was a shining, beaming star and there'll never be another like her.
Not really I think. Dylan puts his ideas and things in his songs and let's that speak for him. He generally doesn't take on big things/ institutions outside of his lyrics at least in the way Sinead did....
I think Universal Mother is a masterpiece
GOD BLESS HER SOUL RESPECT CASABLANCA
Rest in Peace Sineád.💔
A unique human
R.I.P
Sinead, may you rest in peace. Thank you for sharing your voice. Hope you did not take any vaccines.
I'm sad that people only pay tribute to her when she's dead. She felt so alone and no one ever celebrated her. Not even a documentary shaming SNL, the US, Frank Sinatra and just saying she was right to name the enemy.
But you did not talk to her about her son on the radio she was not invited to the late late show in other words Ireland let her down
I refer you to the McGregor walkout with Sinead ufc
The fighting face of a nation
She was still is and get you some passion and tingles when she sings on that said walk💚☘️🔥✊🏻

❤
I never had much time for the woman however it can not denied that she was talented and had a troubled life and i hope she is at peace.
A Muslim saint ❤ very intelligent.
"This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian's journey," she wrote.
“All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant," she added. "I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada' - Shuhada' Davitt." She later changed her last name to Sadaqat.
The way she recited the Shahadah was incredible ❤
She was treated hideously by Catholics and others after SNL. I cheered when she ripped up the image on SNL She was a consummate humanitarian, it turns out that she was right on every count. Shame on the millions who violated her brilliance, she was a unique creature, there will never be another like her.
Will miss you. 😢😢What an inspiration she was. czcams.com/video/nPpUkMn2b34/video.html know more about Sinead's faith journey. Islam saved her from her mental health struggles. Faith heals like nothing else. May God bless her soul. Always.
❤❤❤❤
His name after conversion to Islam is Shuhada' Sadaqat RIP !!! May ALLAH welcome you to paradise Ameen 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
0:19 "It was like hearing Bowie doing Starman in 1972"
You are a very old man.
Our Beautiful Muslim sister ❤
She was for some of her life. She was also thought to be irreligious more lately. Let's not forget, many who support her because of religion they do not agree with her if she left Islam but that shouldn't be unacceptable
Not “her truth” “the truth” of what was going on behind closed doors.
انا لله وانا اله راجعون ❤
The only other thing I’d like to say is please please don’t speculate on the cause of death all of you in Irish media. Irrespective of what happened, we have lost her & being disrespectful will achieve nothing and just upset her family.
I agree
@Paul5520 .JUST TO SAY I ABSOLUTELY agree with your message. Let our beautiful lady rest in peace. Respect her family's privacy. ❤️🙏✨️✨️✨️
Ice T is the right people?
Funny how nobody wanted to remember her when she was alive.
Not true, her fans never forgot her. 💔
☝️☪️❤️Nothing Compares to Allah'... Inalillahi wa innailaihi rojiun🥀🖤🇮🇩 May Allah' Almighty grant a high place in Jannah
Cringe. RTE did nothing but slag her off once she complained about the Catholic Church in Ireland. Now they cant wait to say how great she was.
Only delulus misunderstand her
Shame on the Irish they called her crazy when actually she was actually right about everything and the most intelligent and made fun of her for finding the truth that is islam. Don’t pretend to be sad now, when you have hurt her many times. She even wanted to retire despite her love of music because of you. So don’t give me this bs. At least acknowledge the name she wanted to be named. Shuhadah. Just like when they denied Mohammed Ali his name. Have some respect!
Chill ..her many fans adored her..
Never ceases to amaze me how bitter some Religious people can be. Trying to score points over a name. Get a grip. The Irish(including her family) call her by her Irish name. Youre a Muslim so you call her by her Muslim name.
Get your facts correct. Sinead has always had a huge supportive base here in Ireland. My generation absolutely worship her. She was a hero amongst many here in Ireland
