One of my adventures was walking up and down the North Cape for ten months. Also bivybag and tarp. So harsh weather conditions for sure...also minus 20 C and always wet and humid conditions and no time to dry. Sleeping bags become like envelopes...
So important what you did here Joel.I used to camp out at 30º F a lot during the winter. Now I have a Norwegian sleeping porch (upstairs), which I have winter camped out in a great deal. I nested two 2GoGear sleeping bags that are fantastic. They are reversible and have mylar in them. I put the mylar on next to me inside, and reversed the other so the mylar was on the outside. I truly fear for people who, thinking they know what they are doing, just head out at neg 30º F far away from safely. Like you said, practice practice practice is the key to happy arctic temp camping. Thanks so much for doing this. Great idea to use the 2GoGear poncho as a bidi. That would actually let it breathe a bit too in case you get too hot. Sisu and take good care of yourself.
Thanks Cynthia. Double mylar inside and outside sounds like a good tip. Even though I've done my fair share of winter camping, I still try to be humble and properly test my gear (and myself) before pushing it to the limit.
Thanks. It's really just a two layer system, but the bivvy and liner are nice-to-haves and might make it a bit warmer too. My gear room's name, Varusto, is actually a made-up combination of two Finnish words: "varuste" (gear) and "varasto" (storage). Ends up being quite descriptive 😁
Just get a single sleeping bag rated for -20'C.Using multiple sleeping bags is not efficient since you carry 2-3 shells not to mention the faffing around with 3 zippers and hoods . A proper sleeping bag of 1300g down fill should do the trick.Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm is also a awesome sleeping mat.

Mulla ei tosiaan ole ollut mitään ongelmia tuolla Expedillä tätä ennen, vaikka materiaalinsa puolesta heidän ohuin malli. Viiden vuoden takuulupaus tosin piti ja sain rahat tilille. Thermarestilla ei ollut mitään vastaavaa kun just selasin kaikki mallit läpi (lisää tästä tulevalla videolla), ja se heidän paras patjansa on toki lämpimin, mutta äänekäs ja kallis.
Hello Joel. Thank you for motivating and inspirating video ! Try to use aerostat synthetic 7.0 mat from Mountain Equipment. Its 7 cm wide mat which you can safely use alone, without Thermal Rest mat , up to -17 C at least. 😊
Olin saman yön Nuuksiossa testireissulla. :) Mulla on sama makuualusta - hyvin on toiminut, en edes tiennyt että se voi tehdä tuollaista, mitä sulla kävi! Mä laitoin teltassa pari eristealustaa alle, toimi. Oma makuupussi lupailee sinne -20 asteeseen, pelitti paksumman linerin kanssa kivasti. Can you verify if that is the older model Exped mat you have there? The newer ones have a sort of honeycomb print on them, and the delaminating fault should be fixed on those. Reason I'm asking, is that I already have the Exped synmat HL, which I'm very happy with, but I'm considering buying the Synmat Winterlite too. Used the Synmat HL in -11C and that was defintely too cold, so I really need a winter mat. Thanks for a nice test :)
This one had the honey comb pattern as well, BUT it was definitely an older model. I got the new one as a replacement, the name has changed a bit and the packing size seems to be a bit larger now. Check out this video for more info: czcams.com/video/3p4Y76Mffps/video.html
Thanks for the suggestion, but like I answered to someone else with similar suggestion: I don't like to put that much money into an item I might use only a couple of times per winter, especially since I can use my current bags to accomplish the same. Maybe I'll treat myself for some birthday or Christmas or something and get a super expensive bag, but not yet :)
@@TaivalOutdoors I used to have a mountain hardware synthetic lamina bag that was rated to -30F and put a goose down kelty 0 F bag inside of it..it cost be about 220$ and I slept well at -10F in Alaska. The synthetic was good for the moisture of condensation didn't bother the inside goose down. Best of luck
Yeah I used it during my military service and in all military exercises since. It's ok, there's nothing fancy about it. The elastic loops lose their elasticity after some time, otherwise ok foam pad.

Yes I've used this bivvy bag for few years now and have been happy with it. However to save weight, I bought 2GoSystems zip poncho so I can replace this bivvy and my old poncho with just one item. Materials are of course the same as with Velar UL.
Hallo Joel, by how many degrees does a tent cut the temperate, do you think? For example, when it is -20 C outside. What would the temperature be inside the tent? I have limit sleeping bag of -20C, comfort -12C and going to climb Aconcagua!

It depends of course on many factors, but generally speaking it's nothing nearly as bad as it is with bivvy "tents", because with these bags at least you're not breathing inside of them. Usually I stay completely dry, but if I have for example wet sucks or something like that drying inside the bag then there's moisture in the footbox.
My understanding is that our bodies release about one pint of "imperceptible perspiration" during the night. Synthetic equipment doesn't breathe, so you get sweaty.
@@sethmoking Synthetic tends to wick it, whereas wool or cotton tend to absorb it. Breathability (or the lack of it) has more to do with the fabric weave and laminates. But these types of bivvy bags are a lot better in terms of condensation compared to those bivvy coffin "tents", because at least with a bag like this you don't also breathe moisture inside of it.

Sleeping on reindeer skin is unbeatable. Body heat heats up the hollow reindeer hairs, which then reflect the heat back.
Done that and it's not too bad. Not the most comfortable thing there is, but I don't recall being cold.

Those bags are expensive and for the couple of nights in a year when I have the opportunity to sleep in -20c or colder, it's simply not worth it.

Yep, down insulation vs synthetic insulation. The price was too high for me though.
I hope that bivvy bag is highly breathable, if not you're trapping all the moisture in your bags and making your down damp and less lofty.
Yep, it's made of Tyvek and does breathe. I'll rather have a bit of moisture inside of it than have my sleeping bag covered in snow.

bro get the marmot cwm -40F bag. sell for about 500$ thats all the bag you need . Get the exped down mat with built in pump luxury in the snow.

I can fall asleep in a bivy bag inside a house with my head out of the bag and still wake up with a wet sleeping bag
I guess it depends a bit on the individual, but also on the materials of the bivvy bag. This one's made of Tyvek 1460C which is somewhat breathable.
