Scarring alopecia (cicatricial alopecia) affects 7% of patients at hair loss specialty clinics. In this video, Jennifer Krejci, MD shares 3 things you need to know about Cicatricial Alopecia.
It is important to find a physician who can correctly diagnose the cause of your hair loss and determine the best treatment. Patients with scarring alopecia are generally not candidates for hair transplantation but only a physician knowledgeable in scalp dermatology can determine the best treatment, medical or surgical.

There are a lot of women they are seeing in menopause, post menopause who are having scarring alopecia. I am one of them and it is devastating for a woman knowing her hair won't grow back and also not knowing how long this condition will take to burn itself out.

If they can send a man to the moon, then it really shouldn't be that hard to find a cure for scarring alopecia. My goal is to try and not stress about it, because stress isn't good but I must admit it's hard to do when I've experienced MAJOR HAIR LOSS.😫😫😫

Often no biopsy is needed to determine a cicatricial alopecia. There are technologies such as confocal microscopy and trichoscopy that can determine the condition and should be the go to method to make diagnoses, especially if there is no active scarring process taking place. Confocal microscopy can look through the scalp and see the sebaceous glands and bulge regions of hair containing the source of stem cells, their density and presence. It only pays to biopsy if the condition is vague, suspicious, cannot be determined visually or to determine the type of condition going on to best be able to treat it with medications. I feel bad for the people getting biopsies because scarring is a guarantee from them. The industry ought to do more to discourage getting biopsies. Many people regret getting them and being left with an area barren scalp which hairs cannot regenerate outside of a transplant perhaps.

      Sure.
But will your insurance company pay for that type of testing? Most likely not.

I have been losing more hair than normal over the past few months and noticed an area at the back of my crown that was just fuzz from the loss so I scheduled an appointment with the dermatologist and they said they needed to do a biopsy. I hadn't done any research on it and just gave in to getting it done. I'm def worried about the scar it will leave. I get my results back tomorrow.

@@EmreY25 Thanks for asking 🙂 So there is definitely a small scar there. The biopsy was done in the center of back of my scalp so I need be in a mirror with a mirror to see it. It took a full 3 weeks for the spot not to be tender. They said I have Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) caused by something inflammatory in my body. I have really good insurance and they offer a program called 2nd MD who I reached out to for better understanding. They got all of my medical records and suggested that I have the same biopsy read at another center. The term recommended steroid shots monthly, a steroid cream, scalp oil and antibiotics. So far the bald spot hasn't gotten bigger but I'm still losing what I consider a lot of hair loss all over. I'm going to start a cleanse and change my diet to see if that will help.

@@pamelaturner579 I didn't know that you could get a second read for a biopsy that's already been done. I hope the treatments help you out! Good luck!
