- These 4 Indonesian foods proves breakfast in Jakarta may be the best in the world.
What makes the city so special is that it's a city of immigrants. And so people come from all over the country and they've moved here, which means in one city, you can try pretty authentic food from all over Indonesia, but today we're going to limit it to breakfast in Indonesia.
You can support my work at / ayngelina where I share tips that don't make it in videos and behind the scenes content.

Today we're at Pasar Baru which is a neighborhood here in Jakarta and you can get some really interesting dishes here like Ketoepat Sayur.
I'm really excited to eat in Indonesia, because they really embrace spicy sweet, savory, it's like the perfect combination, a little bit of salty. Ketoepat is a coconut milk soup. We've got some chayote, which is like a green squash. And then also we've got that ketoepat, which is the compressed rice. And then on top, you've got crispy shallots. I love shallots I love you know a little bit onion, a little bit of garlic. And it's just smells you can just smell that's something that has been simmered for a long time with the freshness of the coconut. This place has been around since 1965. It's served with some tofu, you've got organic chicken, you've got some potato, you have a full boiled egg and tempeh.
Stop number two we're in the Juanda neighborhood of Central Jakarta at Soto Selan Semarang. The most interesting thing is we've got some deep fried cow brains which Aloy told me is one of his favorites so I have to try that this is the deep fried cow brain called Otak Goreng so we've got some extra fried bits but I'm just going to go in for this. Eat it straight up just like this? You know what if you didn't know it was cow brain you wouldn't know it was cow brain it almost has the texture of tofu but a little bit creamier like a creamy tofu.
In the Karet neighborhood to have bubur ayam now I had it yesterday in a restaurant. Now I'm having it at a cart. This place is so busy just two guys serving alot of dishes a lot of people are picking up to go but you can also get it here. So bubur ayam is influenced by Chinese cuisine, you might know it as congee. They cook rice down in chicken stock until it comes very gelatinous and then also they have chicken in it. So on top of the rice, we have a number of like crackers made from beings called emping. You also have some shredded cabbage, some fried shallots and then we also have cakwe which is a flour that is cooked with garlic so gives a little bit of garlic flavor and then fish sauce and then a homemade sauce on top that's made with tumeric red onion a bunch of spices. This is the best best breakfast in Jakarta.
I am in the Padamangan neighborhood. And I'm at Suka Suka. And it means like like, and this is a really popular spot for nasi kuning. In fact, it's very popular for Gojek and Grab, which is like the Uber Eats of Indonesia. On this nasi kuning breakfast you have fried chicken now it's fried in a mixture of lemongrass, shallot, ginger, red onion, a bunch of things. We also have some fried anchovy. I've got an egg. Cucumber, I've got some sambal, which looks very spicy. And then the nasi kuning itself is rice that's cooked in tumeric and then also coconut milk. I'll try the rice first that rice also has lemongrass.

I want to go back to Jakarta just to eat!
Next time we eat together!
I love all your videos from Ecuador, I live in EC but my family is part Indonesian and I went there when I was 18, I am retired now. Love the country and can not wait to see your videos from there. I wish I could go there again too. But for now I will enjoy your videos. Do U speak any Indonesian, I know it is an easy language to learn, I used to speak it very good myself.
Oh wow that’s quite the coincidence. I don’t speak Indonesian but I am really trying to learn because people here are so nice I want to be able to better communicate. I’ve been in Indonesia for three weeks now and it’s an amazing place.
How delicious !! I wish I could taste it !! You are really good to describe food, we can almost taste it with you. I look forward for your future videos of food in Indonesia.
Oh thank you so much. I wasn’t sure how people would respond to me being out of Ecuador but the food and people here are so beautiful.
Do not intimidate by the sambal, God create our taste bud to adapt. My advice, try with one chilli first until your tongue doesn't feel any burn or spiciness. After that, take 2 chillies. Do the same thing over and over. My limit for now is I can take 15 chillies or more. But there's other people in Indonesia can really take more than I do.
You know the more I eat the more I realize it's not so spicy. Except this week I have a video of East Javanese food and that is SOOO spicy!
@@ayngelina see, i think your taste bud already adapt to the spiciness. Well, I'm from East Java and spicy thing is 'the thing' here lol...
It does make me want to visit there to see if I can do it.
Thank you for taking us with you via video. I'm from Florida. Somehow my post I wrote here got erased so I will try to repeat some of what I wrote. I'm a small eater so one dish there would last me all week ! I love Bandung. they have great singers there as well. My favorite singer in Ujang Andriansyah = Andrian for short. Thank you for taking us along as you visit Bandung.
I found you on an opinion page on one of the news pages since I check out Indonesian news and weather often.
Wow really!!! Did you know I also have a Bandung video? I love it there too and just spent a month to relax so I’ll have a new video with the high speed train and where I stayed. It will come out after the Cambodia series.
You are real food lovers & real traveler . No wonder you get award winner hehe👍👍👍
Really like you energy you have in the video and I love that you explained what the food is, like a bit of history or what it is made from and the cooking methods...its not just boring comment like "hmmm its delicious" "its sweet and savory"😴.
Keep up the great work, cant wait to watch more
Thank you 🙏. What interests me most is the story behind food. Yes there are so many delicious things in Indonesia but the stories make them special.
love how you discover these kind of food :) looks amazing and delicious. keep it up!!! Ayngelina
It's so delicious here, thank you
hi friend ayngelina.. wow waiting for the premiere to eat the world's best breakfast in Jakarta, it's really exciting
have a nice day
Thank you so much 🤗
Haii ayngelina i can't come with you sorry because i'm cooking breakfast for my family forgive me
Iam stay to connected and iam full support for watching your channel
Thank you I really appreciate it. Please share with your friends 🙏
Such a range of food to try in Jakarta. Looks like something for everyone. I would imagine the food is very inexpensive; is that a good assumption? ALL of those breakfast selections looked amazing; I'd go for all of it.
By the way, the little girl behind you in the last scene was hilarious! 😆
So cute right! Indonesia has a wide range of prices for food you can eat from street carts very cheap and then in small restaurants I'd say it's similar to huecas in Ecuador. But overall I find it very affordable to travel
Great video ayngelina...but i miss Andrés and you sharing food.
Thanks
Aww I will let him know! I have been eating with some great people but no one will replace him. And I'll be back in Ecuador in November to share food with him again.
Okay, one of the best food vlog video i ever seen.
Not only the clear shoot (possibly because of the camera 😂), but she also explain a quite bits about the dishes. So, this is what we called food vlogging, not fake food vlogging but only eat and say "this is good, i like it..".
Btw, that lontong ayam cap go meh really disturbing my inner peace here, somethinf keep saying inside my conscience "you gotta try that..you.gotta.try.that"
Thank you so much for the kind words. I really try to share what I learn.
Hey Ayngelina. Following your request on this video, I am now a subscriber on your channel 😀. As an Indonesian descent currently living in Singapore, my favourite breakfast from your video is nasi kuning. Singapore can claim that they also have lontong sayur (equivalent of ketupat sayur in Indonesia) and Zhou (equivalent of bubur ayam in Indonesia) for breakfast. But here nasi kuning can only be found at Indonesian specialty restaurants. And the price is not cheap. I am very proud of nasi kuning and its "big sister", nasi tumpeng. Keep creating awesome videos about Indo food, Ayngelina!
Thank you so much for subscribing! I was actually thinking about going to Singapore when I have to do a visa run and exit the country. Do you have any recommendations for where to eat these?
@@ayngelina laksa is one of most popular and well known Singaporean delicacy. Go to 328 Katong Laksa 51 East Coast Rd, Joo Chiat. Joo Chiat is also a nice area to sample Nonya (Peranakan) Cuisine and to see beautiful historical Nonya architecture.
Another place I recommend is Tian Tian Chicken Rice at Maxwell Food Centre. Maxwell is close to Chinatown (another Singapore's tourist attraction). Finally try Indian Food (Biryani) at Bismillah Biryani at 50 Dunlop St (Little India)
These are just a slice of Singapore's diverse cuisine. Hope you will enjoy them
oh thank you so much!
My 3 favorite breakfasts ever...bubur ayam and nasi uduk both indonesian. And roti cenai/prata malaysia/singapore. Ofcourse i am a bit biased, but ive tried many european, middle eastern, american breakfasts.
I don't really like American/European breakfasts and often skip it but this was delicious. I also love soup for breakfast. I didn't show it here but soto ayam for breakfast is also delicious.
Suka means like, but "suka-suka" doesn't mean like-like, it means "whatever you want/like"
anyway, it's a wonderful video, me likey 😁
Oh thanks so much. I am going to remember this.
Once I watched you in Mississauga, then I kept watching when you were in Jakarta. I long for Ketoepat Sayur! I am in Waterloo, Canada. Going to sleep and would dream about Ketoepat. Next year I will be back to Jakarta. Hopefully! 😊
Oh wow there are so many great foods here in Indonesia. I will share as much as I can with you until you can return here
You nailed every food that Indonesians always have when they have for breakfast. Just missed mie ayam or bakmi or mi pangsit (as called my place) and every food that smothered With peanut sauce (gado-gado, pecal, ketoprak etc)
You're right I need to have a part two to this video 😊
And now im new subscriber you👍👍,,,im indonesian
Thank you so much for subscribing
Stumbled on your video on recommendation. Hey, I like when someone from overseas contacts a local when making video of trying the local food. Our foods really have a whole lots variety. You even eat anything that usually put offing for foreigner (western specially). You’re right of the batch when you said this is the best breakfast, yes it is. My fav is bubur, nasi kuning, nasi uduk and noodle. Typical Indonesian breakfast. Hey, try nasi uduk (also known in Malaysia or Singapure as nasi lemak) but personally ours is better. (Don’t come for me, nasi lemak fans😂)
Hahahaha I am not a typical foreigner. If the animal is not endangered I will try it! The only food I don't like so far is cendol, too sweet!
@@ayngelina ahaha if it is too sweet for you, you can ask the seller to half the sugar. I usually ask it that way. 👍
Makanan yang mengandung santan memang sangat nagih bnget bunda di lidah
Ya saya pikir Anda benar
Wow very surprised with the contents..i think your friend really know the best food in Jakarta..more videos with him as a tour guide pls
Aloy knows the best places. I am very lucky.
@@ayngelina yes those are not the mainstream place local guide brings foreignors for culinary experiences such as sabang street which for me some are very overated
I have been really careful at choosing guides. I have some great ones coming up in Sumatra
I love how you really enjoy food and life. And it makes you look so happy haha
I love discovering new foods
Mine will be lontong sayur all the time..or lontong medan, which almost the same but a little different because lontong medan will have a little rice noodles, a spring of ancovies and the things that make it really different is tauco. BTW in this video, I was distracting by the hair style of the server in your back. Really cool.
Wait which server ? I had ketoprak this morning in Padang with the rice noodles and lontong
@@ayngelina the red t-shirt guy. The one who give you the sambal. I wonder how long he didn't cut it. If I am not mistaken, ketoprak have to be included in Jakarta breakfast, as it comes from Betawi. But the one that I mentioned is not like that. You can think of lontong medan as lontong sayur with different toppings lol while ketoprak is similar to gado-gado with different toppings.
I'll need a part 2 of breakfast as I also missed Nasi Uduk
welcome to indonesia ay
Thank you 🙏 any foods you recommend trying?
I think # 2 looked the most interesting to try but all the food had me interested except maybe one, any idea?
The brain is sooooo good!
Thanks for exploring our food..i really like to see you, visiting Gorontalo and taste a food here.
Thank you 🙏 where is that in Indonesia ?
@@ayngelina yes, Indonesia, at the NORTH OF SULAWESI..You can search it in maps..
Oh I really want to go to Sulawasi
Welcome and enjoy your stay!
Thank you for the warm welcome! 😃
My be u can try legendary nasi goreng kambing in kebon sirih jakarta ..
I love Kambing, is the name of the restaurant Kebon Sirih?
You should my favourite local burger Belly bandit at Menteng, nasi uduk Gondangdia station they open near 5 pm, bakmi Roxy at Cikini raya street, bubur ayam Cikini, i love to get coffee at Jakarta coffee house with diversity coffee of Indonesia, you should try authentic Padang food "Sederhana" near pasar jaya Rawamangun east Jakarta, or kapau at Kramat raya street central jakarta
I’m heading to Padang!
On the back of a motorcycle in THAT pandemonium? You go girl. Andreas will have to step up his game when you return. 🤣Sorry, but I prefer brains between my ears.
The only way to get around Jakarta is on a bike. Cars take twice as long. And have you tried brain before. I promise it doesn’t taste weird.
There are two more most favorite dish in Jakarta, Nasi Uduk and Ketoprak. Maybe you can make part two... 😁
Well I do love nasi uduk so it's a great reason to eat it again 😂
Usually, crispy fried beef brain is more delicious if you add a more extraordinary tomato sauce.. or beef brain is made with curry with thick coconut milk... really delicious...
What is this called? I will look for it?
@@ayngelina the name is GULAI OTAK SAPI in the Padang restaurant, there are many...
And I'm in Padang now so I will look for it 😎
Tips: If the Sambal is blood-red, it’s usually not spicy, but if it’s orange-red, it’s always spicy. 😊
Oh this is so helpful!
@@ayngelina yeah, it’s due to the different “lombok/cabe” used. Red chilis are usually not so spicy. It’s the small green and orange ones are spicy. Also Red Sambal usually means they use the large chili that’s not spicy, but gives the Sambal that Bitter/Umami taste.
The small a green ones are killer 🥵
We have followed your video's throughout Ecuador, and you always mentioned how much meals cost. Is there a reason you did not mentions prices for meals in this video?
Only that I forgot to say but in future videos I try to do a better job of remembering and put the USD equivalent. Each dish was well under 10
nice ketupat sayur!
sooo good!
You must try pempek,. Delicious
Where do I try this?
nice 👍😂👍so very enjoy miss 👍👍😀
Thank you!
The best thing about food in Indonesia is, the taste can be differ from one city to the other. depend on how they cook it on their area or city. The bubur ayam also many variant, cianjur, bandung, or even samarinda east borneo. The ketoepat variant also differ from sumatera area, in Medan north sumatera, they call it lontong sayur. BTW.. MANTAP...!
So far my favourite is still in Jakarta
Dia lancar berbahasa Indonesia & udah lama tinggal di Indonesia kayaknya. So, doski udah tahu itu.
It appears that this is premiering Friday, September 23rd, are you changing the release dates?
Yes dates will shift a bit here as CZcams tells me when the best time to post will be.
You really good, as foreign not picky about food and at your background video is amazing there's predator and cute little k1d 😂 sorry if my English bad 👍
Your English is very good. It is much better than my bahasa
That krupuk behind you screams "dip me to kuah ketupat and try me"
Hahahaha ha yes
Here watching from Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Oh wow so far from here. Thank you!
Love ketupat! I'm vegetarian, so that would be my choice along with the tofu in coconut gravy.
How about gado gado?
@@ayngelina Yes! Love gadot gado. But I like spicy (not too spicy), and Indonesian food really does taste better with some heat. 🌶
Agreed!
The ketupat sayur is also known as lontong in Malaysia. The bubur ayam is indeed on the next level!
Oh interesting. I’m hoping to go to Malaysia in early 2023 so I’ll look out for this.
ak jadi luwe neh
Selamat datang di Indonesia
Makasih 🙏
If I may correct the pronunciation of Ketoepat: Kha Too Pat ( the closest sounding)
Thank you, I do appreciate the correction as I learn.
@@ayngelina You are welcome. I hope you enjoy Jakarta and many other cities in Indonesia. If you have time, I would recommend venturing to different cities like Bogor, Bandung, Yogjakarta and many other cities. Each offers slightly different kind of foods, and they are all delicious. Just make sure to visit well known places. If you are an adventurist, of course you can try totally random warungs.
I spent 7 weeks in West Sumatra but I'll be back in January and plan to visit other areas now.
I am from indonesia.delicius food i like it..yunmy

thank you for video, can I write link in comments to channel of young youtube blogger, she make video about different dishes?
Yes please do!
Ketupat sayur / lontong sayur.. 😂👍👍
This is your favourite?
@@ayngelina esperando entonces tus siguientes videos!
you can take a cup of milk when you eat spicy food.. it can help

The most delicious is road side
@@ayngelina yes, I really agree, it's cheaper and the taste is no less delicious than the one in the restaurant
bubur ayam with peanut sambal is made in heaven
Agreed!
I love Jakarta!
It’s such a good city for food.
Bubur ayam, my favorite wholesome breakfast.
It's my favourite too!
I love bubur ayam. But I think you should try nasi uduk. In Jakarta, nasi uduk is one of the famous breakfast.

After u eat Indonesian Spicy / really spicy food
Better drink Coconut Water

I wish I had known this! I have an upcoming video where I had East Javanese food. I didn't know it was spicier so I asked for medium. But medium for East Javanese is so HOT! I was sweating during the entire video.
Little chicken's leg on it actually from rooster parts
It tastes delicious 😋
Ketupat sayur lebih enak pakai kerupuk
saya setuju!
The New Andres
I could never replace him. But I did learn from him that I need a guide so in each city you Kai see someone new 😉
Actually, there are two teams of Bubur Ayam People here in Indonesia :
1. Team of Mixed Bubur Ayam (team bubur ayam diaduk), and
2. Team of unmixed Bubur Ayam (team bubur ayam gak diaduk)....
You may ask us.. but Im definetly "team Bubur Ayam diaduk"
#itsforfun😁😄
I am still undecided!
Ya, Pedas itu tergantung selera.
apakah kamu suka pedas?
Bubur ayam the best
