  • In 2013 this was Phil's first ever drive of the still to be completed DW86. It has a basic start map, so doesn't idle & the throttle map is completely messed up, but we've not seen a silly smile on his face like this since the DWS15 first moved. WHAT A NOISE! This car is set to be something really special! Love it!
    Thanks to Dynotorque, Sky Insurance, Jenvey and Samco!

    Check out the ridiculousness of the completed car here czcams.com/video/vz5cNXqosNc/video.html & The Build Thread for the car here www.driftworks.com/dw86.
    It's pretty hilarious that this car was completed in 2013 and yet we're still getting comments on this video advising us what's wrong with the car, and how to drive? - IT'S NOT MAPPED SO WON'T IDLE & IF YOU TRY TO HOLD ANY CONSTANT THROTTLE IT HITS THE LIMITER OR STALLS. THAT IS WHY IT'S BEING REVVED!... Haha!

    Something you all have to consider is that many many many hachirokus have been DECIMATED by stupid driftos that pick them up, unceremoniously strip the interiors, put junkyard tires on the back, weld the diff and then abuse them for a week before crashing them and going to claim their next victim. Seeing a build like this is out of the ordinary, but overall it is a good thing! This 8-6 was lucky enough to be picked up by a professional shop and be gifted a unique drivetrain and personality, and I'd much rather she become a V8-6 (Get it?) than be scrap because some acne-ridden, prepubescent car-rapist stuffed it into a tree while pretending to be Takumi Fujiwara.

    • @TheWierdFish
      @TheWierdFish Před 10 lety +10

      Pacman OneHitta Because there are no more AE86s being produced, and every one that is cut up and turned into a noisy (and so far self defeating) V8 pile of nutjobbery, is another 86 that cannot be enjoyed in its pure and original form. And, it bumps up the price of those that are left, meaning the rest of us have less of a chance.
      And, if they had all the time and money, they could've crammed all the power they wanted out of the original engine, or any other, rather than going down the 'cheap and cheerful (read: shite)' V8 route.

    • @jvracingvids6529
      @jvracingvids6529 Před 10 lety +2

      you can never go wrong with a v8 buddy, if you dont like noisy you dont like race cars, these guys drift for a living ofcourse theyre gonna modify it out with a better engine (v8), those parts on that motor arent cheap either sonny, if you want a stock 86 find one in a junk yard and try to find all oem parts for it, this one was made for racing, thats what you dont get, this car will probably win a championship for driftworks in the future, you can get tons of more power out of a v8 as well.

    • @TheWierdFish
      @TheWierdFish Před 10 lety +8

      Pacman OneHitta You can _always_ go wrong with a V8.
      I've had a few now. The one in my Land Rover was hoiked out in favour of a 2.5 litre 5 pot diesel, because I get nearly as much power, for a LOT less fuel consumption.
      The one in my Corvette is now supporting my coffee table, because it was one of the most unreliable heaps of crap I've ever had the mispleasure of owning. The Ford lump that was in the Mk2 I rescued is now serving as a door stop in a barn in Sweden, and the gent who now owns the car has a smoother, more powerful, more economical engine to put in its place. An original Jaguar straight six!
      You CANNOT find an 86 in a 'junk yard'. These cars rarely if ever get scrapped, and those that do, are write offs. Illegal for use on the road due to critical structural damage. Those that are still legal, are almost never scrapped, rather they'll be broken for parts, or sold on and repaired. It's very difficult to get hold of one for sensible money.
      You CANNOT get 'tons more power' out of a V8. It's physically impossible due to the design of the crossplane V8 (which is what we're talking about, not the Ferrari style flatplane). The firing order is all wrong, for a start, which saps power by affecting the exhaust pulses and how they in turn affect firing, which makes the power. The crank itself needs _huge_ counterweights to balance it, which means it's heavy. Heavy means slow response and an inability to rev (compared to an equivalent I6 or V12 or what have you)
      Then there's the noise. That's all it is, noise. I don't mind loud cars. That's why I run straight bypass pipes on my daily car, run a track car with completely unsilenced side pipes (big bore, of course) and a veritable howitzer of an exhaust on my drift car. But all of them, (V12, I6 and I4 respectively) make _good_ noises. No big V8 has ever made a noise to compare to a decent 4 pot, let alone the bark of a six or feral howl of a V12 on song.
      And seriously, power will never be an issue. I just watched a video about a reliable 900hp Evo. That's a 2 litre I4.
      I've seen 3000hp Supras.
      I've driven a 1200hp V12 TVR.
      V8s... not so much.
      My experience of LS engines is that they're crap. 4A-GEs however... Mmm. Good little fizz boxes.

    • @jvracingvids6529
      @jvracingvids6529 Před 10 lety +2

      if you know what your doing with a v8 then no it wont go wrong, the sound of a f1 car flying by is amazing, or a drag car going 220 on thw 1/4 is better than any i4 i6 or v6, ive seen 3000hp twin turbo v8s, 71 stang, runs 220 + on the 1/4.

      Carl Taylor GASP!! BLASPHEMY!! BLASPHEMY I SAY!!!
      Anyway to answer your question the reason why the AE86 is loved so much is because of how fun it is when in stock or near stock form. Toyota had created a machine that anyone, no matter the age, could have fun in and enjoy driving over and over again. The chemistry of Toyota's then advanced 1.6 litre engine paired with such a light body and lack of aids could only be explained through smiles, laughs and overall good vibes.
      By putting a V8 in the 86 it loses this special chemistry and just becomes another mean machine to add to the list of souped up GTRs, Supras, 240s etc, no longer the car it is known for.

    • @14ccs
      @14ccs Před 9 lety +3

      InitialDreamer No people loved the AE86 because it was on Initial D. It's a cool car with some history. But i imagine there is a lot of other cars that are much more fun to drive. I'd rather have a Chevy vega then that.

    • @koopatroopa187
      @koopatroopa187 Před 9 lety

      InitialDreamer There's much better cars out there than the AE86 Corollas. The Corollas weighed quite a bit for a car their size, made shit for power, and their suspension set up sucked ass. The only people who actually care about AE86 Corollas are fanboys, and nostalgic old people. Want a light weight and good handling Japanese car? Then buy a Miata or a MR2 Spyder. Both of those cars weigh less, have better handling, and make more power. Hell, my 550cc Suzuki Alto Works was faster in the turns than a couple dudes who showed up with some AE86 Corollas.

      @TheHondaTuner Před 10 lety +1

      5.3 lighter then a rotary? WTF are u talking about Oo. And its not more reliable then the 1.6 AE86 engine, and i guess its needs the same fuel then a rotary..

    • @drvn1
      @drvn1 Před 10 lety +2

      Not more reliable ? The 4,8 LS motor is a 6 bolt main motor that has one of the best rod angles of any motor. Hot Rod magazine tested one and made 1200 HP on STOCK internals and made 30+ dyno pulls.. No 1.6 or 2rotor is going to do that on completey stock internals.. Plus the 4.8 is only around 357lbs. This is the new hot motor to swap into cars as they can be had complete for around $500. Also you can get second hand parts for them to make them scream such as an LS6 Cam, LS7 lifters and the stock intake is plenty good as is.. Friend of mine has one with a 200R4 auto trans with stock bottom end that runs 8 sec 1/4 and gets 28 MPG.. all in a 280 Z

    • @adzipayichunav3432
      @adzipayichunav3432 Před 10 lety +3

      It's not ruined, it's been rebuilt from the ground up to support a much more powerful engine. This thing will be a fucking beast when it's finished and no stock AE86 will be able to hold a candle to it. Don't get me wrong, I love the stock AE86. It's a great little car with very impressive cornering capabilities. But that doesn't mean I'm going to hate on someone for rebuilding their AE86 to be a muscle car. I personally think that's pretty fucking awesome. Why do you import guys have to be such snobs all the time

    Holy shit, that throttle response is awesome. How light a flywheel did you put on it? How's the ITB tuning going? I'm getting ready to build my first LS, but I'm afraid to go ITB because of how rapidly they gain vacuum. Did you have to put pin-holes in the throttle plates, or did you set a minimum throttle position?

    Looking for honest answer. Those pipe things on top, is that like the intake and exhaust? Like a carburetor? Air goes in one side, and exhaust goes out the other? whats the advantage of running them open like that, I thought an engine needed backpressure to work its best. Plus, couldn't debris get sucked up in there and straight into the engine? Sounds amazing tho...

    Awesome, thanks! Yeah i guess there are 8 and it is a V8 so that makes sense. Headers must be below, out of sight and in tact, so i guess back-pressure is not a problem. Thanks for the clarification man!
