  • A recent online article accused JEB Stuart's vanity of causing the Gettysburg Campaign. In this video, I defend JEB Stuart's Grand Review of his cavalry.

      Stuart was all about maximizing Esprit de Corps and this grand review was probably a good way to do this.While he has been criticized for this,his cavalry performed admirably the next day at Brandy Station and forced the Union cavalry and infantry support to retreat.

    great video, I have always thought that the Union cavalry had a lot to do with Stuart's actions during that campaign

      When they say Gettysburg was the last invasion of the North here comes Jubal Early towards Washington DC.

    I am amused that everyone wants to pin Gettysburg on one person or event. There were a lot of could have, would have, should haves at Gettysburg for both sides. Any combination of which could have decided the battle. However, I think the North’s superior numbers, logistics, terrain eventually won the day. Too many advantages to overcome. Great article by the way.

      Lee wasn't at his physical best during the Gettysburg battle. Due to having a heart issue recently enough to count. It is common for people who have had a recent heart issue.to have temporary mental changes. Including less than stellar judgement calls. Lee was very likely not at his mental best at the time because of the heart issue. the way he planned and issued his battle plans to his officers.seems to suggest that. Without those issues affecting Lee.at the the time of Gettysburg. I believe several things would of went better for the south. And I always wondered if Lee couldn't of used other Calvary units to gather intelligence as well. Stuart also was in a spot.cause of circumstances. that he had encountered along the way to Gettysburg.so it could be argued that no matter what choices he made.some important tactical sacrifice would be made.

    Most certainly a provocative title for the article, bordering or maybe corresponding to the letter of what in other instances is called clickbait, maybe the finality of the article is worth praising but the sleight of hand applied between headline and content does no good to the final objective the author might had in mind. There are plenty of reason to criticize Stuart, his ego, the petty way he feuded and caused two capable officers to be sacked from the Army of Northern Virginia and others, but this particular one ain't one of them.

    • @JohnRawlins21
      @JohnRawlins21 Před 6 měsíci

      Completely agree and clickbait was my initial thought.
      Sloppy also comes to mind because Lee met with Davis after Chancellorsville and expressly proposed what would become the Gettysburg Campaign.
      And we cannot forget that by this point, Grant had boxed Pemberton in at Vicksburg. So an invasion of the North would be a way to balance out the impending and catastrophic defeat of the Confederacy’s nailhead.

    I think it was a coincidence of timing that the Gettysburg engagement started the next day, thanks for bringing this to us professor, I was unaware that this event happened.

    The cover of the Stuart biography "Year of Glory" has a great painting of that review on its cover. I think by Don Troiani.

    Dr. Lee: I agree with your analysis 100%. The invasion into Pennsylvania and ultimately the battle of Gettysburg didn’t happen haphazardly or on a whim of Robert E. Lee. Between 14 and 17 May 1864, Lee met with Jefferson Davis and the CSA cabinet in Richmond to discuss and get finial permission for his proposed operation. If anything “sparked” Lee’s invasion of Pennsylvania it was the confederate success at Chancellorsville. The Gettysburg campaign was “ sold” in May 1864 as a campaign to deliver a decisive follow up victory to Chancellorsville. Respectfully, W.S.

    • @JohnRawlins21
      @JohnRawlins21 Před 6 měsíci

      Agree.
      And I will add that Grant was on the verge of a stunning strategic victory at Vicksburg, having just won at Champion Hill on May 16th.
      Time was not on the Confederacy’s side. Closing Vicksburg and the supplies from the Trans-MS would severely impact the CSA’s Army of TN and Army of No. VA. Lee and Davis (whose home just south of Vicksburg had been lost) clearly knew this.

    • @mikechampion1614
      @mikechampion1614 Před 3 měsíci

      I believe one thing that motivated. the push was need for some simple but much needed supplies.like the the need for shoes for the army. Iack of footwear.becaus of multiple factors.was common for the Confederate army.

    Is it true that Jeb's calvary captured a large union supply train complete with horses, wagons, and other goodies own the way to Gettysburg? This would have slowed him down plus the grand review would be a good way to find out what fighting condition his force was in prior to a campaign.

    Was this the first review in which Gen. Lee did not attend. The other review is why he is criticized. Even Gen. Grumble Jones pointed out that.

    I am German Translatet with deepl At that time Kavalrie was only still active in reconnaissance I think Mr. Stuart was not aware of this. If it is true that the great General Lee was looking for Stuart on the first day of the battle, then General Stuart lost contact with Lee's army. Were the beautiful women described by Hook's soldier to blame?

    Stuart’s grand review on June 5 may not have caused the Gettysburg campaign, but his decision to pursue the Union cavalry for glory left the rest of the Army of Northern Virginia blind going into the battle itself and cost them dearly.

    • @mikechampion1614
      @mikechampion1614 Před 3 měsíci

      I don't believe it was ego that motivated Stuart.and that there was a practical reason for his choice of actions. I think He believe it was a tactical decision.ment to divert other threats to Lee's Army.
