I am loving the Longstreet series. Great example of how egos enter in to it. Also a good example of the “fog of war”. So much uncertainty in this battle. In my opinion Longstreet and Lee could have done better. However, the Union had a big advantage in soldiers, supplies and position. I don’t see the outcome being much different. I always liked Pickets reply as to why they lost. “The union army may have had something to do with it”. Keep up the good work.
For any of you interested in learning more about Longstreet’s actions at Gettysburg, I highly recommend Cory Pfarr’s two books on this subject: “Longstreet at Gettysburg” and “Righting the Longstreet Record.” Aloha 🤙🏼
Thanks for all the great videos! I have been bingeing on them the last few days. This is an excellent channel, and I love the presentation style. Hancock and the 2nd Corps is my favorite Federal unit, and Longstreet and the 1st Corps my favorite Confederate Corps. After reading as much as I can find about both men, I believe I share many personality traits with Longstreet. Only my occasional bursts of profanity link me to Hancock LOL. Like many here, I did quite a bit of reenacting back in the early 2000s, just to get a very small taste of 19th Century soldier life. I'm sure I'd have done well under Longstreet or Hancock. However, I'd have never survived Gen. Jackson's fast marches.
If you find yourself in Knoxville this coming weekend we are having our SCV picnic at Bleak House. You’re more than welcome to come and take a look at Longstreet’s headquarters. We’ll even take a walk up to the tower where General Sanders was shot from.
Lee’s successes and failures were and are fully justified on the 1st and 2nd for numerous reasons. But even with the 20/20 benefit of hindsight, every way I study it, I am more and more convinced that on the 3rd the plainly foreseeable mistake (charging the center) was entirely Lee’s; had he taken Longstreet’s morning advice to move to the right this would have won the day.
Longstreet was a great on defense.while Jackson excelled on offense.tactics. they complimented each other's strength. Lee was recovering from a heart attack So he was not at his best. Without Jackson in the mix.the confederate's had lost what would of given them a better chance of successful.
As great as Lee was at times, he has to accept the responsibility for failure. Maybe Longstreet could have beeen more forceful in his objections but he was the perfect soldier following his superior's orders.
“His blood was up” A. Powell Hill and Longstreet hated each other. D. Harvey Hill would have insured Perry, Posey and Mahone follow Wright and Wilcox to Cemetery Ridge. Lee warned them not to start a fight until he was ready. Once it started he was ready, obviously.
Great video, great video thank you. However, a lot of this is based off longstreet’s version of events written after the war. He seems to me to be the type of person willing to sacrifice the truth to make it look like it was all Lee’s fault not his. He became friends with Sickels after the war, that should tell you everything about you need to know about him.

what really puzzles me is that with the memory of the union debacle at Maryes Heights so fresh, Lee could have been so fixated on a frontal assault on Cemetary Ridge. I just dont get it - it seems so out of character. This is not the Lee we see at Chancellorsville.
So you just repeat others saying I think he thought this , I think he thought that. So much new evidence available about this battle and yet you just rehash old myths.

You need to think things through. There has never been a single nation is history which rose to great power status without a strong central government. The Confederates attempted to do so and failed miserably. Read about the period and learn about how Davis fought two conflicts- one against the United States and the other against small- minded state governors who horded precious men and supplies because they couldn't or wouldn't see the bigger picture, because they disliked Davis, or simply because they could. Read more and learn about how the Confederate States government- which had no army, no navy, no general staff, no industrial base to produce the arms and equipment, and no allies- stupidly initiated a war which they were completely unprepared for- and over land which they had never owned and had no legal claim to. Add to that the fact that they enslaved other human beings and that they believed that U.S. troops would prove unable to withstand the summer heat of the deep south. And you wished that these people would have won the war? Give your brain a chance.
The 3 greatest men and best generals the south ever produced. Lee, Longstreet and Jackson. 3 brilliant minds that give you a different answer for every question. Better together than any one could be apart. God bless them and God bless Dixie

Wasn't expecting this to happen. But ok. Impressive as always, HHWT.
VERY powerful presentation. Was nothing but waste. Longstreet knew it. Yet he fought on. So very sad.

"...if they are there tomorrow. they want you to attack."
I don't want to make this charge I don't see how it can succeed I wouldn't make it now but General Lee expects and demands it

Despite the allegations and criticism of Longstreet's mood - when the fighting started he was right in the thick of things

Stonewall Jackson death was a dagger to the heart of Confederate morale
It was clear that Lee would not be the general who would win the war, the American Confederacy should have put another general in his place.
Lee won a lot of games at home but couldn't get it done on the road in the playoffs
Or "complemented"?
My favorite Southern general. A postwar friend of Grant.
