- Another day, another Overground Line. This is a brief History of the North London Line (NLL). From the early beginnings of the line to Woolwich to being used by the London Overground. It is now a critical route for North London.

The best overground line, my parents always tell me how back in the day they used to call it the magic train or something like that because not many people knew about it as it was not on the tube map and everyone would freeload on it anyway.
Although I can't remember between which years, it *did* appear on the Tube map for a good while, appearing as white with black outlines. It was the route from Broad Street to Richmond, before reversion to North Woolwich.
Excellent piece, packing in a lot of information. I confess I've never really got to grips with the NLL's full history, so this this does the job clearly and concisely. I remember travelling on it way back in the mid to late 1970s... in its "urban backwater" days!
A brilliant explanation of a complex subject....thanks. 👏
Ayyyy, you're back with another lovely video!
That's a very impressive piece of work Ashley. Easily the best explanation I have seen on the NLL.
Thanks for the detailed video, used to be very familiar with the NLL back in the day. My Grandfather was a Railway policeman based at Broad St between 1920 & 1951 and my Father was a signalman who worked most of the boxes between Dalston Junction and Camden Road between 1950 & 1985. In the 70's I regularly caught the Watford train at Highbury to Stonebridge Park, for the return journey I would usually have to change at Willesden Junction.
Wow, what an excellent video. It's really a pleasure to watch your videos and learn a lot of history through a clear explanation and stunning graphics
The north london line north woolwich - Richmond started as a through route in 1985 when the line was electrified and services diverted away from broad street which closed in 1986
Love just watching the graphics, even if I struggle to keep up with all the London rail lines 😄
Absolutely fascinating, thanks for all your work!
Excellent work & well researched and presented Ashley
Another brilliant quality video. Thank you so much
Really thorough and enjoyable video! Thanks for sharing.
Excellent use of maps and graphics to explain what happened. Well done!
Excellent presentation and explanation - love travelling this line from Stratford to Camden
Brilliant video, really enjoyable. It’s on my to do list this year to go from Stratford to Richmond.
I used to use this train to go to the dentist in Finchley Frognal and Stella Mann ballet school in the '70' s.
Great research and very clear and informative graphics. Well done 👍
Good piece. Well done.
Very well explained!👍Thanks.
Brilliant, you have excelled yourself with this presentation. You have set yourself a high target going forward :)
Maybe TfL, London Overground and Network Rail could reopen Primrose Hill station and to allow London Overground to operate the new Stratford-Watford Junction via Willesden Junction (low level) service. With using Class 378 and Class 710 dual voltage trains and changing voltage at Primrose Hill.

The section between Victoria park and bow was not replaced by the A12 or A102 as it was before being renumbered, the road was built roughly alongside. A large metal bridge was built for the road to pass under the railway at hackney wick. This section of line was closed a few years later and parts of the trackbed have been built upon.
You’ve done a great job of the research, and of the presentation. I regarded the line as a rather slow alternative to the underground and used by those in the know. You certainly got a different view of London from the carriage window!
Been waiting fir this fir ages.....YES!!
Superb. Excellent animation.
I’m not going to lie, I was planning to sneak into the abandoned north wool in station but I don’t really want a criminal record lol
There used to be a great museum there after it closed
Great Video Ashley
Love it ! There could be been room for the old oak comman changes and the proposed maiden lane station but overall good video and love the new animation
Very interesting video. Thank you.
I remember going from North Woolwich before it closed in 2006
Very clear, good job
so cool!
Really interesting. I remember reading an article on the Richmond Broad Street line in the 1980s. It was really run down and hardly used.
Great video, your use of animation is very helpful. Silverlink wasn't the start of the Richmond to North Woolwich route, which started in 1985 when Broad Street station and the line to Dalston Junction was closed, and Richmond to Broad Street services were diverted to North Woolwich instead, with that section now electrified. The service was pretty poor before TfL took it over, shorter trains and lower frequency.
1985 was when the electric service started, for a few years prior to that a 2 car diesel service ran between Camden road and North Woolwich.
Actually Broad Street was closed in 1986 but the services were cut back the year before
I remember travelling when it was Silverlink. I don't think they ever cleaned the trains in those days! And they'd get cancelled without notice.
Nice animations !
Great video, as always! Though I think the London Overground should be broken up into individual lines on the Tube Map. I'm thinking:
-The North London Line (Richmond/Clapham Junction to Stratford)
-The South London Line (Clapham Junction/Battersea Park to Highbury and Islington)
-The Goblin Line (Gospel Oak to Barking)
-The remaining North/South Overground Lines could then be incorporated into new Crossrail Projects to give London a proper RER / S-Bhan style railway.
@Deesar Thafaks install a flyover east of Romford and add it to the Elizabeth Line. Saves having to change trains
Hi Mr Rabot I was wondering & hoping you could do a history of the Docklands Light Railway for your next series as I used this service regularly for work and leisure thank you.
8:11 Crossrail has two routes to Liverpool - a new tunnel from Stratford from Pudding Mill Lane (hence the station/track move) which continues through the Central London route and along the current Greater Anglia tracks to terminate at Stratford. It does not go via Bow Road as your map suggests.
North London Line between Richmond & Stratford was marked out on Tube maps in early 80's , operated by BR but travel passes were accepted ;
Interesting.
There is still (I think) a link between Canonbury and Finsbury Park; back in the 2970s there used to be commuter trains from Broad Street using this; now it's presumably for freight; passengers can transfer at Highbury & Islington to connect between the North London and Great Northern lines.
sorry 1970s (!)
Can you make a video on the Windsor Link Railway
Good route and service, but the trains used on the London Overground have absolutely diabolical seating! I’d honestly rather have a pacer than one of those hideous units!
Liverpool mainline Station lol, and sleepers never ran from kings Cross. Brill video :-)
I am sure they did in BR days
@@andrewcranston7790 possibly
Back in the 1960s, living in the Richmond area, I remember we always used to call it the Broad Street Line. Were we wrong, or was that the correct name?
I ride the NLL almost everyday. Hampstead Heath to Gunnersbury for Chiswick or Ken Olympia for Ken High Street. Some people I hear call it the Overground, but they have no sense of history.
im pretty sure the sght of north woolwich station is albert road
Does TfL ever run Overground trains that go the full loop?
If not, they should IMO. Maybe once a week, first thing on sundays? :)
No, no they do not.
The track layout at Highbury & Islington/Canonbury/Dalston doesn't actually allow through running from the North London Line to the East London Line.
1:36 Silvertown will not reopen in 2022, it is passive provisioned but will not reopen. Also Stratford High Street closed much earlier than 2006
The clip of fright train made me LOL as its USA twin stack wagon's which would wip out 90% of the rout A good video and not to be over critical I would say Network south east founded the rout as the NNL before that it was very much a back walter of the london network the 313 emu help't as did getting the line on maps as london conections map
Efforts at branding it as the North London Line and encouraging usage as an alternative to going in and out of central London began way before NSE. For example here's a poster from 1972. www.flickr.com/photos/21602076@N05/50023290576/in/dateposted/
@@andrewstevenson72 25 p WOW ! it would been cheeper to fly on concord LOL I can rember a day out in london in the 1980 could be done for £5 travil card and a Mc donalds to eat wilst train spotting
The Model railway club london has two layouts that feture the NNL one is Copenhagan fields baced to the north on kings x the other is Bow Works Bow jution look up the clubs web site
Surely it's Kensal Rise & Kensal Green not Kensel.
Your map says Silvertown Station reopening in 2022 but there's no plan for a station there
Wait what custom house railway station reopening in 2022?
I think it's for crossrail
At 3:05 I guess you meant to say "intermediate" station. ;)
0:26 The map is wrong - the NLL never curved back in on itself like it is shown in North Woolwich
Has anyone here got NIMBY Rails yet on the PC?
Was actually considering to do a video on that
@@ashleyrabot very cool, could even map the NLL.
It is good. But would be even better if part of the movie would be shot outside.
You pronounce Dalston incorrectly
