My religion is Penecostal. Next month I turn 40. I know I am not suppose to worship any other God than Jesus, but after seeing and hearing this, why does He make it sooooooo hard on us!!!! I LOVE THIS!!!!
Whatever anyone's opinion is this song by far is at least one of top 20 songs in the last 40yrs from 1972 till now whenever he perform this song the electricity is still as powerful then when he first sang it and to all music lovers appreciate the the living legend we don't have many left I myself appreciate his GREATNESS continue on SIR ELTON JOHN.
saw him in SLC a few days ago... this song was incredible. as was the whole experience. what a great talent even at 70 still playing and singing like the pro he is
Illicit Drugs will ultimately kill, but if not they will definitely destroy, I've never taken them but I am sure this was par for the course back then. Thank god Elton stopped taking them. Love your music Elton.
How this song brings me back to when i was a kid... Loved the 70ds & the 80ds best time ever to grow up still when we were able to cross into NY and drink @ 18 and jersey was 19 miss thoose days
I hope ELTON will release this full complete conert on dvd video.I still remember seeing this back in the spring/summer of 1977 on HBO cable tv when HBO use to play Rock Video Shows back in the day. Peace.
This song is actually in reference to a Ray Bradbury story. So it literally is about a man in a rocket going to Mars. But the drug metaphor works equally well, and anyone who says otherwise doesn't get rock n roll in the slightest.
which Bradbury story was that? i enjoyed Farenheit 451 (until my english teacher made us go through and identify every theme, simile, metaphor, etc. through the entire book). but i am curious as to this astronaut book
+Ben Krapf Not only the drugs, but at the time of this song he was still closeted...I never knew this was supposed to be about an astronaut...just something I jammed to. Listening to this song recently, I assumed it was about the life of a gay man stuck in a loveless marriage. "I'm not the man they think I am at home....I'm a rocket man...." the symbolism here...the song fits if you think of it as a closeted man stuck in a marriage without love...cold as hell...no place for kids...needs to stay high, though it's a lonely place...so high he misses his wife...does his duty 5 days a week..jmo...no doubt at the time it needed to be spun as a credible "this is about an astronaut" song, but knowing now what he went through, it has different flavor. QUITE BRILLIANT, ACTUALLY!
You could look at this song literally or you could read deeper into it, about a guy who leaves his humble surroundings to find his fame and fortune, become a star. And then when paired with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, where he becomes disillusioned with stardom and fame and longs for his humble roots. I guess songs mean different things to different people, but that's how I view both songs.
hah...hah...Kapiszczur is so correct.... people who don't get that this song is social commentary on the rampant drug culture of the 70's and how families were destroyed when a parent is emotionally disconnected. what makes this song a masterpiece is that it is existential. not only the narrator is pessimistic about his situation, he/she is quite okay and content with his pessimistic outcome. Not all drug addicts want to relinquish the habit; not all addicts can be saved, unfortunately.
Gary B its rock and roll.. which almost always equates to sex or drugs. Its definitely up to interpretation though. Thats what makes art great!. However I dare you to convince ANYBODY whos ever taken lsd that lucy in the sky is about anything other than lsd and they will tell you any remarks the beatles made to indicate otherwise were purely fecesious and meant to uphold an image their managers were constucting for them.
She packed my bags last night pre-flight Zero hour nine AM And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then I miss the earth so much I miss my wife It's lonely out in space On such a timeless flight And I think it's gonna be a long long time 'Till touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home Oh no no no I'm a rocket man Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone And I think it's gonna be a long long time 'Till touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home Oh no no no I'm a rocket man Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids In fact it's cold as hell And there's no one there to raise them if you did And all this science I don't understand It's just my job five days a week A rocket man, a rocket man And I think it's gonna be a long long time 'Till touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home Oh no no no I'm a rocket man Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone And I think it's gonna be a long long time 'Till touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home Oh no no no I'm a rocket man Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone And I think it's gonna be a long long time And I think it's gonna be a long long time And I think it's gonna be a long long time And I think it's gonna be a long long time And I think it's gonna be a long long time And I think it's gonna be a long long time And I think it's gonna be a long long time And I think it's gonna be a long long time
I was actually being sarcastic or a typical example of a CZcams commenter. My point is to all the potheads out there who associate everything with misconceptions about drugs. Why should everything be drug related? I clearly didn't mean anything by the virginity remark, I was just joking.
RayLH RayLH---Worried you should be. IF, your speaking of the U.S.A.? The Rebulicans obviously still have the majority of Votes. (referring to the Primaries, last night) ANYONE, who thinks OUR current president is worthy of his position. Are CRAZY!! I saw Elton John in 1986, & he was wonderful. I hope he lives well into his 100's.
It's about a man who goes up in a rocket - simple as that. Isn't that a worthy enough subject. The junkies are out in force here, trying to rake in some kind of vindication of their weakness. Sad really.
Relatively speaking it is high quality. I have a dvd of this concert and it was transferred from a 10th generation VHS tape - it looks as bad as you'd expect it to. I've never been able to locate a version as good as this video. I'd pay big money for a clean copy of the entire concert that looks as good as this clip.

Wait, please explain to me how drug use has anything to do with whether a person has had sex or not. Also, please explain how being a virgin is a bad thing. Or are you the type of person who thinks not being a virgin is cool? Because if so, that doesn't make you any better than potheads who think drug use is cool.
Not to be a jerk or anything, but he said it was about being a closeted gay. I'm sorry if I've ruined the song for you. It kind of bummed me out to find out.

A Wonderful song! Sir Elton John is a musical genius!
And I think its gonna be a long long time before I stop loving this!!!!!
The sadder time of Elton John... without the glitz but shinning light inside him. Who lived since that time til' now, could see.
Great performance of a timeless song. If someone wants to become a true artist this is what they study.
Grande ELTON JOHN, increíble versión.

It's about him being addicted to drugs, not being a family man
1977
@Lovep0cket Yeah, GAGA is hitting millions view, we should force 'em to listen to good music, like this.
Either that, or it's about turning to drugs after a marital breakdown.
hey i was born in 74 year of the tiger
i know, and they think everythings drug related. OMG THE SONG SAID HIGH SO IT MUST BE TALKING ABOUT POT!
She packed my bags last night pre-flight
Zero hour nine AM
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the earth so much I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
'Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
'Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them if you did
And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
'Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
'Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
But the bubbles get up your nose.

Should say Rocket Man / Low Quality. 240p is definitely not HQ.

Or coke. Or many others popular during the time. Probably coke. MJ has a relatively quick high. Coke endures. It's much better than Pepsi.
bass lines sound wrong important part of song those high bass notes make the song.

to bad he cant hit the high notes anymore
I prefer Stewie Griffin's version
Its so funny, my husband laughs at me cuz I cringe everytime we see Stewies version.
*****
Stewie's is really a cover of William Shatner's version
Rocknheroes Hey Nick your an idiot
Not to be a jerk or anything, but he said it was about being a closeted gay. I'm sorry if I've ruined the song for you. It kind of bummed me out to find out.
