  • As the iconic frontman of Pantera, Philip Anselmo sang on six of the Texas metal juggernaut's albums: 1988's self-released offering, 'Power Metal,' plus their five classic major-label LPs, 'Cowboys From Hell,' 'Vulgar Display of Power,' 'Far Beyond Driven,' 'The Great Southern Trendkill' and 'Reinventing the Steel.' We recently talked to Anselmo and got him to pick his five favorite Pantera songs. His choices might surprise you.

I'm so pissed for losing it, but I had a tape of Phil singing with Lillian Axe from way back in the day. It was a shitty, garage type recording before any of them did anything, but his vocals stood out over everything. Without trying to sound "funny" the dude had a beautiful voice and his range was incredible. He sang "Letters in the Rain" and "circle" something, I think....I can't remember the Lillian Axe tunes. Your comment reminded me of that. Now I'm pissed all over again.

Phil is one of the most versatile heavy metal singers of all time, a great lyric writer, an honest man, and just happened to be a key member of arguably the most innovative and powerful metal band in history. You may think people aren't talking about him, but I'm an enormous fan of the guy.

@@EvAn-tm3yb rap and pop we’re doing great too. But at this particular time, grunge was ruling the world. It had so much influence that even pop stars and rappers were wearing flannel. Lol. My point is, Metal was supposedly “dead” at this time in music. All the hair metal bands had given way to the angsty grunge kids. Even real metal bands like Slayer and Metallica were having a tough go at it. Metallica should’ve been the one to lead the metal charge. Instead, they cut their hair and started wearing makeup. They became the posers they despised. Pantera picked up the metal flag and flew it through the 90’s. When no one else had the minerals to do it. That’s all I’m saying. That’s my point. 👊🏻

@@jeffh123 don’t know what life you were living, but Pantera was packing stadiums and amphitheater’s in 94 supporting Far Beyond Driven (#1 album). Saw them in 94 in Nashville at the Starwood Amphitheater. Had backstage passes and got to party with Pantera and Prong. Yeah, Metallica prob didn’t start their full on poser look til a little later in the grunge scene. But they had laid the groundwork to pussification much earlier. Starting with the Black Album in 91. Up until that point, they were a thrash band. Not to say the Black Album was total shit, but it did disappoint a huge part of their fan base that were thrashers. But by this point, the mainstream metal community and the masses had made Metallica their own. But they were continually softening up whilst Pantera was doing the opposite. Metallica started out brutal and became posers. Pantera started out posers and became brutal. That’s why a lot of hardcore metal fans jumped on the Pantera bandwagon during the 90’s. I’m glad Metallica found their way back eventually. Everyone I knew in the 90’s loved Pantera. They were huge. To say “a lot of people didn’t know Pantera in 96” is laughable. They were at their peak. Either you’re from a small town or weren’t very engaged in the music scene back then. I guess it’s all a matter of perspective. But from where I stand, Pantera were the Kings of Metal in the 90’s. 🤘🏻

Yeah, that's what I've been noticing too. He's leaving that "uber-macho-racist" persona and reconnecting with what made him truly great. When you literally die from drugs that you get into to treat your back pain, you come back with serious trauma. No wonder those guys got progressively estranged, Phil was going through some serious internal transformations/doubts/revolts, those kinds of stuff not even you yourself understand. And now it seems like he "understands". He can speak of when he entered the band, the period in which HE STILL WORE SPANDAX and sang VERY HIGH notes, with fondness, reminisce and connect. He can speak about the lyrics on No Good and say it was "ridiculous". He sounds like a man in peace, a whole person, instead of the fractured and troubled person he ended up being in years prior. That is commendable, and makes him more likeable.

    For drawing the young
    Purity withers and dies
Never return to the ones that provided
    Children draining parents of will
I hold out my hand to bloodless child
I'm taken by the one I was saving
    From death
    By demons be driven
    Beckon the call
    With decline in mind
    End not far
    We're left hanging alone here
    He pulls us from nails
    Shatters our bones
    Leaving us crippled and strewn
Boiling my corpse in the blood of his children
Praying for his god to prevail
    Burying us with loved ones
To sleep with shelled children of the sixth dimension
    By demons be driven
    Beckon the call
Will rock my soul for eternity!!!!! Thank you so much Phil!!!!!

today was the 1st day I really listened to Pantara.....these guys are so great !!!!....Pantara absolutely kills it.....and the reason I decided to watch their videos and live songs, I had a girlfriend back in the day who loved these guys....especially the singer.....without that guy this band would not be......Phil Anselmo is hard core, pure greatness......

Saw a gig in '19, Phil let some fans in wheelchairs in between the security cordon and the stage, so they could watch the show aswell. Superhero of Metal.

They let me do that at a Corrosion of Conformity show, and a Gogol Bordello show. And I got a sweet spot on a side catwalk at this old factory for a Clutch show in Tyler, Texas last year. I'm in a wheelchair, so I'll get sweet views sometimes. At a different Clutch show in OKC this year, they put me against the rail in front of Tim the guitar player.
