A Crisis In Time.
You gotta admit that's a cool title.
It's so incredibly 90's... I LOVE IT
I love watching this years later having Sal be like "We will NEVER cover 2001 AD" and I think, huh I just watched that.
The amount of Langoliers references on this channel is astonishing.
It's by far my favorite reoccurring joke on the show
maybe we can create a niche of being the comic channel that makes a lot of Stephen King references. get busy living or get busy dying boys.
Aw, come on, guys. JSA had a good modern run. And Jay's WWI helmet is all right, it's literally Hermes' helmet.
Just how bad could a leak have been in the pre-internet day?
Turns on Back Issues, puts it on in the background
Goes back to doing work
"Hello everyone!"
Fuck
Can't do work with Back Issues. Back Issues rules all
"Which is an event we'll never talk about"
Hehe
I know you said you wouldn’t do Armageddon 2001 but im so glad you did because of how silly the story is and how much fun the episode ended up becoming.
Fax, one of the best episodes!
I don't know how you guys kept a straight face when you mentioned the cosmic treadmill.
The hawk-maphrodite line always cracks me up. 😂
Oh thank god. From the context of the story, when Sal said "And then Green Arrow grabs his bow and just breaks it against...", I thought he was gonna finish it up with "the baby." In all fairness, it's Kryptonian, so it probably could've taken it.
Lmao
Come back to this after watching Armageddon 2001 episode
Crisis On Earth One
Crisis On Earth Two
Crisis On Infinite Earths
Zero Hour: Crisis In Time
Infinite Crisis
Final Crisis
Convergence
Dark Nights: METAL
Heroes In Crisis
thanks
Sebastien-Loik Ntsangou-Kanda and Flashpoint, right?
What about identity crisis?
How is Metal classed as a crisis level event? It didn't change the timeline and it didn't destroy the multiverse. As I remember it, it was just an invasion, by the dark Batmen, on Earth 1.
@@richardnicholls8705 Reintroduced Barbatos from Bronze Age and TROBW, featured the OG Monitor, Mandraak the Dark Monitor after his defeat in FC, made Batman Who Laughs whose now got an in main universe miniseries, broke the source wall which had ramifications in The Flash and was the jumping off point for a mass amount of new villains and a new JL series...
I'd say its Crisis level, probably just scraping by
"Yeah... I'm the bad guy."
at "hawk-maphrodite" I died!
I had zero hours of sleep after watching this quite the crisis for my paper... Back issues is Totally worth it. :)
So Sal,...a thought occurred to me of how DC could EASILY reconcile Hawkman's origin...couldn't Hawkman and Hawkgirl be Thanagarians who simply appeared in ancient Egypt (and lead to the Egyptians worshiping them and imprinting them into Egyptian mythology)? And as they were dying (perhaps by some assassination attempt), they somehow cast a Thanagarian (or Eqyptian) magical ritual that enabled them to continue to reincarnate on Earth throughout history? :P Idk if that's already been thought of, but figured I throw that out there lol
+Dennis S Smith This works way better
YES! You're welcome DC! ;)
I always thought that it would be better if the ancient Egypt souls instead of going only to inhabitants of Earth also went to aliens, so the Thanagarians have Khufu and Chey-Ara's souls, making this a blend of the Golden Age origin and the Silver Age origin.
That's more or less what Geoff Johns had happening in JSA: Return of Hawkman. This was several years after Zero Hour, 2001-2002 or so.
Or carter and shayera get transformed in ancient Egypt by nth metal into super thanagarians and then get the reincarnation curse
Pretty great watching this video after the 2001 video and hear Sal say they'll never cover that book rofl
26:41 Best Ethan moment ever.
Geoff Johns's JSA series is one of the best series DC has ever put out. So it's OK if you personally don't like them Sal, but calling them lame is a bit much. They had some really great stories in the Johns run and I would highly recommend that series to anyone who wants to see the greatness that can come from superhero comics. Johns JSA>Morrison's JLA anyday. That being said, you guys did a really great job with this episode. I loved when Ethan flipped out about the velociraptors lol.
hell yeah those stories were sweeet. Johns' Green Lantern run is still the BEST :]
I love Johns JSA
What aged worse?
Sal saying "This is our last crisis"
or
Ethan's 2016 Underwood shirt
💯 Love these classic episodes
Okay I hate to be that guy, but Alan Moore didn't base Watchmen characters on the JSA. He based them on the Charleston comic heroes. So The Question became Rorschach, Blue Beetle became Nite Owl, Captain Atom became Dr Manhattan, etc. If anything, Alan Moore probably based the Minutemen characters off of the JSA.
+D.C. Stranded (Mr. Wright) I meant the Minutemen.
+D.C. Stranded (Mr. Wright)
DO you know what characters like Nite Owl I, Dollar Bill, Hooded Justice, The Comedian is based on more specific?
like I think Silk Spectre could have been based on Black Canary or Cyclone, or maybe Silhouette was based on Black Canary.
Mothman as Hawkman? Captain Metropolis as Mister Terrific?
@John Delorenzo a bit of a late reply but Mason's Nite Owl design is actually based off a childhood drawing Dave Gibbons did.
I still have my copy that I got as a teen some months after the series came out. I live in a southamerican country and this book is one of the things, besides video games, that really got me into learning English. I remember reading it with a dictionary close by just to understand what everybody was saying. Fun times.
"Hawkmaphrodite"
Still fucking kills me 5 years later, Back Issues is timeless
So does the Justice Society wake up early and hit the Countey Kitchen Buffet??
Br Ga I wonder if they get a super special discount cause their seniors, Superheroes, and war veterans.
@@notsosmartguy6254 These guys also fought in Ragnarok- I'd offer free burgers to any of my Valhallan bois!
20:52 "A lot of things happen, but nothing happens." That's the 1990s comic book industry in a nutshell right there.
This is very fun to watch after you all actually did 2001 AD last year. Never say never I guess!
9:35 he can if he has the cosmic treadmill or some shit right?
I love you Ethan
lol, i like the part where he says that they will never talk about Armageddon 2001. Hindsight is a funny thing.
may be my 10th rewatch, somehow I love it more when Sal goes BOTW and chooses a hack book, tearing apart the schlock one page at a time
every 10 should deal with Spider-Man clone saga
***** But what would be more entertaining
Please do Convergence on Back Issues I really want to see you guys wreck that book thoroughly.
I like convergence because it gave DC to tell story from pre 52. Which gave me joy
So in honor of Daredevil Season 2, I humbly request Elektra Vol 1 Bloodlines and Vol 2 Reverence. I think it's high time to show some female comic book bad asses some love, boys. ^-^
I know you guys must get a lot of fan requests, but I think an Astro City back issues series would be cool (an episode per 2-3 volumes, perhaps, they're not that long.) I think you guys would all appreciate it's portrayal of comic book mythology after all you've been through. :) And it's got some really cool stories, too.
And thus began the we need a crisis mentality at DC.
Bravo, best freaking show on YT. Thankx.
8:13 still one of the funniest jokes.
Crises are always Mind-blowing!
So funny 6 years later you finally do 2001A.D. ben and ethan had no recollection of this conversation haha
Since we have no more dc crises left, the next should be Secret Wars. Or maybe Back Issues will get it's own crisis.
+GuyWithAnAmazingHat there is still countdown to final crisis.
They did Secret Wars, but maybe they can do Convergence.
Oh my god Sal mentioned Hypertime please do Superboy's storyline Hypertension it's the BEST Superboy story
“Justice…fuckin…society..” 😂😂😂
Thanks for the amazing video. This is one of the only channels I try to watch frequently.
At 5:56 was Sal making a quasi-Futurama reference?
"You watched it! You can't un-watch it!"
Great episode as always!
This book literally gives new meanings to Time Zones
The hype for this episode can finally be curbed. I am satisfied with life now
I never get tired of you guys.👌
I know this has nothing to do with the topic of the video but I was watching your Back Issues on All Star Batman and Robin and I was wondering what Frank Miller's reasoning for the Joker killing two acrobats would be. So I delved into the insane recesses of my mind to come up with fan fictiony reason why.
-Maybe the owner of Haly's Circus, fearing the Joker would attack his troop, decides to make him an offer. Mr. Haly says that he'll pay off the Joker if he doesn't attack the Circus.
-Since the Joker is a dick he not only wants Haly to pay him off, but he wants the entire troop to pay him off- for their entire stay in Gotham,"it can't be a one and done situation", Joker says.
-The Graysons refuse to pay, which emboldens the rest of the troop (as well as Mr.Haly) to defy the Joker. So Joker gets mad, and then get's Jocko-Boy to kill the Graysons.
Idk the story's booty cheeks, and my fan fic can't save it. At least the art was fantastic!!
YYERSSSSS BEEN WAITING!!
Best damn comic book-related channel!!!! 😉
u guys the best and deserve way more subs
“Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here.”
Ben said one a bunch of times at the end so next week is gonna be an Earth One or Year One book. That's how this works, right?
+Ivan Garcia It's already filmed and it's neither.
+cubencis When Sal does that, I owe a friend fifty bucks. So, noooooope lmao rofl
Great Crisis in time comic review man :)
Zero Hour is happening now-now... (thank you for posting this!)
I've actually had this comic sitting on my dresser for the past 6 months and I still haven't finished reading it...
#hawkmaphrodite
I'm convinced the only reason they did Zero Hour was that Jurgens wanted to "fix" Hawkman by making him more confusing. They also made several good comics end storylines before they were over. Valor was a fantastic book at the time, with Busiek writing and Colleen Doran doing the art, that they ended for this dumb thing before it could get a following .
Loved the Space Balls reference!
Zero Hour is the first DC story I ever read. It took me 3 months to finish and I hated every fucking second of it.
I subscribed to DC Infinite with zero DC knowledge and the first thing that caught my eye was that awesome Green Lantern cover holding all the rings. How they fumbled such a cool story that quickly I'll never understand.
Has anyone been keeping a running tally of how many time Ethan refers to The Langoliers? Feels like an important statistic for Comic Pop lore.
Also you guys should do Infinity! You mentioned about doing it before.
Awesome
Ethans tangent on the dinosaurs is so fucking to me for some reason 😂
Green Lantern (Hal) is my favorite GL because his dynamic with Ollie and Barry. Some solid relationships other then Booster and Beetle!
thanks for the uploads Sal & company always fun to watch. Will you guys do Preacher since it's coming out on AMC in May.
Keep up the good work and good luck
At 16:11 When Sal mentions how the cartoon which is obviously Justice League had Thanagarians, but later in the finale season of Justice League Unlimited they brought in Hawkman and did the reincarnated story with him and Hawkgirl
The video was in a VHS that was given out to retailers as part of a promotional kit for the event.
wait a minute powerGirl was pregnant. Who the father and how did she get pregnant. This isn't an Avengers issue 200 thing is it ?
Hope you guys do the parralax story at some point
And in Countdown: Arena, Captain Atom is Monarch.
I've been waiting for this one! Are you going to do the Flash Crisis stories as well?
Yay! New back issues!
One of my favorite things about Zero Hour was, in Robin's comic, Robin!Dick shows up and confuses the fuck out of Tim!Robin, but then they're just kinda "fuck it" and fight crime until Zero Hour apparently ends and Robin!Dick disappears like what the fuck?? I had no context for that shit it was hilarious it had nothing to do with anything
Now that you guys did every crisis, you have to have another special thing every 10 episodes. Maybe Spiderman or Spawn volumes? (also you should do convergence)
Since you can't do a Crisis every 10th video, you guys should do a Booster Gold book every 10th.
FINALLY. Been waiting for this one. By the way any chance you'll do superman earth one vol 2???
speaking of time, don't think that underwood shirt gets worn much these days lol!
please do the darksied war
Omf. I'm dying during the Kyle rayner fighting superman bit
You know, as I recall, a Zero Hour issue was the first event comic I ever owned. Yet I never read any of it, including that issue. But I have been reading the 90's Catwoman comics, and as I recall there was something of a soft reboot after Zero Hour in it. So I was expecting this to be some big status quo changing event. Yet... nothing happened. At least in the event itself. The whole thing feels pointless, but I also kind of want to read it now, as I always assumed Parallax was just Hal but evil, but from this review, he genuinely feels more sympathetic then the "heroes", and I'd have much rather he won.
Also, there was a sabertooth cat in Catwoman's series during the events of Zero Hour.
Troublesome Zorua Zero Hour was my first comic ever. I was very confused...
Hawkmaphrodite might be my new favorite thing I've heard on this channel
I remember reading this as a kid and being like "... What the %$@# did I just read?"
I have issues zero of this that I found in a back issue bin, having no idea what it was, and I went to read it was so damn confused because apparently that's the last issue.
I gotta read this now
also if/when you do the book where hal jordan goes crazy and kills the corps dont spare the details, i really want to know what happens. also just throwing it out there, green lantern rebirth would be awesome to see on back issues
Will you make a playlist for all the crisises that you've covered?
Sounds like hawk is DC's Kang
i cant wait for that impulse tanget
When are we getting a 4 man back issues? You teased us when you got the couch and everyone was sitting on jt
I read this as a first time comic book reader cause I wanted to see Hal Jordan and I was beyond confused.
If, when mentioned, the second Sal appeared I would have completely lost it.
If only Eobard Thawne was the villain he is today during a story like this
Wow, this story is like a American version of Final Fantasy. But this makes somewhat more sense.
Hey Sal quick question do you know how many singles made up the trade of crisis in time?
Well this wasn't very good. Honestly they were probably asking for trouble when they decided to connect to the previous facepalm that was Armageddon 2001. Also, I looked up the tie-ins for the Zero Month after this event happened... Good God; Anima, Xenobreed, Primal Force, Gunfire, Darkstars, WTH was DC thinking?!
You can tell that legends of tomorrow was heavily inspired by this.
I'd love to see a film adaptation of darkest night to close out this batch of DC superhero movies, or kingdom come. I'd camp out starting now for kingdom come the movie :(
Reading this as a kid I was mystified by the merging of multiple Hawkmen. I guess DC got sick of the continuity nerds hounding them.
