The thing about the NHL that makes it unique compared to other sports when talking about the Yankees have to deal with tough media is that the NHL has a hard cap. The Yankees can use their financial strength to build all-star teams, even the NBA has mechanisms that allow financially strong teams to leverage that strength. In the NHL the hard cap neutralizes what should be an advantage for large market teams.

  • @dullestpenguin4151

Boys, you live in the city and are part of the media. The Toronto media hinders the team. A guy like Lebron is getting it anywhere, but decisions about who is the healthy scratch every night is newsworthy in TO. The rest of Canada feels it when watching sportscenter and we have to watch 15 minutes of Leafs nothing while there are actual things happening in sports. That has to be horrible for the average player, a lot of mid tear guys going out but rarely any jumping to sign on. You cant expect to be impartial when you are part of the thing you are defending. This O'Reilly comment is more players than I bet you think.

Watching interviews makes me reminisce of times in grade school with my friends chatting about how nervous hockey players were when interviewed. How easily Carl Brewer handled interviews while you were lucky if Keon lifted his head and Frank with a frozen grin on his face. By the time I got out of school we always talked about guys hoping they wouldn't get traded to Toronto because they hated the amount of cameras and mics that were shoved in their faces. Having to explain that bad pass, stupid giveaway or no support for the D. Now it's can't turn on TSN or SN because of a whole week discussing that players brutal play. It's gotten so bad I truly believe if they showed every players no-trade lists the Leafs would be #1 of all the teams and we celebrate when the Leafs aren't on that list

I think a good comparison for the leafs are the cowboys. They are seen as "America's team" and have an overwhelming presence in the NFL news cycle. Everything they do is under a microscope, ever sound byte is dissected, and every year their fans expect them to go to the Superbowl. That media scrutiny and the weight of fan expectations seems to weigh on the players, causes stange personnel moves, and ultimately hurts the team. Now...i think Jerry Jones is an x factor that hurts the comparison, but I absolutely think being a franchise that is the face of your sport while simultaneously having a track record of playoff failure can lead to sub par results. As a Caps fan, I think the team and players benefit from being a bit under the radar. If we had as much scrutiny as the leafs, we probably would have made reactionary moves after all those second round exits that spoiled our chances of eventually winning a cup.

For the majority of the NHL and its players, playing in the southern US basically ignored unless you win is a better fate to them than having someone with a Mikhael Grabovski profile pic on your ass for having a 49% corsi. You guys just listed the biggest athletes in the world and compared it to the Leafs, a middle of the pack team in a sport that is barely followed around the world, except in the pressure cooker that is Toronto. Wake up, and watch calling the fans stupid. Bad look from someone who is not exactly a journalist. Insulting the few people who watch your show may not be a great career choice. And the reason Rangers fans keep quite is because they arw not even a top 5 sports team in the city. Oh well, what are the Yankees doing.

I love these guys, but I hate when they talk about the media because they really sound like they are coping since they know they are part of it. Medias absolutly are part of the reasons why a canadian team has not won the cup in 30 years.
You just cant compare to other sports like they do. It's so disingenuous to do so. The reason why has nothing to do with the ABSOLUTE amount of pressure but with the RELATIVE amount of pressure. Even though medias in canada are sweet in comparison to Europe, the difference in media and fan pressure accross the different markets in the NHL is huge! Why play in Toronto or Montreal when you could for the same amount play for Nashville or Anaheim? If you have to face the medias and you dont somewhere else, you might also consider that in your contracts negociations.
