- End of Dragons (EoD) is the 3rd expansion of Guild Wars 2. After it's release in March 2022 I sunk more than 200 hours into this new GW2 expansion.
I've been playing Guild Wars 2 since its release in 2012. So, I know a thing or two. This expansion is a big deal for a lot of players. Many players expected new mounts, new maps, new masteries and much more. But was the wait worth it in the end?

Need to start an EOD leggy
i'm still pretty green to the post lvl 80 content in GW2. During the holidays, i bought a bundle on sale with all the expansions included and was wondering where to start after i reached lvl 80. I stumbled on a youtube video in which i think i heard the guy saying that it was a good idea to start the End of dragons story first because it was very approachable for newer players...but in retrospect, maybe he actually mentionned Heart of thorns and i misheard. After a few weeks of mainly focusing on the End of dragons story, i just a few days ago switched and started Path of fire instead. As a guy playing with only a raptor mount available, i totally agree with what you were saying about New Kaineng and Echovald. It's almost impossible to navigate if you don't have a flying mount and i was getting really frustrated with my lack of progression because of it. Especially New Kaineng... i was starting to hate that place despite it being really magnificent to look at.
Not impressed so far. 100% the first 2 maps so far. Did their story, metas and smaller random events. By far the weakest metas I have seen. Run around killing trash mobs with 0 challenge with a not so great boss at the end. The smaller events were not fun either. Fighting mobs, hauling cargo and fishing is what I remember.
The story is ok I guess? I never cared much about the story. I do it once and forget about it.
I don't feel like there are any big new features other than the skiff (skimmer feels a lot better on water) and fishing.
The elite spec for my main (elementalist) feels like anet laughing at me. I wanted something ranged and I get to play like a berserker swinging my hammer around. I had to switch to celestial stats so I don't get downed all the time.
I don't like how the maps seem to be designed with POF mounts in mind. HOT and POF maps did not require anything from the older content to get around. They could have made more and smaller maps with less verticality. Or they could have put a LOT more ziplines around in Kaineng. More jump pads in Seitung. I spent so much time on the bunny, especially in Kaineng.
I was into raiding a lot. The lack of a new raid really hurts. Raids seem to be an abandoned feature. Almost 4 years since wing 7. Strike missions are ok but raids were a lot more fun.
I'm not really enjoying the expansion so far. Which is a shame. I thought I would love it. HOT was incredible because of the 10/10 meta events. POF was incredible because of the mounts and open maps.
I think the maps are ok (some great, some overly and exaggeratedly designed), quests are adequate, the new jade mechanics are interesting if you do not have the skyscale (although some are kinda meh to be honest), and the freaking siege turtle is awesome. New content is challenging and rewarding, so I can't say I'm disappointed.
My biggest problem is not the story (which goes on an interesting road), but the delivery of it when it comes to dialogue. It can be described completely in a simple word: annoying. The writers went full presentism with a fictional world, characters are uninteresting to the point of being unapologetically bothersome to hear (there is a freaking californian valley girl). It's obvious fault are the script writers' lack of talent (one of them has gone on record to have stolen a line that Picard told on Star Trek, so he is quite proud of his mediocrity. I reached the point of skipping all interactive dialogue when it came to story because it feels a deep downgrade from Icebrood Saga (the best one in my opinion, followed by Heart Of Thorns. Saying this the BEST STORY of GW2 is quite the reach. Also: are you gonna say "Mai Trin did nothing wrong" with a straight face? I didn't liked Kasmeer, but now I despise her for 1 line of dialogue. And yes, that bad is that line but not gonna drop spoilers so everyone can "enjoy it".
I guess I can safely recommend the game with the caveat of "BEWARE OF UNISPIRING AND DISGUSTING DIALOGUE IN THE STORY".
About skyscale: I fear you missed a lot of fun exploration (with a plethora of unmarked beautiful views) by using the skyscale instead of eg thr zip lines. I didn't have my skyscale unlocked yet when exploring through Cantha and I never felt bad about it. Springer and zip lines were enough to get up and gliding.
Thanks for the comment! Hope this encourages players to use the ziplines more often. My point in the video is that its fun to explore at first. But if you want to return later it can become a chore. I especially felt this in Kaineng City
@@Kyosika yeah, agreed. While doing hero points for new alts I *do* use skyscale a lot, especially on Kaineng (on latter 2 maps I've mostly used griffon, though, for its speed and evasive abilities)
End of Dragons doesn't introduce any new game changing features like the previous expansions did, but what it brought to the table (maps, elite specs, strikes, story, masteries and also soundtrack!) was overall well executed and in many cases another step up in quality. The formula of turning story encounters into strike missions , including CMs, is very promising in my opinion for future releases (season 6).

Nice review dude! I'm glad you also mentioned the exploration of New Kaineng and Echovald; those quickly became 2 of my least favorite zones in the game. In general I think EoD is a mixed bag. The story, strikes and jadebots are really cool while fishing, skiffs and the turtle mount are underwhelming to say the least. The new maps could also use some better rewards like the jackpot items in the other expacs. I don't really have any reason to play the new content after going through it a couple of times. New players should definitely get the other expacs first since those add a lot more value to the game than EoD does.
Ah, yes! We share the same view! I think fishing is fun but right now I never felt like going all over the world to fish. The Turtle mount can be a bit more useful. It feels sluggish to drive sometimes and the cannoneer does not always have the ability to fire if the drive stays in the same position. I do think it's a really good expansion. I should do a re-review in 2-3 years or so when there is more Living World content added to the maps.

I agree that the more serious tone of the story really helps, other than that yeah vertical map design is annoying without a flying mount but great overall
I agree! Guild Wars always had a serious story but the recent expansions made some dialogues a bit witty. Which is fine. But I want want a gritty/dark story to sink my teeth in!
Yup. I have HoT and PoF from previous playing but I have so much content just in the base game right now leveling up my fresh necro that I don't see myself needing it right now. Just gonna continue the journey chronologically because not having context is why I quit previous expansions
Sounds like a smart decision. Start with Heart of Thorns then Path of Fire and thennnnn End of Dragons.
Over a week back into the game going strong. Just got my glider and mushroom jumping in hot :)
8:02 jade bots activation for new characters isn't story based, you only need to reach cantha and u get the bot (if you have it already on a diferent character with the masteries done)
Yeah, but the enhancements are character bound. Also, you need to craft a core for every character you want to use the bot on. That felt really unnecessary for me
You don't have to unlock jade bots via story other than for the first character.

@@Kyosika ah, yes, they are. I misunderstood you on the video, then, as I thought you meant that you need to progress on the story with alts too to get jade not powers 😅
Jade bot is not per character in the sense you MUST do story to "unlock" it. If you want it on a second character, either just craft a Jade Bot core yourself for them or buy a Tier 1 Core from the tradepost for just over 1g :)

I had a question ! If I have not bought expansions 1/2 and I buy just expansion 3 would that still work ? Or not
That would still work! You can buy any expansion you want without needing the others.
man it sure has been a while since ive played guild wars 2 might be a pretty good time to get back into the game and that revenant elite spec looks awesome

I just wish they would do something for sPvP too... It would be perfect if the also released at least one new map for each mode. Not only strike missions but fractals and such.
More sPvP game modes would also be nice!!

End of Dragons was awesome, played it first then went back and did the previous expacs. I can say, without a doubt, End of Dragons was superior in everyway to the older content.

Good review and general overview for EoD! But personally I would rate EoD way worse. For me it's not half as good as HoT or PoF.
I just got EoD recently but i've been playing since 2012 and bought HoT/PoF on release. I didn't want to buy EoD since I never saw a reason why I should. Why should I go fishing? Why should I use a skiff? Why do I need a turtle mount when I got all the other mounts already? There was (and still is) no big selling point for me.
HoT had Gliding/Raids and Elite Specs for the first time... big selling points imo.
PoF had mounts and fun activities (bounties, mount races)... also big selling points.
But EoD is just lacking something remarkable... I just got it now for the few strike missions since it's hard to find non-EoD groups.
And isn't it really weird design (or even bad design), that you get a skiff in Seitung Province but the following EoD maps aren't really designed for skiffs at all? Echovald has literally just ankle deep water and roots are blocking everything :D HoT maps were designed around gliding and PoF around the mounts. You actually had to make use of it and it was fun to do so. But after 10 mins of trying out the skiff I never found myself in a situation where I wanted to use my skiff again.
You have a number of very fair points! Although PoF had some bigger selling points, bounties are somewhat abandoned. Not many people seem to be playing them.

PoF is better in terms of everything. You know it, I know it, everybody knows it. Cool review tho.
PoF is great but I think EoD is just as good :)
I never got the Grypho or Skyscale because I know it will make me lazy and lose a lot of content, even now I am sometimes ignoring the other mounts specially the Springer and try to reach each section by myself because a lot of maps are made to explore and mounts allow you to skip it, I usually use them only after I alread made a standard exploration of the zone and want to go back quickly.
Overall EoD is a 9/10 for me, I loved it and a lot of the story, how everything was presented, but yeah the verticallity of some maps kind of lost me like it did in HoT years ago hahaha

Good lord,if you feel the story in EOD is "very good" i dread what you find to be very bad.
Compared to the other expansions it is so much better! It is not the best video game story I have ever played hehe
Name me 1 MMO that has better story and presentation than GW2 that's NOT FF14? Mostly every other MMO suck at this department and only GW2 and FF seem to get it. Plus GW2 has the better presentation because it's voice acted in real time which adds to the immersion.
End of dragons was shallow and retarded compared to other expansions, not to mention the core story.

Having a flying mount system gatekeeped behind a huge grind and gold for new players is super frustrating, that's one of the reasons I'm not playing anymore, everyone who has been playing for long time has a lot of gold and time sinked into that mount, it's super unfair. Mounts should be standarized for everyone and be just cosmetic, like any other mmoprg did.
Mounts are open to everybody… just two mounts you need to put some effort into. Well three including roller beetle. Don’t really see an issue since they give you mounts now.. before you had to do PoF to unlock raptor. Game is great honestly.
U stoped playing because u have to grind for the skyscale?? I play the game since the release and never needed the skyscale...
@@caetanyyy I stopped for many reasons, but one is the flying mounts, it should be like the ground ones, just a quick quest and you have it, it creates an unfair situation for anyone new.
@@Colouh but everything people do with the skyscale you can do with the springer, if the problem is "vertical"... And now a days, if u grind for the skyscale you get it in a week or something, but you do that if you want, not because you are in need... So there is no reason to think it is unfair the way you grind for the flying mounts... Actually i have started to unlock the skyscale in the beggining of the year and still didn't hurry to finish it because there is no need for that xd
I have been playing for several years and I do not have any flying mounts.
The flying mounts will not help you in End Game content.
I have never needed a flying mount in Structured Player Versus Player or in Raids or in Strike Missions.
Why are you so concerned about flying mounts?
