I lived with blue bird 🐦 in my heart for 52yrs out of fear then one fine day i just collapsed as i could not bear the burden any longer .I cried i screamed and let the world know of its existence and lost everything i had accumulated over the years . I am rebuilding my life again with a blue bird 🐦 and at last I am at peace Tears roll from the eyes only out of gratitude towards myself.💕

When ever I'm alone at night contemplating my life this poem comes to mind ever since I discovered this video years back. It's beautiful! We all have different personalities or ideas about ourselves that we're holding back in fear of being rejected. We never quite live the ideal personas we want ourselves to have or express everything we want to. When you examine reality it's just your habits and your current ideas about yourself that restrict you. Is there even a way towards that enlightenment? Or is letting go of that idea enlightenment in of itself? These are questions that cannot be answered with just mere introspection.
Of course they can, the answer is that you must try. Your bird can sing, being tough means nothing when you don't have guts and this is what Bukowski talks about: he takes the easy way out by being miserable, writing about being miserable when he knows he could have been happy if he really tried. It's one thing to be honest with yourself, it's something completely different to actually take the steps to change your truth. This is enlightenment.

I remember reading this poem for the first time and crying like a baby. Charles Bukowski articulated feelings that I had always felt, but could never put into my own words. I saw myself as the bluebird, and it hurt.
This is such a beautiful and honest poem. I think the bluebird represents human sensitivity/vulnerability-(our inner self or our true self; the very essence of our soul) that we mask from the world by our (public self)- out of fear and for our own protection.

Even though his poems kinda helped fuel my addiction because i could relate so well i found many times his words led me to Drink and drug. His words also kept alive fore they gave me hope and desire, his words propelled me to share my own inner war. His influence gave me a weapon to fight with.The more i put words on paper the more i began to win my war. Wonderful. This is one of Hank's best moments. The music and reading really complement the poem. It breaks my heart a little because, I think, it captures what Bukowski was all about.
I agree. I think this is one Hank's most sincere poems ever. People that say he was a woman hater and that the only thing he did was drinking have not really read his works. He was a beautiful man who felt inferior to everyone and who found an outlet for emotions through his writing. And that's what's writing all about. "Poetry is what happens when nothing else can."

When we look at people who achieve true greatness, it's rare that they did it for the happiness during the experience. Rather, they suffered for their passion, were willing to sacrifice themselves for their purpose; any lasting pleasure only coming after the task's end. What would history make of Captain Oates, or Madam Curie without self-sacrifice? What art comes from Van Gogh without intense loneliness? The irony being that he describes himself as "too tough" or "too clever" to let it out, when in reality it is the strongest of us who can be totally vulnerable, and let our inner bluebirds sing their songs for the rest of the world to hear. Alfred Wu not hardly man. Hank had a penchant for drinking and opening his inner demons on paper. It was a job, and with that job came a routine of alcohol and depression. He knew he could never be normal, less risk the (bluebird) getting out and being normal with zero spark or creativity. It’s in all of his work. I read this poem when I was 21 in New York City, it was 1985, a friend had given me an underground book of some of Bukowski's works, there I was sitting on a fire escape tearing up as I though my life and my relationship with my family was spiralling out of control, so I quit drugs and enrolled back into school . I saw Bukowski as a mentor you could love but his life was a telling warning of what you didn't want to end up like, in retrospect i think he was "maybe" a man that unconsciously or consciously wanted to showed the bumps and evils in the road without being a father or authoritarian. "see me?" you will be fine.

I feel like this is one of the biggest problems in society. We try too hard to conform to a norm and stop beeing ourselves. We stop listening to what really motivates and inspires us deeply, instead we live a life we are told to live. This is (in my opinion) what makes us so depressed and sad. There's someting inside of us, a part of us (bluebird) that wants to see the world, wants to experience all the beauty we have in our world, and we cage it inside us while we live a boring live with a 8 to 5 job and hours of TV... We get spoonfed technology, fashion and we get told what to buy, what to listen to, what to watch, what to know and what to think. The world is out there guys and girls! Go out, adventure and dee the world. Write, sing, drink, party, fuck, try new stuff, give and take what you can and never NEVER stay in your comfort zone!

You're right that we should let our own individuality shine, to not conform, but by imitating someone else who was not a conformist, we merely conform to another pattern. This surmises the humanity of the archetypal red-blooded male. Warrior-esque, with his core weakness being in touch with his own sensitive side. to show vulnerability. because he's aware the armor that is his ego has that weakness. it's a tragic beauty thats rarely seen, let alone; acknowledged.

The first Bukowski poem I ever discovered years ago. Immersed myself in his writing after, but at almost 42 I always come back to this one tl listen or read it. Or I think of it at times. Always resonated with me since i was younger.

I feel like bluebird was supposed to symbolize innocence and the good side of all of us. None of us are as innocent as we used to be and our experiences lead us to push the bluebird down and not let him out
I took it that the bluebird is our emotions. He lets the bluebird out when no one is looking. He keeps the facade of being either a tough guy or at least keeping his emotions in check. No matter what, at some point we all have to let our emotions out whether we admit it or not. We are all human and have feelings.
Yeah i see it as that pure emotion and consciousness we all really are at out very core, the real loving us without ego and jobs and all other labels the real loving us with no front put on. He hid it inside and only allowed it to show when no one was around as a lot of us tend to do.

I read this poem when I was 21 in New York City, it was 1985, a friend had given me an underground book of some of Bukowski's works, there I was sitting on a fire escape tearing up as I though my life and my relationship with my family was spiralling out of control, so I quit drugs and enrolled back into school
. I saw Bukowski as a mentor you could love but his life was a telling warning of what you didn't want to end up like, in retrospect i think he was "maybe" a man that unconsciously or consciously wanted to showed the bumps and evils in the road without being a father or authoritarian. "see me?" you will be fine.

All of us have some kind of a bluebird in our hearts and it’s not the things it does to us but the things we do to deal with it defines who we really are.It’s not the bluebird who we put into a cage, it’s the bluebird turning our hearts into cages.

Imagine if we all let our birds out, it would be a world of beautiful birds instead of the f.... hell we have.

I feel like this is one of the biggest problems in society. We try too hard to conform to a norm and stop beeing ourselves. We stop listening to what really motivates and inspires us deeply, instead we live a life we are told to live.
This is (in my opinion) what makes us so depressed and sad. There's someting inside of us, a part of us (bluebird) that wants to see the world, wants to experience all the beauty we have in our world, and we cage it inside us while we live a boring live with a 8 to 5 job and hours of TV...
We get spoonfed technology, fashion and we get told what to buy, what to listen to, what to watch, what to know and what to think.
The world is out there guys and girls! Go out, adventure and dee the world. Write, sing, drink, party, fuck, try new stuff, give and take what you can and never NEVER stay in your comfort zone!
I just found out about Bukowski. He's my new favorite, idk how I haven't heard him sooner.

You're right that we should let our own individuality shine, to not conform, but by imitating someone else who was not a conformist, we merely conform to another pattern. I really like your comment, it really speaks to me, that I should be myself and not walk, as you said, in the shadow of others. But how do you find that, how do you do that when you're inclined to imitate others, how can you be original, when there are so many things that had been done before you ? How do you find that deep sense of individuality and do your 'thang' ?

This surmises the humanity of the archetypal red-blooded male. Warrior-esque, with his core weakness being in touch with his own sensitive side. to show vulnerability. because he's aware the armor that is his ego has that weakness. it's a tragic beauty thats rarely seen, let alone; acknowledged.

Well it's like when I am sleeping by myself at night feeling like a little kid that needs a warm hug, and every morning put my serious face mask on and try my best until the night comes again and feels like i am a kid again
The bluebird in my heart went out a long time ago, but no one understood so i hid it once again. I thought it died. For many years i thought i was happy but He came out when the person i love the most died. It never left from that time on.
Every time I listen to this poem it breaks my blackbird heart and I want to cry 😢 I identify with the bluebird.

The first Bukowski poem I ever discovered years ago. Immersed myself in his writing after, but at almost 42 I always come back to this one tl listen or read it. Or I think of it at times. Always resonated with me since i was younger.

I feel like bluebird was supposed to symbolize innocence and the good side of all of us. None of us are as innocent as we used to be and our experiences lead us to push the bluebird down and not let him out

I took it that the bluebird is our emotions. He lets the bluebird out when no one is looking. He keeps the facade of being either a tough guy or at least keeping his emotions in check. No matter what, at some point we all have to let our emotions out whether we admit it or not. We are all human and have feelings.
Yeah i see it as that pure emotion and consciousness we all really are at out very core, the real loving us without ego and jobs and all other labels the real loving us with no front put on. He hid it inside and only allowed it to show when no one was around as a lot of us tend to do.
It symbolizes sorrow, joy, happiness, and all other emotions that can be conceived as weakness from a man. We hide our bluebird, in fear of being exposed.
