This was a cool review to stumble upon. Came for the Trees review, left with so many new names I've never heard of to start listening to. Appreciate it

They have a self titled album that was insane
Also Tom Scott was the MC for Home Brew, their self titled album smashed the charts in NZ

Great discussion guys, really interesting to hear your inputs from people who aren't from NZ. As you said it's such a compositional album which I think is mostly due to workflow, from what I'm aware it's not like your average producer sending the rapper the track, but these guys all collaboratively improvising and iterating on ideas in real time. It really shows in their live sets too, absolutely the best artists i've ever been to see, the skill these dudes have is crazy, would definitely recommend if you ever get the chance. Cheers

Just wanna say a couple things about Tom Scott and this review.. Firstly I've seen other comments mention his earlier work with his other groups, and one in particular mentions Home Brew and their self titled album, but they had a few fire EP's before that you should really check out starting with Last Week which is a concept album with 7 songs, so you can probably guess the concept.
Two things about his earlier work I wanna touch on that are present in Last Week is the anti-capitalist themes, and the binge drinking themes. The binge drinking themes are interesting because it's a big element of the culture here in Aotearoa, and this is interesting because his later efforts are more cannabis forward and critical of alcohol. Some of the lyrics in Flying Pigs allude to this, although I think the most important ones might be a guest rapper in that third verse, not sure if that's Tom or not, but he talks about DB Breweries and Lion Nathan being the real gangsters, and they are, buying up all the craft breweries.
But really the most important one I wanted to mention was the anti-capitalist themes because you guys didn't like the "self pitying" vibe of the album, but if you go back and listen to his earlier work with Home Brew and @Peace, particularly songs like LISTEN TO US(Home Brew), and Be Like(@Peace) among others, his empathy and understanding of economics and politics is outstanding. So it's not so much self pitying as it is empathy for others "going through it". He had a real beef with our former conservative Prime Minister John Key, running around the tables at a music award show while he was performing Home Brew's song On A Benefit searching for him like "where's John?". Dunno.. Just seemed like a weird criticism from my perspective. Appreciate your ears on this anyway.

The anti capitalist vibes were definitely not something I picked up on and that is undoubtedly my wheel house. Sorry to say we're not clocked in to his art to such a degree that we know his backstory. I'll be paying attention more with that in mind in the future. I appreciate your comment. - Meg

Awesome review, I'm from NZ and I always feel like Tom Scott and other hip hop cats here are criminally underrated compared to the popularity of US hip hop, wish more american hip hop fans knew about them. Check out his previous work like El Sol by Average Rap Band, Home Brew self titled, and @Peace. Would love to hear ur guys thoughts. Chur

Tom Scott is the best writer out of NZ hands down. He's a UK born kiwi but is super down with Te Āo Māori. He has an awesome interview with Moana that's worth watching to get some more insight on him. He's very vocal about his politics and beliefs, for that I'm thankful.
Also, side note, I'm 98% sure he had a black guy do the hook for flying pigs
Dope review tho, I'm so glad Toms name is moving overseas

@@secretHOUSEagainst Tom himself has a catalogue of amazing releases going back over 15 years, so for that check out his groups; Homebrew, @peace and average rap band. My personal favourites growing up are Che Fu (particularly 2 b spacific and navigator) and King Kapisi (savage thoughts). Other guys worth checking include Melodownz, Raiza Biza, Team Dynamite.
Some really cool 2000s era stuff includes Scribe, Deceptikonz, Nesian Mystik, PNC and David Dallas
At the mo outside of Hip Hop there is an amazingly talented guy called Troy Kingi, all of his albums are in different genres, he's great.
I also recommend Hollie Smith and Ladi6
I've rambled on a bit but hopefully I've given you guys a really good skim of NZ music.
Undoubtedly I could recommend so much more and so could other people
