COMPLETELY Changing the Way I Train - Doubling My Mileage

  • I'm taking a massive risk this year by completely changing the way I train, I used to run less than 30 miles a week with plenty of cross training. However being in and out of injury means I've had to try something new, doubling my mileage will strengthen my body, condition it to be able to take more of a beating. When I'm expected to race up to 3 times at major championships I need to trust my body will hold up.

    I’m a collegiate runner in America dealing with injury issues and I’m learning a lot from your videos. Keep it up and good luck this season.

      @@Elliot_Gilesa video that goes more in-depth into your cross training methods/how not to overdo it would be really good insight for me. I ran my fast times off 25 miles a week, got hurt trying to run more, so aiming to lower mileage and cross train like a maniac as you have.

    90km+ a week and 200ms in 24-25s means pretty good shape

    I like the move you're making. Better to take a risk and make yourself a contender as you said.

    Never heard of the term "junk miles" before, I had to put the subtitles on just to make sure I heard it correctly. It does come off as a tiny bit disrespectful (unwanted mail/mileage). Perhaps you may want to change it recovery milage? As to you changing your training method/ways. Wow! Old school, mileage, mileage, mileage! When you ran you 3.32/33 last year in a diamond league, I thought, how the hell does 800m runner with low mileage do that? I looked into your alternative/cross training - extremely impressive to say the least. I had you down as the 2023 UK Champ for the 1500m, my line of thought was, if this comes down to an sprint finish, no-one is getting the upper hand over an 800m runner, especially a 1.43 runner at that. Obviously I got that wrong, but I am still convinced (even though UK 1500m is absolutely stack (best in the world?)) that you if remain healthy, there is no reason in my eyes, why you can't get to the heights of Kerr and Wightman. Loving the channel and unlike Jakob, you're so damn likeable.

      Hey Andrew, I agree with your thought regarding junk mileage. Later in the video, I changed my thoughts to conditioning miles/runs. I tried to capture my thoughts at the moment, which changed/developed throughout filming the video.
      I ran 3:30 last year off 25-35 miles per week whilst training for the 800; I figured I could run much faster if I targeted the 1500 in training. I quickly realised back-to-back races require an extensive base of training, and I believe I can be a contender this year!
      Pleased you like the channel!

    Hey man - love the videos. You mentioned in the video that whilst zone training was important that can only be used by professional athletes properly and that the average runner should just focus on “high quality sessions”. I’m just a little confused on what you meant by that? Does that mean focus more on speed work? Let me know if I’m misinterpreting something!

    • @Elliot_Giles
      @Elliot_Giles  Před 5 měsíci

      Hey Adam, sorry I should have spoken more about this. What I meant was zone training is for everyone, both recreational and elite runners, but is best utilised by those who run high mileage, i.e. someone who runs 30 miles per week versus someone who runs 100 miles per week. The 100pw Zone training plays a massive role in ensuring you stay fit and healthy and capitalise on training. The 30 miles per week should put less emphasis on zone training because quality should be the critical component.

      @@Elliot_Giles that clears it up somewhat. I’m just a little curious what you mean but “quality” for a session. What makes it quality. Cheers for the response.

    • @Elliot_Giles
      @Elliot_Giles  Před 5 měsíci

      @@AdamJansen786 If we are referring to the same point, quality, in my view, is usually a higher intensity, focusing on lower volume and higher speed.
      Quality usually hits the system fairly hard and almost always ends with lactic acid, whereas quantity is generally controlled and fatigue or your aerobic system is more challenged I.e. Sticking to your zone.

      Hey David, I still plan on competing in the 800, but we've switched our approach. I always intended to run the 1500, but injuries always stopped me.
      I can cheat the 800 and run fast off of 6 weeks training, the 1500 takes a lot more planning and training to get right.
