    Every time Eva and I travel to Rome, she shows me around and picks what we eat. Makes sense, right? After all, Eva used to live in the Eternal City and has never led me astray thus far.
    However, this time we're switching things up! I've been doing my research and I have some bucket list Roman foods that I want to try. But I'm not if she'll be super jazzed about all of my choices...

    My English partner didn't understand Eva's reaction to the last meal featured in this video. I told him 'It's like going to a restaurant and paying 20 quid for beans on toast'. His reply: 'Well, you pay for the experience I guess'. Me: 'An experience you can have for half of the price at home'.

      In italy eating pasta in a restaurant isnt cheap. Pizza, YES. 5 to 10 euros you get a pizza and a coke, or a beer..
      but, for pasta in Italy you pay 15 euro.. now, most italians know how to make Pasta at home. and it will cost 15 euro to feed 6 people for dinner.
      so let's say they paid 30 Euros for pastas... Im pretty sure both of them could make the same dish at home.
      so, in conclusion your partner is right, you go out for dinner for the event. you pay for the experience. eating at home for a 3rd of the price is a different experience.

    • @OneOfDisease
      @OneOfDisease Před měsícem

      In Japan my wife is the same way about Japanese curry restaurants, we could make a gigantic pot of curry that would feed 15+ people for how much you would pay to feed 3 people. And usually the curry at home is equal or slightly better.

      @donohirst Před 17 dny

      In England you can pretty much only eat pasta at most Italian restaurants, it used to drive my mum mad as she remembers when it wasn't like that, there are many fine Italian dishes sans pasta, just you wouldn't know that going to any chain type restaurants. So go to family owned establishments I suppose is the answer. What the answer is to most English people consistently eating the same bloody thing and not being more adventurous thus making choice better for everyone is beyond me, can't undo many years of food habits

    Not Rome, but we just arrived home from five weeks in Tuscany and the Veneto. We have spent a total of nine weeks there in the past nine months. How to describe it? An assault on the senses. An extremely nice one. We have been travelling there over the past 17 years and every day spent there is an adventure.

  • @JACKeREB3
    @JACKeREB3 Před měsícem +19

    4:10 Actually, the “panna” you’re referring to is the exception: the emulsion with milk and oil is what we call “panna da cucina”, we use it for sauces and such and it’s made that way just sometimes. Most of the times it’s actual cream! And the one that gets whipped and used in pastries is always heavy whipping cream, just like in America. I don’t know why Eva told you that it wasn’t heavy cream because I’m pretty sure she knows! We probably just have a lower fat percentage than the American one

    • @petraliverani1247
      @petraliverani1247 Před měsícem +1

      Yeah I was confused by the maritozzo not being filled with real cream I wouldn't imagine they'd use mock cream (a margarine concoction) as they often do in pastries and cakes in Australia - hate that stuff.

    • @BobHJr
      @BobHJr Před měsícem +2

      @@petraliverani1247 Plus, its practically impossible to whip cooking "panna". Maybe if it's somehow stabilized with gelatin or something. Making it doubly fake. I always thought it was just lightly sweetened real cream too.

    Harper, although I appreciate your effort of bringing Eva to the place where the Alfredo dish started, this restaurant was sold to people outside of the De Lelio family in 1943. The good news is that he opened a new ristorante in 1950 that is still open on Piazza Augusto Imperatore that is still open... gold forks and with all the history of celebrities and world leaders having eaten there. Il Vero Alfredo.

    I spent many a summers in Italy in my youth in the 70’s and 80’s and as a fellow hater of whipped cream, I sympathized with Eva. Also, the entire time as the day was moving along I kept on saying to myself…come on Harper, choose Alfredo! I am well aware that it’s a tourist trap, but still…it’s a rite of passage and it’s still pretty damn good. When I have my family from Italy visit me in NY, I know that I will have to do some touristy things with them and I grit my teeth and deal with it, just like Eva did. Great video as always!

    Il maritozzo con la panna è un classico! For the record, la panna da montare è ottenuta per affioramento spontaneo in seguito a decantazione lenta oppure tramite centrifugazione; contiene tra il 30% e il 35% di grassi ed è equivalente alla heavy whipping cream che contiene il 36% di grassi.
    Tutto il resto non centra "gnente" con la cucina romana. I piatti classici romani sono la pasta all'amatriciana, la coratella, i carciofi alla giudia, la pajata, la coda alla vaccinara, la trippa ed altri che al momento mi sfuggono.

    One of my best experiences in France was eating at a Japanese restaurant. It was pretty traditional Japanese, but you could see it was somewhat catered to the French palate. Obviously the french food we ate was amazing, but French food is not the only good food in France, so I thought it would be good to try something international while we were there. I REALLY wanted to try a Chinese place whose menu looked very different from American style Chinese food, but it was closed the day we had free to try it.

      But I believe that apart from foreign tourists who enter that restaurant out of curiosity and because it is the place where the famous Fettuccine Alfredo are born, no Italian, no Roman goes to pay 24 € (!) to eat some pasta with butter and parmigiano reggiano, a dish he can make anytime at home in 10 minutes. Usually an Italian who goes to a restaurant does not go to eat some pasta with butter and parmesan cheese. Let's say it is not the "classic dish" that one orders in a restaurant. Of course there is no question that it is a delicious dish, like most simple Italian dishes that with only two ingredients you get a super delicious dish .

    I'm not terribly surprised people going to Italy from the USA love the ice-cream there. For me, a guy from Poland, it's not that much of an attraction, since most popular ice-cream parlours in Poland make them the same way as in Italy and in Polish language they're just called "lody włoskie" meaning "Italian ice-cream". I have a few favourite places in my city that make amazing ones. And I also got pretty delicious ones in Croatia besides.

    So, like old home week, Otelag…..always a line when it’s warm out, Roscioli….never had their Maritozzo, but have eaten there many times….Next on the list, gonna run to Supplizio for a snack!! Alfredo’s…..the real thing!! And no cream!!! Bravo!!! It’s about the company and the experience you have….. i make it for my grandson all the time….Next time head down to Nonna Betta’s…their carciofo Alla Giada is awesome!!

    Harper, watching the two of you eating this is hilarious. I’m in my kitchen having a bagel, a lot less messy but not nearly as tasty I am sure. Enjoy!
