    8:55 you have no idea. The reason the city doesn't have a metro station is because they find ruins everywhere they dig and for so many years there have been discussions about whether they should move these ruins to museums or not. The plan for the metro station started in 1989 and it's still not done to this day. Some stations are finished though. It's said to be completely done and running by the end of 2023.

    Very nice video. One correction. Hagia Sophia wasn't a mosque that became an Orthodox church. It was build as an Orthodox church and then was transformed into a mosque and after the liberation of the city it became again a church. Most of the mosques (if not all) that were in Thessaloniki were Byzantine churches before. The actual buildings of the ottomans were some baths and towers for the city defence. Thank you

Saint Demetrius whom you’re named after lived and martyred in this city in the place of the church you visited and Thessaloniki used to be the largest Jewish city after Jerusalem(population-wise) until WWII. It had a very large population of Sephardi Jews. There’s a museum you can visit about it and you can learn more about the history of the city inside the White Tower. I hope you guys had a great time! I was born here and lived for a couple of years in the 80's. Thessaloniki is a better city than Athens in my opinion.
    St. Demetrios is a Roman design cathedral and not Byzantine. Byzantine churches like St Catherine's in Ano Poli have a more rotund or circular design were St Demetrios is more rectangular and long. Hopefully you can upload more of the city. Great video!!

      Byzantine is actually Roman. It just refers to different periods of Roman history. The term ‘Byzantine’ is a historiographic which first appeared 100 years after the fall of Constantinople and the end of the Byzantine empire. The Byzantines called themselves Romans and their empire was the direct continuation of the Roman Empire. They just spoke Greek, they were Christians and they had a Greek culture.

    • @blackpanther50
      @blackpanther50 Před 2 lety

      @@angrybirdo I was referring to the architecture or design of the church, not the nationality of the church. I even stated it in my response..
      I lived in Greece for a period of my life and at school there was a clear delineation of what period each church was built in and what its architecture is.
      I lived opposite Agia Ekaterini (St Catherine's) which is 12-13th century Byzantine rythmos (design). I remember having to do an exam in year 8 identifying church designs in medieval history class.

    • @vanmars5718
      @vanmars5718 Před 2 lety

      @@blackpanther50 The church of Hagios Demetrius is a Byzantine church (if we have to use this term). The structure we see today is a Basilica created in 629-634 AD. The beginning of "Byzantine empire" is in the 4th century AD so it's not even a conversation about what it is. The architectural type of the church is a typical Basilica as it was established in the late Roman architectural/early Byzantine (palaiochristian) and it can be found throughout the Roman Empire. So the type isn't what makes it "more roman", there's no such a thing. Is a Byzantine church because it was built by the Eastern Roman Empire/Byzantium.
