Is Paul Merson misunderstood?
He's a good guy
No he's a gambling freak, which he clearly cliams,. So very understood
Nope i understand his bs fully
I love Paul merson
I've not gambled for 2 years after 20 years of losing year after year after year,I've got 3 kids I'm a great dad and never had a day off work I'm not a bad person and neither is paul
Sounds as though he’s being honest.
Just some constructive criticism to you Rob, when speaking with someone who’s expressing severe life difficulties, try not to respond with “shit” or “fuck” consistently.
I so remember that feeling of relief when I lost it all. But then the next day when you wake up and realise you lost it all is the worst...
Been there recently! Back to the drawing board
@@BridgeStamford I started at 18, and gave up at 34. Honestly never thought I would ever be able to do it, but I did. My advice to YOU is give up today, now, and start to rack up that time between playing and not playing, that's the key. As someone who left it 8 years ago, I have zero thoughts of going back to it anymore. The only thoughts I have are of how stupid I was for getting myself into that vicious circle in the first. Today is your day mate, I promise you that the buzz in the pit of your stomach that makes you keep going back will die away if you let it...🤞
It’s the most sickening feeling that would last up to a week
@@benrichards3991 year later and going well. Not sure I subscribe to your logic as logic doesn’t apply to a compulsive gambler. Been a tough road and still on it. I’ll never look back and think I was stupid as addiction deserves more respect than that
“The only end point is zero” is the most honest thing he could of said about gambling
That honestly hit home
Gambling screwed my life up , to many debts and biggest shame and anxiety
Ex gambler myself and he is spot on with all of it, especially the part about being relived when you had lost all your money, yes a crushing low but you are now out of that awful cycle you can't control
Just watched this and I just want to say that as a gambling addict whose been clean I have so much respect for Paul and I totally agree when he said losing time is his biggest regret also as a lifelong Arsenal supporter you were my idol
I just want to give Mers a hug. Such honesty and helpful insight to his struggles. Great interview.
He is right about bookies shutting accounts down, they also limit the amount people can bet when they are winners
Everytime I want to learn something about recovery in helping me. I listen to Merse....the honesty and identifying I get is mind blowing. I've read his book and it got me in the rooms...love you Merse
This is one of the best interviews I've watched. Fantastic awareness! No matter what he's made, won or loss it's a horrible illness that I hope he overcomes. Love Merse
Thank you for tuning in and what a kind comment
Agreed. If only he was as aware about the Covid fraud, maybe he wouldnt be so quick to condemn his friend.
The most influential video i have watched. I am 54 and have certainly struggled with booze, drugs, women and gambling. but here we are. Well said, thank you x
One of my favourite players growing up. Very brave to speak about his gambling addiction. It definitely got me looking at addiction in a different way.
Rob, you did it again; brilliant interview with a wonderfully honest man and you led him to some painful places in his life.
Just like you did with the amazing Paul Gascgoine. You make this old bloke teary often in your interviews!
Thank you for your many interviews and giving these wonderful people all the time they need to answer questions.
You have a skill there.
After so many interviews you should be!
There are many tragic stories among the past generations of football players and other sports stars. I bet you would have got a great interview with the likes of Alex Higgins and George Best (among others).
I know you have some opinions about mental health (despite your own dad’s bipolar) that I don’t totally agree with, but when you ask leading questions and let the guest open up you do it without judgement and with the respect they deserve.
Keep it up Rob.
Love your interviews.
What an incredible and emotional journey Paul has had... Great to see you Rob let him talk away and get to those answers we want to know about this horrible illness. Best of luck to him and his incredible and understanding family! Well done Merse and keep the faith...
That was one of the best interviews ive listened to in years. Im not sure as a Spurs fan you could get me to listen to an hour of any other Arsenal player. Paul deserves massive credit for the work his is doing to help others with their recoveries. I wish him many more good days than bad.
Paul Merson does not get the credit he deserves not only was he a great player of his era!he comes across as a great man and I love how open and honest he is about his illness as this is what's needed not only to help himself but by him doing these shows, interviews, podcasts etc he's helping many others who are like him. I know you probably won't see this comment Paul but I really wish all the best mate. Kind regards Gary 💙⚽️
Yes I think it's great how open he is, thank you for tuning in and making such a considered comment
@@RobMooreDisruptors As a fan of football and of paul I love listening to former player's be it STORIES from there playing career or about there own struggles as it makes us feel more connected to people we respect and look up to because at the end of all this they are human to and like us they go through things but the difference is when it's me the world doesn't care but if it's someone like paul its global news and that alone must be tough to deal with but by him also having a following people want to listen to him and although I'm not addicted to drugs alcohol gambling by paul speaking about what he has he's going to help so many people and that's why Paul is a bloody legend ⚽️💙
Absolutely brilliant podcast and can totally relate to every single word Paul says,im just over a year gamble free now after 22 years gambling non stop losing everything time after time after time.
Keep up the great work. Amazing that you've stopped.
@@mukesh.dhimar thankyou man
Well done that's a great achievement to stop after doing it continuously for 22 years. Can I ask what support mechanisms you have to be able to stop? GA meetings, a 'sponsor' to talk to in weak moments, etc?

Enough respect to Paul Merson. Know so many addicts through life it is heartbreaking to watch it happen to people you care about. You feel so powerless they are hellbent on self destruction.
Great interview and I have a lot of time for Paul and his troubles. It's obviously harder than we all think to jack it in, and the sums of money being taken about are eye watering. I'd like to say get well and beat it but like he says it's with you and the steps he and his wife have taken to avert it is always a step forward. Good Luck Paul, and once a gain a great interview
I've just seen the Paul merson interview. Absolutely well done to you both. Has a massive Arsenal fan I used to watch Paul home and away. He was so talented but you could see the drink ect was affecting his game. My dad RIP loved Paul he used to get his name wrong by calling him mercer and used to shout you silly sod sort yourself out cos you have got so much talent. Again well done. John
Absolutely fantastic interview with Paul open and honest great awareness to people out there who struggling with addiction remember your not bad person it's illness
As an Arsenal fan I have always loved Paul Merson the player, but after listening to this interview it proves that he is a great, grerat man. Thanks for everything you have done Paul and I hope everyone appreciates your attemps to help recovcering addicts.
I’m a Leeds United supporter (of 50+ years) and I completely agree with you!!!
The bit where he talks about the fans make you famous and you don’t play for the other team, impeccable integrity and principles.
Amazing episode 👏
I can relate with Paul's feelings regards gambling
Geuinely one of the best interviews I’ve ever seen! Rob keep it up! Merse- absolutely top bloke and as a compulsive gambler myself a lot of what merse says hit home!
Thank you that is a really nice comment I appreciate that
Great interview Paul, great footballer, and a real person, we all have strengths and weaknesses
Dear Paul, you are amazing. Thank you for being so honest. I have my own addictions, we are human.
Thank you Paul, 125 days clean na me but all I can connect with , done acl at 17 at wba fc that’s when it started 4 me, been out of treatment 4 months im 34 now, life’s been a roller coaster, but just 4 today, thank you Paul, kind standing a stone throw from mine, played against you at coursey lane charity game about 12 years ago now, you and lee hendry, running the show, meet you in pub after too, im clean now, wish you well on your recovery, hope you get this message
Can’t wait for this. Absolutely amazing person. I’ve watched the James English podcast & only people that have been through this will truly understand. It’s so true in what he says. Top man Paul 👏
i'm with you on that mate. Speaks so much truth on it does Paul. I have read a couple of his books, they are great as well.
Thank you for tuning in Jonny. What did you think?
I'm with le Tissier but i think merson was looking out for him , you can't go against the big corporate regime and expect to stay on their payroll but Matt put his principles first and that's courage
Absolutely agree,I love Merse but it's because so many people choose to look the other way and not speak out that people get cancelled and the censorship continues.
This is something that is completely relatable to any compulsive gambler. Of course I don't nor ever will earn anywhere near the amount Paul Merson does and has done. But the context is exactly the same. I was actually nodding my head all through this.
It's an awful illness. Disease. Unfortunately I do still think that people are not being understanding towards this horrible way of life.
The good news is, it can be stopped. You can stop.
As a addict this was a great honest interview.
Thank you I appreciate that and sorry to hear about your challenges
First time watching your channel, excellent interview, Merson has grown on me and I really enjoy listening to him, his football opinions are subjective but his life stories are fascinating and scary 👍🏻
Thank you for tuning in and welcome to the channel I hope you enjoy it
Your best one todate absolutely Brilliant Hats off Merse my opinion of u has TOTALLY changed .. what genuine nice bloke
What a Great interview, I've read his book fantastic. So honest and speaking out Top Fellor. Great to see him working for Sky and to be honest love listening to him. Good Luck Paul 👍
thanks to this man for having the courage and conscientiousness to share this experience.
Hi Rob. Wonderful interview and very insightful, especially on gambling. Opened my eyes.
Just letting you know it's Bergkamp not burkamp
I can relate to this so much it’s crazy, gambling addiction really is a silent killer it’s great that guys like Paul speak out on it and raise awareness 👏🏻
This is the realest interview I’ve ever watched because i can relate to everything he’s saying
Thank you both.
My dad had a gambling problem and I was 12 never hated him love him more cos he told me everything at 21 and wish he was here everyday but wouldn't want him to still be struggling with life so I'm glad he is at peace now
Aw I am sorry to hear that but thank you for the very open share
the problem with gambling - blackjack, sports betting etc is the addiction is literally designed for you to lose.
Really good interview. Thanks.
Tiss lifting the lid on the NEEDLECRAFT..Merson should get a backbone
It’s the competition of a sport that gets you into the mindset of compulsive gambling. You vs Them (You against the bookies) and in these sports you’re told to ‘never give up’ and that’s my theory as to why you can’t ever stop until you physically have broke your bank…
Great pod really enjoyed it
Thank you George I really appreciate you sharing
I am or was a compulsive gambler. This is the most insightful story I have seen
so so nice to watch this, what a great guy. Thank you Paul
How refreshing to listen to an honest person in the limelight! Always had complete respect for him! Play Up Pompey!!
Thank you for tuning in and commenting
Thank you so much for being so open and honest Paul. I've struggled with my own addictions for the past 27 years and lots of what you spoke about I understand. Just take one day at a time that's my motto. Great interview, thanks 👍
Have to say I agree with the relief part when you spend time chasing and chasing and you realise you've nothing left to chase with there is definitely a sense of relief it's all over
Funny how I can't think of a single thing I'd want to buy with all the money I just won from a bet but as soon as I lose it all I can think of millions of things I could've got with that money. It's a fucking sickness for sure.
So true that, you don’t think what you could have bought until it’s gone, then the awful reality kicks in. It’s responsible for a lot of suicides is gambling and i honestly believe some people are born addicts. Very sad really
I don’t always agree with what Paul Merson says about football, but he’s been through so much and I have so much respect for him. I hope he finds peace.
What a bloody player he was, btw…👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks for doing this, Paul and Rob.
I’m so grateful for this, THIS WILL and has changed my life. I love Paul for this
I’ve got a nut allergy from now on 😂
That's very kind of you to say and thank you so much for tuning in
I totally understand what he means with the bookies targeting people. I don’t have a problem, but would have a little go on slots once a month. Got bored with it and have just left it for 4/5 months now and I get absolutely bombarded with “we miss you” emails, then you have all the responsible gambling messages at the bottom.
Unsubscribe from their emails. Everything they message has a purpose to get you to bet. Have your own thoughts in life of what to do.
Class interview between two top blokes. Can relate as an ex alco and gambler.
Thank you David, that's very kind and I hope you are OK
Best wishes David
Even being a Palace fan, I can only wish Paul all the best for the future. He always comes across as a nice fellow who's not out for self-pity but rather to help others who may be facing the same issues.
What a lovely message, thank you
@@RobMooreDisruptors No thank you Rob love your channel
top man hope he fully recovers and beats this illness
Superb, Very Humble.
Bookies offering him £10K free bets shows what predators they are, targeting the people who have a problem with gambling , it’s evil behaviour from them
Merse speaks the truth on gambling. Its great to get this info out there to all the future problem gamblers
Thank you for tuning in, have you had experience?
@@RobMooreDisruptors absolutley!..
Gambling addiction is a scary… family men playing so much they literally lose the house their family needs for shelter! That’s insane when you think about it! Taking out a loan from the house and betting it at the casino! I can’t imagine how that ride home felt, knowing it might be the last time you drive into this drive way/home. Telling your wife and kids to pack up because dad lost the house on blackjack! Wow just wowwww
I was really encouraged listening to this.
Paul, if you're a believer in the slightest then here's what I see.
God has saved you and been with you through everything.
Someone who loses everything but finds them self and able to talk so honestly is a beautiful thing.
Thank you for tuning in and for your comment Peter
This guy gave alot of people a great livelihood. The bartender loved him. The casino personnel loved him. He put food on the tables of alot of families. They thank you.
I’m listening. Thank you for the advice. Would love to chat over the phone about addiction 🙏
I'm in addiction recovery and one of the most important things is don't compare, as in just because you didn't rob anyone to gamble or drink doesn't mean your not an alcoholic or gambling addict.
Keep drinking/ gambling and if your a addict and you continue to drink/gamble then you will eventually rob and worse.
Excuse my grammar
It's very interesting what he says about gambling being different, how with drinking or smoking, you just have to NOT put that thing in your body. I have been a smoker and a boozer, but never a gambler, and I can see that's an interesting way to look at it - with drinking for example, you know that you just have to get through today without drinking alcohol. It's that simple, just don't put that thing in your body. But gambling..........where does it start? Where does it stop? You're not doing anything to yourself physically. If you're addicted, the only thing that could get you to stop, is if you have no money left. Not a good system for a successful life, that you're only free if you're permanently penniless.
Good on Tiss for speaking out after his warnings. Sod being quiet. Speak your truth, and in this case. Tiss is speaking THE truth
Amen. As on the pitch he was a few steps ahead of the rest. The penny will final drop for the ignorant masses like Merse. Only then will he realise what a man his friend is.
Matt Le Tissier spoke an inconvenient truth.
It's a pity to hear Paul Merson defend the sharing of opinions, only to advocate censorship if your views aren't shared by powers-that-be and mainstream media.
But I still like Merse regardless. Nice bloke. Great player. Plus he has that insider knowledge of the game that he can clearly still utilise in-spite of his dyslexia.
His stance on being prepared to reject vast (albeit hypothetical) sums for promoting gambling corporations was pretty refreshing to hear.
@@darrenlee9237 Yeah. A decent, genuine bloke who unfortunately has some demons. As a fellow gambling addict i can really relate to what he says but his views on Matt were very disappointing 😞
@@chrispeters5748 Yep

Amen to that Marcus
are you all dismissing the fact that he is now the front face for a bookmaker on tv advertising for them ?
Paul Merson is a top top pundit and a great bloke.
Back then it was bookies on Hugh Street. Now it's 24/7 online.
Fantastic interview. What a fantastic guy (I am Spurs lol)
Beyond brilliant interview if only one person is delivered of their gambling addiction.
The universe rewards the Brave.

This guy is spot on when describing gambling addiction.
I bet about 20-30 quid a day granted I do come out with profit every week but I could of won a lot more but I put a lot back in but he’s right when your wining it’s so hard to stop because you want that wining feeling
Gambling ruins lives last year September I wasted £65,000 chasing peanuts.
Brilliant always liked Paul as a footballer and a person, Paul in any interview is never embarrassed about his problems
Thank you Jeremy. My producer and I were taken aback with how open Paul is
What a diamond Paul is
One of the most financially killing addiction as you can keep losing constantly and with drugs you can only take so much
Found peace within yourself 😊
Mission to stop after watching this. Needed this 🙌
Do it.
This is the trouble, too many Mersons and not enough Le tissier’s !
Exactly
"If you have a couple of warnings you pull it in". No way! Matt should be commended for prioritising the truth over his career. The level of ignorance amongst the general public is amazing. Please, please, please do some bloody research and In time you might realise 'your friend' was only trying to make you aware of evils at play.
Did you see the interview I did with Matt Le Tissier?
Myself being a gambling addict for 28 years even if you recover which is rare, living with the shame of it and the normality of life is a huge challenge. But it's better than the highs and lows of being addicted. Time eventually will heal gradually over time if you stay the course of recovery. Just don't quit quitting and refuse to die what ever happens. Keep trying folks til you suceed.
What a great and vulnerable share thank you David
Great advice David.
Its easier not to have money than to have money...very true for an addict
Good interview and Merson always tells it like it is. Reckon using F#*k as a response every few minutes is abit much tho.
I’m a compulsive gambler and my life has been hell. I to realise I’m sick. It’s a hard confession but i know the first bet leads to 50
