    I was on a punk rock concert yesterday when something hit me straight in the head, rather painfully, bounced and I caught it mid air. It was a 1989 Zippo. Almost as old as I am. Took it home. It was full to the point of dripping when upside down but didn't light up and smelled like a kerosene cleaner (the hard to ignite kind with additives that people use to clean motorcycle chains). Both wick and cotton were yellow (as in: very old) but also kind of hard (as in: someone was using bad fuel over the years, I guess?). I think it's still the first wick that lighter came with although it's very short. Thanks to your video I just fixed it with twine and cotton pads (makeup cleaning kind). Filled it with proper flammable kerosene and it works flawlessly. 😂 I was never into Zippo lighters, I don't even smoke, but I think I found a new hobby.

      I am really liking the rose gold Zippo. So much so that when/if I see that Zippo finally releases ones in armor I'd purchase two immediately. Rose gold really is an awesome looking and durable finish. It's become my daily use lighter that I carry on me.

    Yes it's TRUE that out from the box some Zippo Inserts aren't packed properly. 1 of my Zippo insert was terribly packed it's obvious just by looking at how the felt looked & the cotton under the felt. The other 2 inserts I have I didn't bother repacking since they work just fine & looked fine. I followed the "Don't fix if it's not broken principle" on the other 2 inserts. 😊

    I’ve found that it’s either hit or miss with them. My 41 was the best quality I have seen from a brand new lighter. The fluid lasts a very long time in it, and I’ve only snipped the wick once since I got it. It was packed very well for some reason. The quality has really gone down, it’s a shame. Still usable and good quality, but not what they used to be.

  • @bernardtan1
    @bernardtan1 Před 2 lety +7

    The key is HOW TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE TOO MUCH COTTON in your insert. I tried pharmacy cotton & overpacked my insert since it's not like the Zippo wadding pack that has pre-measured amount of cotton already. Using 3rd party cotton tends to make you place too much cotton in the insert. Some people think having more cotton allows you to store more lighter fluid in the Insert. Learning to know what's just enough cotton (wad) probably is learned thru trial & error.

    What you first pulled out of there was inexcusable. And i have found the packing on some of my newer users inconsistent. Excellent method of repacking in my opinion. Funny, on my '01 solid titanium that i used multiple times daily at work from '03 until 2016, i pulled up the wick once and trimmed it. Only thing i did in all those years save for routine cleaning of the chimney and wheel and burnishing outside of chimney with a bronze gun cleaning toothbrush. I just got around to rewicking it a few months ago. I got all kinds of chemicals on that titanium case and of course there was no effect whatsoever; which is why i was using it at work in the first place. Actually i did have Zippo replace the hinge pin when i retired though, it was toast. Damn lighter still looks new though except bead blast is worn completely smooth. It's beautiful.

Was planning on intentionally packing one like that after having fixed it just to see but haven’t got around to it.

    • @frogbear02
      @frogbear02 Před 2 lety +1

      the reason i think it lasts longer to have it packed like they do, is because the wick isnt wicking up as much fluid, so you get less loss from wick evaporation. its the same problem with using charcoal lighter fluid vs gasoline. gasoline is easy to light, but thats because it gives off more fumes from evaporating fast. but charcoal lighter fluid lasts so long because it dont evaporate as easily... but that makes it quite hard to light.
      its always a trade off

    I never knew they are packed so badly these days. I just opened up a new old one from the late 80s early 90s at best. It's not marked the same as this one maybe cos its Canadian. I know it cant be any newer than early 90s because its enameled with a City of Sydney crest and the City of Sydney ceased to exist in 1996 cos of one of those misguided amalgamation deals. It has a reverse stamp on the bottom.
    But it did not come packed like your new one. Whoever packed it did it right like you did. But why do they come like that? It doesn't take an iota more effort to do it right in the first place. I'm not a collector like yourself. I like Zippos because they always work, some can be pretty classy, for a good lighter they are hardly expensive but mostly because they are simple mechanical thing. But most simple mechanical things need a little bit of setup when you start. Geez Louise though there is no excuse for sending it out like that.
    Anyone who actually smokes with the thing isn't gonna like how it works. And if he doesn't know to watch something like this he is apt to say Zippos suck. They absolutely do not suck but the way they come from the factory these days sure does.
