  • Today we're doing a product review for a very cool little gadget that vacuum-seals mason jars. I seal all manner of dry goods in mason jars, and in the past I have always used my FoodSaver machine with a jar attachment. But I got one of these small, quiet, battery-powered machines, and I want to see how well it performs. So in this video, we're going to do an unboxing and full test run of the "Love Moment" brand electric jar vacuum sealer.

    I've had one for a few months now. Works pretty well, and does not need to be charged a whole lot. A tip though, make sure you put some kind of template paper towel that would fit opening..I just cut some circles out to fit...that way you don't need to worry about clogging the motor, which if happens, just blow out the opening to motor. It only takes about 40 seconds to seal.

    FYI. When operating, as the pump evacuates air there is less and less air in the jar that the pump has to push out so there is less load on the motor and it speeds up. When the sound levels off the pump has reached its maximum vacuum and you can shut it off. My knowledge comes from working for a manufacturer of fractional horsepower compressors and vacuum pumps for over 30 years.

So I read the instructions and somewhere it said to turn off at just over 40. Haven't had any more trouble with it and I've done about 25 jars with out a recharge. Really like it for the price. 9-5-2023 Purchased on Amazon and using 1st time this morning. Make sure your dry ingredients do not go over the first ring on the neck of your jar (in other words, DO NOT overfill). I'm letting my unit run to 60 and have not one single jar "not seal". I'm sealing the jars I had sugar, flour, salt, powdered milk and dry beans in already sitting on my canning rack. I am pleased with this product, however, with that being said, I never tried any other device and have no comparison except just screwing a lid and ring over the jar. Canning is the most amazing thing you can do for the health of your family!

    How long can those dry staple jars be kept in a garage clost? Also, wiould this work for preserving wet items like stovetop canning methods do?

    • @GreatLakesPrepping
      @GreatLakesPrepping  Před 8 měsíci +3

      As for how long, it depends on temperature. If stored in a dark, consistently-cool place, they can last for years. Decades even. In a hot garage, much less. In a garage that's prone to freezing, you may have other issues. But temperature fluctuation and extreme highs or lows will not be great.
      As for canning wet foods like this, no you definitely cannot. This can't replace hot water or pressure canning for wet things. Your wet food would spoil just as fast as if you left it out in a bowl on the counter.

    I got one of these about a year ago and changed over to mason jars (from the washed out plastic soda/pop bottles with just oxygen absorbers). I still had a couple of the pop bottles that were done about 2 years ago, after I ran out of the mason jars. I've seen other reviewers saying this model does not keep the seal very well. I went to my storage area and found that about half of the mason jars I'd vacuum sealed with this had lost the seal and the lid came right off with no effort at all. Even the pop bottles were still sealed. My guess is this is good for REsealing (in smaller jars) dry goods that go in your kitchen for short term usage.

      You can, and it may keep your veggies fresher for a bit longer in the fridge than if you just put them in regular tupperware. Just keep in mind that the food is not considered "canned", and this method doesn't preserve them at all in the same way as real canning would. Generally speaking, vacuum sealing a jar is mainly useful for 100% dry foods, like rice, pasta, etc.

      You can use any regular mason jar lid (the kind that go along with the separate metal rings). Though there are some low-quality lids out there that may be prone to fail under any type of use, generally-speaking you can use any lid of that style with this machine.

      That seems surprising that all of the jars lost their seal overnight. It makes me question the quality of the lids, or if the tip rim of the jars had any kind of dust or moisture on them. Actually.... were you buy chance sealing jars full of flour or other powder? I've had that happen before, using my regular vacuum sealer machine, when trying to seal powder. Some particles of powder get trapped in between the jar and the lid, and it fails after a few hours.

    OK. Weve been canning for decades, i guess the old-fashioned way (heating them up in the oven, lids and fastening ring partiality on, then tightening them all on and letting them cool off, until we hear the lids pop), so I've never even seen a hand-pump way either. How does this even work? We do soups and Spaghetti sauces. Anything dry we trow in a vacuum sealer bag.

    • @GreatLakesPrepping
      @GreatLakesPrepping  Před 11 měsíci +4

      Hi Nicole. This device is strictly for sealing dry goods in a mason jar. Rice, grains, dehydrated vegetables, etc. It's just an alternative to vacuum bags. For years I have used a jar attachment that works with my regular food saver machine. This little gadget is just a more compact version of that, and it would probably be great for people who don't already have a foodSaver machine and only want to dry-seal jars and not bags. For your wet stuff (sauces, etc), you must continue to use heat-sealing (and while some people use your oven method, but it's still not officially considered safe, whereas hot water bath or pressure canning are the recommended methods, depending on what you're canning).

    I just got one of these and mine doesn't seal ANYthing. Looking at yours, it seems to have a rubber gasket, but not sure. I know mine doesn't have any kind of gasket and with the regular lid ring in place, the opening is too big for a WIDE mouth jar! After a total of four attempts totaling 4 minutes and 15 seconds, I still had a perfectly, entirely UNsealed jar. Device makes the noise, counts the time, charges up; it just doesn't seal anything. Can you clarify whether your device has rubber gaskets inside the rings? Mine also arrived without the lids in the cord box, so I know this belonged to someone else before me.

    Perhaps the people who got only four jars sealed before having to recharge the machine let it keep going until it stopped like the vacuum sealer does (that's assuming that this machine does, in fact, eventually stop on its own). Have you since let it run longer to see if it does stop on its own, or do you still just let it run for about 40 seconds? I really like the fact that the vacuum sealer stops when the jar has all the air out and is sealed. I'm wonder if, or how much, air is left in the jar with this machine. I don't know about this gizmo. I think I'll stick with the vacuum sealer. However, you did a great job on the product review, Great Lakes!

      The vacuum sealer doesn't auto shut off. You have to vacuum 40s and then push the button again to shut it off. I have one and I love it.

    Will this work for liquids as well or only dry goods?

    • @GreatLakesPrepping
      @GreatLakesPrepping  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Only 100% dry goods. Storing liquids this way would be no different than setting a cup of liquid out on your counter. It will spoil almost immediately and be very harmful. For "wet" foods, you have to use heat canning (either hot water or pressure, depending on the wet thing you're canning).

      I’m using to make vanilla extract. I’ll check frequently but in my case beans are stored in vodka. If it weren’t sealed, in this case, it would still last indefinitely because it’s in alcohol. I’m just trying to speed up the process.

    Has anyone else had problems with this machine cracking their jars? It seals and as it’s approaching the end of the cycle you can hear a crack. I didn’t think anything of it at first and continued using it day after day and hearing the crack every now and then, till it finally hit me that sound is the jar cracking. Was curious if anyone has encountered the same problem.

    • @GreatLakesPrepping
      @GreatLakesPrepping  Před 3 měsíci

      I've never observed that. Are you sure you aren't hearing the lid popping (or rather, un-popping) as it seals?
      I regularly seal jars with a much more powerful FoodSaver machine. It has suction WAY stronger than this little battery-powered machine, and I've never had a jar crack from it. I've also put jars inside a chamber vacuum machine, and no cracking. It would take an incredible amount of suction to crack a standard mason jar. It seems practically impossible that that's what you're hearing, not to mention that you'd absolutely see cracks in the glass.

    Marijuana? How long does it stay fresh?

    • @GreatLakesPrepping
      @GreatLakesPrepping  Před 5 měsíci

      If you're storing 100% dried out marijuana, it'll last for a long time just the same as when you put it in the jar. Probably years. I don't know much about marijuana, and I have no idea if it's meant to be absolutely dried out. If that's the case, I really don't know how long it would be good for stored like this.

    • @GreatLakesPrepping
      @GreatLakesPrepping  Před 11 měsíci +6

      Right, but if it comes unsealed, you'll want to know about it. Leaving the ring on can make it easy to miss the fact that you've got an unsealed jar whose contents are going to spoil much sooner. Same reason we store our heat-canned jars without the rings.

    Is it even better to screw on the ring, some folks leave it as is

    • @GreatLakesPrepping
      @GreatLakesPrepping  Před 6 měsíci +1

      It's generally advised to leave the rings off after canning because you will always be certain that it's still sealed. If the ring is in place, and the lid's seal fails at any point, it won't be as obvious. With dry sealing, I find this rule to not be as crucial, but I usually leave them off anyway because surface rust can form on the rings and I don't like that getting on my lids.

    • @GreatLakesPrepping
      @GreatLakesPrepping  Před 3 měsíci

      Definitely not. You can only vacuum seal completely dry foods (rice, pasta, etc). Anything wet must be heat canned (either hot water or pressure, depending on the food). Vacuum sealing pasta sauce and leaving it at room temperature will be no different than un-sealed pasta sauce left out on the counter, with regards to food safety.

    Did the math for everyone. With him sealing 7 jars and the battery went down to 88% that means roughly you can seal 50 jars at 100%.
    Giving yourself some room for error and common sense of when you might remember to charge it again. Most of us might seal around 30 jars before we even consider to remember to charge it.
    Hope this helps everyone. Temu sells these for $20 btw. That’s why I went to CZcams to check real use.
