- Excited to share my thoughts on the t-fal optigrill.
Check out the recipes on gastrofork.ca and also here:
Miso Marinated Sablefish
1/4 cup mirin
1/4 cup sake
1/3 cup miso paste
1/3 cup granulated sugar
6 sablefish fillets with skin on
Mix the mirin and sake together in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Add the miso until smooth, then add sugar and cook over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved. Transfer the marinade into a bowl.
Wash fish then pat with paper towel to absorb moisture. Coat the marinade on both sides of the fish, or submerge into marinade. You can keep this overnight, but still works well with 1 hour marination.
Prep your T-fal OptiGrill to the Fish setting. When it’s ready, place the fish with skin down and cook until rare-medium. Check every couple minutes to make sure it does not overcook depending on thickness of your filets.
Serve with hot rice.
Filipino BBQ Pork
2-3 pounds of pork shoulder or pork butt, sliced into easy to grill pieces
2-3 chilli peppers, chopped
1 head of garlic, chopped
1 cup vinegar
1 cup soy
salt and pepper
Marinate all ingredients, at least for an hour (if not overnight).
Prep your T-fal OptiGrill to the Steak setting. When it’s ready, place pork evenly on the grill and cook fully.
Serve with hot rice.

Great review. I will definitely consider buying one of these although I am looking at the XL version.
Half my family likes the steak medium rare, the other half are dead to me
Excellent review
I am going to get one 😊
Thanks fellow canadian😊
nicely done thanks for sharing!
thanks for watching Howard! ^_^
I’m not paid to endorse this! I’ve had mine for 2 years and it is one of the best investments I’ve made 🥂
nice review
great review
Thank you! :)
Tanks ...
So how do you get one fixed ? Mine is way past warranty. Any button I push automatically goes to manual.
If you do vegetables and steak separately would the veg be cold?
She missed the most important part of the OptiGrill. The grill also cooks frozen meats no more waiting to thaw. Great investment, take care of it n it will last
+John Seo Hi John, thanks for your feedback - I didn't know that you could cook frozen meats on it. I've only used the opti-grill 2-3 times since I bought it, so I'm surprised it's not working - it's an electrical issue that was resolved when I contacted them.
how's the cleanup afterwards?
Sweet jesus those meat juices are
For vegetables is the M Button not the Sandwich Button and for pork the sausage button
Good job :)
thanks friend!

You have had this grill now for a good few months now, how is it holding up? Also, were you finally able to perfect the medium done steak with it? I'm thinking of getting one.
+lordoftheflings I'm sad to report that it is broken! It wont get past the warming stage, so I'm hoping to take it back in and get a new one. For the medium done steak, I take it out at the 'rare' phase but I open it up to double check every so often. The grill fares a lot better for grilling fish, barbecue and paninis/sandwiches. Hope that helps!
I haven't had an issue with mine had it about a yr now maybe more give or take. just take care of it n it will last
+Asa Lowe its true! I had mine replaced and I still love using it!
I found that it is best not to use auto settings at all but cook on manual on the highest temp, just keep checking the donness.
That's what I've been having to do, my opti-grill only cooks on manual now (but it works pretty good!).
Mine too
Gastrofork Try recalibrating the grill to get auto to work again. There are CZcams videos addressing this issue.
@@gastroforkable hey gastro, can you give an update on the optigrill? Have you had any issues with it since the video?
Yes! It still doesn't work, only on manual mode which is fine for me I guess. Not sure if it's a common issue amongst other optigrill users but I'd probably get the manual version of the new optigrill xl which is cheaper!
Does the fat drip from the top plate when you open it? I have another grill and it drips fat from the top plate and the fat ends up where it is hard to clean :-( I wonder how the Optigrill is on that issue.
I don't find it drips too much from the top when I open it, it drips out most of the fat when it's closed. Hope that was helpful!
can you place the grill plates in the dishwasher??
Paul Donald you could but they don't advise you to as they're nonstick!
What do you use to clean the grill
You can take the bottom and top grill plates off, I wash them with gentle dish soap and water!
Hello there, how long did it take to cook the steaks? 5 mins for preheat, and then how many for medium-rare and cooked like you showed in the video?
Hi there! I just bought it today (the xl model), I have already cooked chicken and the time needed was rediculous!!! I had boneless chicken thies and it took 4 minutes to preheat plus 10 minutes to cook! It measures the hight of the meat and adjusts the cooking time. I would guess no more than 20 minutes for a medium rare stake.
@@vanatsakou7773 thank you~
Actually my Opti-Grill XL does steak to medium in about 4 minutes, and I’ve done a lot of 1 1/2 inch steaks on it. If someone’s machine is taking longer then it’s broken.
Oh man, don't poke the steak when you take it out! My pet peeve :)
Also, when you set it to medium I guess the grill doesn't know how thick your steaks are? That could have a huge impact.
It does apparently, there is a sensor on the hinge site, so it knows the exact thickness. Friend of mine uses it for two years now, calls it "The Beast" and says it's the best kitchen appliance he ever bought.
It has a thickness and temperature sensor. Her cuts were uneven which is obviously a noob error
Looked like there was a lot of grease flying all around the grill. None the less, i might buy this, surely it's better than my 20€ sandwitch grill.
Still im frying my steaks in coals or in a cast ironpan.
Often thought about getting one. Too expensive, will stick with my halogen oven.
never heard of a halogen oven, will have to look into it! :)
You can get a Hamilton for 1/2 the price and use your own judgement to cook the steak. Read the reviews. People complain the grill does not last and the auto cook is not reliable. No thank you I rather have a grill that I can set my own temp.
It has manual options too
What about energy consumption?
it's not too bad for energy consumption (it's never been a problem for me anyway!)
All those juices wasted in the tray.
I thought you was suppose to use some oil on the grill or light coat on the food when you cook?
How is this for meat that has bone like say chicken thighs that still has the skin as well?
This is the small version in the video right?
i know! the only downfall with it. you don't have to put oil, as it's nonstick, but you can if you want to!
If you cook pork you should choose the sausage button
this grill seems like it drains more fat from having much higher ridges compared to the george foreman.
+Gin81593 it does! My catch tray gets pretty full!
Gastrofork awesome, ill probably get one to replace my george foreman. This looks like it cooks so much better and removes more fat
Problem with this machine is all the fat that giving the taste to the meat being poured out. In a traditional way of cooking steak, you even sear it with butter to give extra taste. And its not a good idea to mix different types of meat where taste and smell being mixed up.
That's not a 'problem' with the grill, that's how it's designed, and it's why many people like it. Less fat.
I will agree that a traditional grill is better, because the fat burns on the charcoal, or super-heated coils or burners below. That charred fat evaporates, and flavors the meat on the grid. This grill does not do that, but fries the meat on a grid instead. I have found that this machine does a great job in a pinch, when weather does not permit grilling outside. It's good for something quick, when I'm in a hurry. If you get this, just don't toss out your regular outdoor grill!
what song ?
It's our custom track made by Jeremy Lim, you can find him on CZcams under JeremyLimMusic !
Looks like the steak is broiling (steaming) at the same time. Suitable for fish to cook this way, not steak.
Are you supposed to cook pork well done cuz it turned out to be really hard and chewy...
It doesn't have to be well done, you can also choose a different cut of meat so it's less tough
Medium quality contact grill, with a high quality price.
Get a high end grill, same price, but you have to practice, where this is more automatic, although the end product is inferior.
Its too expensive for me.. and I even like the sound it makes...😥
If you have made pork so I can see that you used the wrong program..Du should have spent sausage maybe :-) ..
+Dan Becker I think you're right! I'll have to try it on sausage next time! Thank you Dan.
Pork should be made on sausage program. Veegetables on manual.
How about cleaning?
I find it a bit difficult to clean - you can take both grills off and put into the dishwasher (as suggested by t-fal), but I prefer handwashing it. The difficulty lies in getting all the grease off the grooves!
Then use a dishwasher as Tefal suggest?? Comes out spotless every time.....unless you don't have a dishwasher??
Medium rare is cooked. Well done is burnt ha!
Pretty much 🙃
Pork is steamed, not grilled! Really dissapointed. And how can you mutilate beef meat in this piece of s...! I did not try fish or vegetables
It's just a sandwich maker, calling it anything alse it's irrelevant
