  • The ROG Strix XG27AQ is a 27" 1440p monitor with an IPS panel and a refresh rate of 170 Hz. It's more of a premium offering, but can it justify its price?

Really impressed with the quality of these videos, you are a really great reviewer! I don't know if this is the place to give some recommendations for review but the Viewsonic Elite XG2405-2 is a new iteration of the Viewsonic Elite XG2405 (which had the AOC panel and minimal backlight bleeding) seems to have gotten a new (and probably better) panel, and hasn't gotten many reviews. I can only get some colour performance metrics online (120% sRGB, 85% NTSC) which seem promising, but can't get any other info about contrast and ghosting etc.(except the typical manufacturer numbers). Would be really happy if a review was to come out since the price seems competitive with other great monitors of its range. Keep up the good work!

Upd. for some reason, on my monitor your ICC profile produces distinct artifact-y lines (which I wouldn't really call banding lines) in lagom's grayscale gradient test, so I'll stick with RTING's icc for now. And yeah, I know that ideally you should calibrate yourself

You should retest ELMB Asus monitors some of them provide different strobbing clariness when having g sync/ adaptive sync ON/OFF so by disabling and leaving only the strobbing feature you will prob have more of a clear image. Is quite more difficult to have both at the same time and compete with other monitors.

I recently bought this exact monitor brand new a couple days ago on amazon for $299, I say it is well worth the that price. This is my first 1440p monitor and my first IPS monitor. I came from a 1080p LCD monitor and the differences are astronomical. I just came from Techless' "Can You Calibrate a Monitor WITHOUT a Colorimeter?" video because I though the colors were too vivid for my taste. I followed all the suggestions in that video and I'm blown away by the visuals. Funnily enough, I decided to see if anyone had any color profiles/settings and found this video. I actually prefer the "DIY" look from "Can You Calibrate a Monitor WITHOUT a Colorimeter?" vs the settings mentioned in this video. But like you said, it is all subjective. YES the speakers actually sound like a cheap phone was playing inside a tin can, it is embarrassingly bad. Unfortunately, one of the reasons I bought this monitor was because of the built-in speakers. None of my previous monitors had speakers so I thought it was a good selling point along with the other features; please, do not buy this monitor for the speakers.

FYI - I could overclock my XG27AQ to 170 Hz (no flickering), but this locks the memory clock on Nvidia graphic cards at max rate causing very high idle temps. If you overclock to to any other lower setting it will unlock and idle temps goes down to the normal value. Also at native 144Hz it will unlock the memory clock. This was a very unpleasant surprise that I can't use 170Hz without idle temp going up on GPU to the level that Zero RPM mode can't be used since it will start/stop the fans every 5-10 seconds when the temps go above 50-55C.
I also have a hard time to find the best settings regarding gaming. At 170Hz Gsync + ELMB looks sharp but it feels not natural. It feels way better with ELMB off and add Dynamic Dimming instead. But that only looks great in games, it's a hassle to switch off every time for office use. But there is a third option that maybe looks and feels the best, 120Hz with Gsync+ELMB works great and looks great. But what the heck, I just paid a lot of money to have that 170Hz monitor...

Hi @techless, thank you for this professional review - this is a monitor I was looking into purchasing for gaming but also 2D/3D graphics, so fps/response times but also color accuracy are all equally important to me.
Unfortunately most professional graphics monitors seems to be capped at 60Hz, so this seemed to be the best compromise I could find.
With that in mind, do you happen to know of another 27' 1440p that also happens to be a better fit for a gaming/graphics mixed usage? ^ _ ^

0:18 Nice! Great review! I was hoping someone would cover ELMB-Sync on the XG27AQ, mostly to see if ASUS had made improvements since the VG27AQ and the VG279QM. Guess not. VRR + strobing seems... difficult, and the way these manufacturers are currently doing it isn't actually offering any clarity benefits, which makes me question why they're even offering it in the first place. LG recently removed the feature from their 27GP850 because they weren't happy with it (rightly so!), and while Gigabyte also offers Aim Stabilizer Sync, pursuit shots of the M32Q suggest that they're doing something extremely similar to what ASUS did way back on the VG27AQ, which completely falls apart at lower framerates.
So no good news about VRR + strobing :(
BTW, can I ask what DPI/mouse sensitivity you were using in Smooth Frog? I'm curious if you can tell a difference when using ultra high DPI + ultra low sens.

Hey a5hun! First off, Smooth Frog is awesome - thank you so much for releasing it for free! I'm using 0.6 sens with 1000 DPI. I've yet to test different DPI/sens combinations. So far it felt very smooth.
Absolutely agree on what you said about strobing. Most monitors should really offer no strobing mode at all considering how badly they perform. That's much better than including trash modes just to have something to print onto the box.
I'm really hoping for someone to finally make a good strobing mode that works with adaptive sync. I'm pretty sensitive to tearing...

I just set my XG27QA to 170hz but never received any warning about flickering? Could it potentially be a power source issue where if the monitor detects lower than optimal voltage it provides that warning but otherwise does not? I'm just wondering why I wouldn't receive a warning there. I haven't noticed any flickering in game or a major draw back to noise level or texture quality. I am using a 3080 12900k combo so it is plenty to run 170hz at 1440p, would it possibly be an issue with older (but still very good) hardware rather than current gen stuff?

I recently bought the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ1A monitor, and I am curious how similar it is to this one. I bought the VG27AQ1A on sale for € 328, while the XG27AQ is over double the price at € 650. XG27AQ is definitely very overpriced in my country.
From what I hear the VG27AQ1A and the VG27AQL1A should have very similar screens. There are no ICC profiles out there for the AQ1A, but I tried out the one Rtings made for for the AQL1A and got very good results. I don't think it's perfect, but definitely a lot better than the pre-calibrated colors. So I am wondering, how do you access the factory/ service menu? • @crimson_red
      @crimson_red Před 2 lety +1

@Josh Cabrera Mendoza Glad my question could be of help! Sadly, I am most likely going to return my VG27AQ1A soon :/ My unit is way too pink on white hues, even after installing RTINGS' ICC profile for it :/ The monitor was badly calibrated out of the box. The ICC profile and the recommended settings that RTINGS provided definitely improved the screen drastically, but it still has that red/ pink tint on white hues.

I want my screen to be as color accurate as possible, so this is just not acceptable for me. Besides the color inaccuracy, I absolutely love it! So it's a damn shame that ASUS cannot get their colors right, it's a good monitor otherwise imo. I might have been unlucky and received a defect unit though. So you might receive a monitor with better color accuracy. But I have no idea honestly. I have been in contact with ASUS about it, but I am yet to receive a response.
300 USD is definitely a good price though! Hopefully I can find a good monitor to replace it for a good price on Black Friday! Maybe you should wait until then too!
I made a post about my problem with the VG27AQ1A on r/Monitors on Reddit, where I compared it to a Nintendo Switch and an iPad Pro screen. It looks really bad lol! I will try post that link below in another comment, but it might be removed automatically by CZcams. So please let me know if you don't see that link!

The only problem I have with this monitor I have so far is the bottom plastic part on the front. it feels really cheap and is easy to bend and what not, I will spend a week with the monitor and if I don't like it, it's going right back to microcenter

The only problem on my unit is the little white/dead pixels (18 in my first unit/ 5 in my second) and the ips glow. I really hope that Asus keep all that packaging money and redirect to the Quality control area.

This on is on sale with 400€, which is 100€ lower than earlier in my country. I have only GTX970, so I can go only between 60-120fps in games I play. This would have G-sync though, which many monitors are not supporting and my GTX970 supports G-sync, but not freesync. I currently have old and cheat 60hz monitor. I am buying new pc later, but it can take 1-2 years, because of the current GPU prices and DDR4 -> DDR5. I would like to let DDR5 improve a little before I buy it. I would like to have faster monitor, because playing fast paced games with current one gives me a headache. 400e for a monitor, which I cannot get all out of and which has poor blacks and has clouding, sounds maybe too much. Although, my current monitor is IPS too, so I don't think blacks would bother me that much. I had VA monitor on test and those deep blacks were kind of annoying also, because I am not used to those. I am wondering how close OLED screens are, if I have to wait 2 years to get new PC. It would be another 2 years with a bad monitor though. 400€ isn't that much.
