Let's be honest there is/not/never will be another song like it. I was 16 when this came out and I remember listening to it way back then in 1975 no autotune either, just pure raw talent from all 4 members. Yeah you missed that ship, but it's fun for folks like me as we enjoy watching the youngsters being exposed to greatness. There will never be another frontman and talented Freddie Mercury.

Scaramouch was a clown character in Italian operas, and the Fandango is a dance. Therefore, the specific verse within Bohemian Rhapsody is actually someone that is instructing or asking a clown to do a dance or a jig for them.

Oh yes, FreddieMercury wrote this and basically produced it. It was said to be “Freddie’s thing” by the rest of the group. It was recorded in 6 different studios, each did their piece, and none knew what to expect until Freddie had it finally out together. He knew in his mind what he wanted, somehow knew how to get them to do what he needed without them even knowing what it would eventually sound like. It’s a rock opera, btw.

Queen is a British rock band that was formed in 1970 and was comprised of:
Freddie Mercury - Lead vocals and piano
Roger Taylor - Drummer and vocals
Brian May - Lead guitar and vocals
    John Deacon - Bass guitar
Queen has released 15 studio albums, 10 live albums, 16 compilation albums, two soundtrack albums, 2 extended plays, 73 singles, and seven promotional singles.
Freddie's speaking voice fell in the baritone range but he delivered most songs in the tenor range. His known vocal range extended from bass low F (F2) to soprano high F (F6). He could also get up to tenor high F (F5). Freddie could escalate within a few bars from a deep, throaty rock growl to a tender, vibrant tenor, then on to a high-pitched, perfect coloratura, pure and crystalline in the upper reaches.
Plus he used subharmonics in a way that very few people can. Singing in a subharmonic register occurs when a singer's ventricular folds vibrate along with their vocal folds simultaneously. The effect produces a bass-heavy sound That subharmonic vibration also helped give him his “growl,” which he frequently used.
And his vocal chords simply moved faster than those of most people. Most vibratos (the oscillation between pitches that great singers employ, especially when holding a note) are between 5.4 and 6.9 Hz. Mercury’s was 7.04 Hz,
"Bohemian Rhapsody", which was released originally in 1975, is the creation of Freddie Mercury but he never told anyone what he was thinking when he wrote the lyrics. Freddie tended to write in metaphors so I would not suggest taking any of his songs literally. He wanted listeners to be able to apply to the song whatever meaning it had to them personally. Not what it meant to him.
BTW - Freddie did admit that "Bohemian Rhapsody" was composed of three separate songs that he had been working on but could not seem to finish. So he decided to mash them together, adding some transitions and bridges, and created "Bohemian Rhapsody".
"Bohemian Rhapsody" can be broken down into 6 parts:
Part I is the "Into". The video image shows the four members of Queen singing and harmonizing the lyrics of the "Intro" in A cappella. In reality, it is only Freddie's voice you hear on the recording. Freddie laid down 5 separate tracks of himself singing and harmonizing with himself. (FYI - multi-tracking and overdubbing runs rampant in Bohemian Rhapsody.)
Next is the "Ballad" portion of the song ('Mama, just killed a man'). Freddie had worked on it for years but the song never had a name. The other members of Queen tentatively titled it "Freddie's Cowboy Song". The lyricist Tim Rice (who wrote the lyrics for "Jesus Christ, Superstar", "Evita", "Aladdin", "The Lion King", ...) was a close friend of Freddie's and he believes this portion of the song’s lyrics were about Mercury confessing to his fans that he was gay.
The third section is the guitar solo. This is the only part of Bohemian Rhapsody not written by Freddie. Freddie told Brian that he wanted a guitar solo in the song and where he wanted it to fit into the song but left it to Brian to create. Brian wanted to have his guitar effectively sing a verse that would inject a different melody. He heard something in his head. He said that he could hear this melody and had no idea where it came from. That melody isn’t anywhere else in the song, but it’s on a familiar chord sequence, so it dovetails in quite nicely.
The guitar solo leads to the fourth section which is the "Operatic" section. Freddie not only loved Rock but he loved Opera. He was always fascinated with the idea of combining rock and opera. It took 3 weeks to record "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the "Operatic" section was much smaller when they began recording but Freddie kept adding to it.
Various lyrics in the "Operatic" section seem to refer to the band...
    * Freddie casts himself as Scaramouch, a stock clown of 16th-century Italian literature.
    * Galileo who was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer definitely refers to Brian (Queen's lead guitarist) who in real life is Dr. Brian May, who has a Ph.D.in Astrophysics.
    * Figaro refers to the Mozart opera, "The Marriage of Figaro" and it is a subtle way to reference Roger Taylor (Queen's drummer) who has a four-range vocal span (E2-E6) and was even frequently cited as hitting E5 in live performances. Freddie compared Roger's voice to a dog whistle.
    * The final reference of Magnifico is John Deacon (Queen's bass guitarist), who has not just a BSc but a First Class Honors Degree in Electronics. John is the creator of the "Deacy Amp". When Brian's homemade electric guitar (dubbed The Red Special) was connected through a treble-booster (an effects unit used by guitarists to increase the high end of their tonal spectrum) to the "Deacy Amp", Brian could produce sounds reminiscent of various orchestral instruments, such as violin, cello, trombone, clarinet, or even vocals from his guitar.
FYI - Fandango is a lively partner dance originating in Portugal and Spain, usually in triple meter, traditionally accompanied by guitars, castanets, tambourines, or hand-clapping. Fandango can both be sung and danced
Also, Bismillah is a phrase in Arabic meaning "in the name of God" or "in the name of Allah' that occurs at the very start of the Qur'an and opens the Basmala.
It is hard to realize that it is only Freddie, Brian, and Roger singing in the "Operatic" section (John never sang on the records). This was 1975, well before digital recordings and they were using 24-track analog tape. This made it necessary for the three to overdub themselves many times and "bounce" these down to successive sub-mixes. Some sections feature 180 separate overdubs!
The fifth section is the "Hard Rock" portion. In this section, Freddie sings angry lyrics addressed to an unspecified "you", accusing them of betrayal and abuse and insisting "can't do this to me, baby", before the final lines conclude with him singing, "just gotta get right outta here".
(FYI - the "Operatic" and the "Hard Rock" sections of BoRap were featured in a scene in the 1992 film Wayne's World, in which the main character and his friends headbang in a car to the rock part.)
In the sixth and final section, the "Outré", returns to the "Ballad" to close the circle of the song and ends with the sound of a Chinese gong.

Sassypaws, bravo to you, as long as I have been a fan of rock n' roll music, and various genres, and enjoyed listening to Queen's music while growing up and there is one thing I did not put together until you included it in your comment. Scaramouche, Galileo, Figaro and Magnifico, reference in the song now makes sense to me! For the longest time I didn't know he was referring to the band members, I find it very clever indeed! The entire song is a masterpiece, and I am glad we had the opportunity to see them live in concert last year in Los Angeles (minus Freddie) but to see Brain May and Roger Taylor do what they do best on stage with their talents is a wonderful thing to appreciate and experience in person!

Freddie Mercury had one of the best voices in rock history. I've been listening to this for almost 50 years, and I still don't know exactly what it means. They say he may have written this little rock opera as a way of coming out to his mom and dad as a gay man, in his own dramatic way. Freddie sort of did give himself a death sentence, as he died of AIDS in 1991.

I guess, by the way, that you have not seen the film "Wayne's World"? Because this features in it, and the head-banging moment is iconic. 👏👏👏 Great reaction!
Welcome to the Queen’s world! You can find a huge catalog of their amazing and versatile songs and stunning live performances. You can choose any of them you never won’t be disappointed. They wrote their own stuff in several genres from rock to jazz, to pop, etc. about 200 songs. Freddie Mercury never took singing lessons, but his powerful and emotional performances are still legendary.
There are several theories about the meaning of Bohemian Rhapsody, but Freddie never explained his lyrics and especially not this one, it remains his secret forever. Freddie had 3 unfinished songs and he put them together into this masterpiece. This was the first music video for promotional purposes. Why is it so famous? It was absolutely uniqe in that era, they played never heard harmonies, they multilayered the vocals (in the first part Freddie is hamonizing with himself), they created an operatic section and who else would have started with this line: "Mama, just killed a man". Pls, check out the live version at Montreal 81.

Great reaction. 👏 I love when young people actually get most of the song and appreciate the masterpiece it was, in 1975. Plus, Freddie Mercury’s voice will ALWAYS make you feel things, he can do it all, including opera. Brian’s guitar is legendary…he’s well known for his wonderful sound, he’s a master there. Rogers drumming is awesome, always. Johns bass guitar … the best. “Bismillah” is Arabic for “in the name of God”, and he’s asking in the name of God, let me go. It’s a trial, so to speak. The drummer has a great falsetto voice,he hit that high note. All their vocals are awesome, and in studio recordings, really angelic. Live performances are different, but just as good, if nit getter. Gotta check out anything live…they ere such a great team. Fabulous. Live Aide, the whole 20 minutes, is considered he best live performance ever. And Freddie had a throat infection there, but you must listen to it. Thanks!!

I enjoyed watching you enjoy this song/video reaction. Queen has a vast catalog of music for you to enjoy. I have read some of the well-informed comments from your other viewers below, this is a masterpiece, Freddie Mercury (Lead vocals) wrote it out years before he recorded it. the rest of the band is Sir Brian May (Lead Guitarist, vocals, big dark curly hair), when it comes to his guitar solos, do not pause, just listen to his entire solo and you'll see how he can make that guitar sing along with the song. Sir Roger Taylor (Drummer, vocals) he is the blonde-haired drummer, sings with high pitched vocals, also known as a falsetto singing voice, John Deacon (Bass Guitar) he may not sing in this song but a part of the song "Somebody to Love" he's seen singing along in the studio version of the song and video.
Since this is your first time with Queen, may I offer you a tip when it comes to listening to Queen's music?
*It is better to listen with headphones, always!
*It would also be better for you to listen to the studio version of the songs first, this way you don't miss out on any of the original sounds of the song that made it so special for us to listen to and you won't get that same satisfaction from a live concert but live is a bonus when the time comes for you to watch them.
*Once you have listened to many of the studio versions of their songs, then you can watch the live reactions to appreciate their natural talents and the way their stage presence captures the attention and love of their audience.
To continue with the 1970s hits like this one you can also listen to the studio versions of "Somebody to Love", " Another one Bites the Dust", "Play the game" "We Will Rock You", followed by "We are the Champions", "Killer Queen", "Under Pressure", (Queen/David Bowie), You may have heard of these songs but didn't know it was Queen singing them. some might be early 80s.
I may have missed some but those are a good start for now. You won't be disappointed! Looking forward to more Queen reactions from you! Take care of yourself. Peace. ☮

Love your reaction and welcome to the Queen rabbit hole. Roger Taylor the drummer is the one hitting those high falsetto notes. Freddie called him the dog whistle and said he could hit motes so high only dogs could hear him. One piece of advice (not a criticism) before the rest of the Queenies bite your head off...never EVER pause a Brian May solo! 😂

There is no real breakdown of the song because Freddie never said other than it was up to the listener to decide what it means to them. The acapella portion at the beginning is all Freddie multitracked on 16 or maybe 24 track tape. The rest is Freddie, Brian and Roger, John didn't like to sing. This song is a conglomerate of 3 songs that Freddie had started but never finished so he put them together as a rhapsody and this is the result. Many people have tried to say what this song was all about but considering that he initially referred to it as "The Cowboy Song" most of those stories are just their personal take on the theme of the song. I just love the song and accept it as an incredible composition by an exceptional musician. Brian still has that same hairstyle (his natural curl and thickness) but at 76 it is now white and not nearly as thick. Queen just came back from a tour of Japan last week. Freddie passed away in 1991 and John retired a few years later so now Brian and Roger tour as Queen + Adam Lambert who collaborates with them and sings the lead vocals. He is not Freddie and doesn't try to be Freddie, he brings his own style to his vocals but the band is still outstanding and sells out every concert in about 1 day. They still do stadiums that hold about 50,000 but back in the day they did even bigger stadiums sometimes as large as 250,000 - 300,000 in the audiences. Highest notes in this song are from Roger the drummer. You should listen or react to March Of The Black Queen, which was an earlier recorded song by Freddie but you can hear the groundwork for Bohemian Rhapsody in that song. I will usually say to do live with Queen because they are one of the best if not the best live band ever but March Of The Black Queen, like this song, is very layered and really was never able to be performed live so the studio version is the one to do. The live offerings are just a snippet of the song and nowhere near the whole elaborate song. It has changes and switches as well.

Freddie started writing this while in college. Tim Staffel, was a friend, classmate, and a band member with Roger and Brian, said he would often sing "Mama, just killed a man"...
Another friend said he believed it was based on Faust, who sold his soul to the devil. The center section, when the character is on trial facing the death sentence for murder, makes many operatic references. Freddie had a well developed interest in the arts, including opera, ballet, theater, artists of all sorts and incorporates references into his lyrics of several songs. Freddie has very different life experiences from the other band members and adds so much to the music. Born in Zanzibar off the coast of Africa and sent to a British style boarding school in India, moving to London as a teen during the Beetles, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones era of the 60's, his creativity just found the right place, the right band members at the right time. The rest is just great music.

  • @papercup2517

Don't worry, Freddie was from another planet; he just called in here for a few years to bestow his special blessing on struggling humanity, before returning to his beautiful home among the stars... I was lucky enough to meet him just before he and the band got famous; he was a sweetheart IRL, shy and funny and rather camp once he relaxed. I think it took him a little while to feel at ease with strangers (Earth bound mortals are pretty weird, after all...)
Another incredibly gorgeous, magnificent performance from these earlier days of Queen is:
White Queen - Live at Hammersmith Odeon, 1975(?)
The band is probably more widely known today for its later stuff after they became a big stadium band, playing for hundreds of thousands, one of the first bands to do so. By the '80s Freddie stopped painting his fingernails black, cut off his hair and grew a dramatic moustache, thus becoming a major gay icon, while still loved by all, of all persuasions.. And their most famous songs are songs you'll almost certainly have heard many times, but never knew who created them, like We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions, and Another One Bites The Dust. 🙂

Your journey down the Queen path cannot be complete without Bohemian Rhapsody. In fact, your journey into great MUSIC of the past cannot be complete without Bohemian Rhapsody!
Bohemian Rhapsody, was released in 1975 on the album "A Night at the Opera" which gives a hint as to the musical genre. Freddie Mercury (lead singer and pianist) was a huge fan of opera so this song was written as an operatic suite consisting of five distinct parts: an acapella intro, a ballad segment, an operatic passage, a hard rock section, and a reflective coda. Generally it is classified as rock-and-roll, but specifically as a "rock opera" and "progressive rock." Truth is, labeling any Queen song, or Queen the band, is next to impossible!
"Bohemian" describes an unconventional, artistic style with freedom and individuality as key elements. "Rhapsody" in musical composition refers to a single work comprised of episodic, diverse pieces arranged into a free-flowing structure designed to heighten emotions. This song came to be because Freddie had pieces of songs he never completed, so he put them together, each section totally different yet masterfully blended into a truly epic masterpiece. It is the band's magnum opus, and is unanimously considered one of the best rock songs ever written.
As for the meaning of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", Freddie was purposefully vague. As with most of the greatest songs, the lyrics are written to be poetic and mysterious. Are they literal or figurative? As separate pieces initially, should the song have a singular meaning? Who knows! The meaning is open to interpretation for each listener to decide, based on how the music and lyrics touches them. You will read comments claiming the song's meaning, but the fact is, the entire band has never stating a specific meaning and has been firm that there isn't one, or if Freddie DID have a specific interpretation, he never shared it. Any assertion of the meaning pertaining to Freddie's sexuality are speculative and because certain groups WANT that to be the meaning.

And yet it’s amazing that in spite of Freddie saying point blank that he wanted the listener to decide what it means there are so many opinions stated as fact. I generally listen to any reaction to Queen. I find it interesting to see how people react to the music today as opposed to when I first heard it in 1975. One thing you can be sure of…if you do Queen song reactions you will have a huge base of listeners. Freddie was so gifted and he is seriously missed. No one can compare

To echo everyone else, welcome to the world of Queen! I'm old enough to remember this when it came out in 1975 - I was 8 years old - and I've known all the words pretty much since it's first week in the UK charts back then! If you want a sign of how much this song means to the people of the UK, check out the 65,000+ Greenday crown singing along with this czcams.com/video/cZnBNuqqz5g/video.html&ab_channel=GreenDay completely spontaneously in 2018.
And yes, you absolutely must do 'Someone to Love' from Montreal 1981 next, and obviously Queen's Live Aid performance from 1985. Heck, just do loads of Queen! You can't go wrong with the album 'A Night at the Opera' to start with - their best album ever (which has Bohemian Rhapsody as the final track) but also 'A Day at the Races' and the amazing 'Teo Torriatte' (written by Brian) in which Freddie sings the chorus in perfect Japanese as a tribute to their huge Japanese fanbase.
Queen are amazing - that's it, really! No auto-tune, no gizmos, no nothing, just four guys who could make complicated, layered studio songs on vinyl sound almost exactly the same live on stage (e.g. to 'Someone to Love'!). The Queen rabbit hole awaits you!
