Venom's Black Metal and Bathory's debut album are a must listen to understand the evolution of black metal. Venom created the concept of Black Metal and Bathory created Black Metal as a music genre. Both bands share 50/50 as the creators of Black metal.
Another band that would be included would be AMEBIX. They carried the coldness and eerie atmosphere that countless of Black Metal bands would go on to carry.
Also I won't fail to mention the fact that Amebix and Venom often traded each other's tapes during the early days of their careers, which really allowed both bands to influence each other's sounds respectfully. The more you know.
This IMHO is the 1st true thrash metal album. It’s influence on Black Metal with its straight forward, fast, dirty, unpolished, abrasive sound (and imagery lyrics) were no doubt an influence on Black Metal as a genre. For those who say it’s not thrash, well Metallica and Megadeth debuts were pretty raw too.

I get what you're saying and I agree to a certain extent but to me, the first real thrash metal band was D.R.I....think about it, everybody was influenced by them...almost every metal band, they are they only band in that genre to create two distinctive generes the second being Crossover. Where they slowed down just a bit and really fused metal and trash, but Dirty Rotten is more than the blue print for thrash metal.
Nice to hear this in its entirety again. Takes me back to the summer of 1985 when I was a 19-year old working at Burger King in Phoenix. I got "Black Metal" about the same time I got Slayer's "Hell Awaits".
I clearly remember how we distinguished "THIS" new type of sound with what we called 'Metal,' such as Dio, Priest, Maiden, etc. We called it 'Speed Metal' before we called it 'Thrash (late 80s?). Venom, Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, and a few others are examples. Though Venom may have launched a thousand Metal sub-genres, to me this is Speed Metal (okay, Black too!). These guitar solos could fit with any genres. Venom needs a lot more credit.
As i Listen to the original Neat Records LP at the age of 16,it blew me away as a combination from sledgehammer/Bomb. Nothing changed my feelings/Taste in 40 years. Cover, Image, Songs, sounds killed me. Part of my Holy Metal Bible. Venom Masterpiece imo.
This came out a month after my twelfth birthday...and I was listening to Zeppelin, Triumph, AC/DC, ZZ Top, The Beatles, etc back then...so I missed out. I'd be a different person now had I not.
one thing I've learnt after experimenting with this genre (including all other metal subgenres) is that black metal isn't full of screeching, horrible quality, and barely legibile words. honestly if i hadn't known any better, venom, to me, would sound like a regular 80s band. knowing their prominence however changes this and my view on not only metal but black metal entirely as well. this is a kickass album. love venom 🤟

I prefer the more black metal-y side of first wave black, such as bathory's early albums. But nobody can take away Venom's enormous influence on black metal.
Fucking fascinating. From the first track there's an immediate admission that this is about the gods of Rock and Roll, and Rock and Roll had been denounced for over thirty years at this point as the Devil's music, the same as Blues before it. This record is necessary listening for anyone who wants to understand the place of not just Black Metal, but Blues, Rock, and *all* Metal in modern music history. Good music is apparently intrinsically tied to denying established values. Good music questions and denounces the status quo of its day. Otherwise, it's just bullshit pop about girls and cars.

Although I'm Japanese, I can understand the greatness of this band's music. I think this is a band that should be more appreciated in Japan.

I prefer the more black metal-y side of first wave black, such as bathory's early albums. But nobody can take away Venom's enormous influence on black metal.

Fucking fascinating. From the first track there's an immediate admission that this is about the gods of Rock and Roll, and Rock and Roll had been denounced for over thirty years at this point as the Devil's music, the same as Blues before it. This record is necessary listening for anyone who wants to understand the place of not just Black Metal, but Blues, Rock, and *all* Metal in modern music history. Good music is apparently intrinsically tied to denying established values. Good music questions and denounces the status quo of its day. Otherwise, it's just bullshit pop about girls and cars.
