They're not fast they're quick. The panther platform was designed for the highway and imo nothing is better for a long road trip than a cv/gm or the town car. One thing I love about the 4.6 is you don't have to rev the shit out of it to get going, heck I rarely take my gm over 2,000 rpm just driving in the city.
What amazes me is how good of gas mileage these heavy cars get! I get 30 mpg highway at 75 mph, of-course I have the 2.73 rear end so that helps. I've had my 2005 Grand Marquis for around six months now, she still brings a smile to my face every time I drive her. These cars have good power (no it's not a mustang), good gas mileage, plenty of legroom, soft suspension and rock solid reliability. There's just something about the panther platform that other cars don't have anymore.

The whining noise is the transfer case, there is little to no sound-deadening material between the tramsfer case and the floor of the cabin on these cars. That's why you can hear the whine more prominently in the CVPI versions and not in the regular CV's (as the regular civilian versions had sound-deadening there).

At around 4000rpm, the 4.6L Modular has a dead spot. This is present in Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Town Car, and Marauder. I believe the 3.27 makes this more apparent than a 3.55. Ford's 4.6L V8 never had the low end grunt typical of American V8 engines, a point made very obvious compared to the Chevy Caprice's LT1 5.7L V8 beloved by many officers and departments. Kenny Brown's P2 Panther supercharged the 4.6L and re-programmed the transmission, which resulted in a 0-60 time of 5.2 seconds. Goes to show the importance of torque.

I have two P71's. I cant really say that I "own them"........Im in a symbiotic realationship with them. The '02 is a fire breathing dragon. Its a cable throttle body thats hot from the start and keeps coming at you if you punch it like Chewbacca would. The '10 is a businessman with a resolved approach and loves to flirt at 90 mph and needs a goose to go over 100mph......but it will. BOTH will outlast most on the road at high speeds. they will catch up when steam is rolling out of a challengers' hood....but they will catch up.

be aware of something. my 2008 p71 made the same whinning noise. then my heavy duty alternator went out. i put a new alternator on and the whinning noise was gone. and the car runs fine
This is actually what the stock police interceptor exhaust sounds like, the reason why it is so loud is mainly due to the large Marauder style airbox, aggressive computer tune and the exhaust being true duals, having an h pipe and coming with deleted resonators all from the factory! These cars are beasts and last forever!!!
