Growing up skating in Sac, Matt was always a factor. In the nineties we used to run in to him all over the place and he was always ripping and always hella cool. Shout outs to Mike Rafter, Domingo Vasquez, Mako Urabe, Matt Pailes/Fields, Cardiel and of course the N Men.
This was my era. Post sloppy tech. Consistent, well popped tricks, longer/higher grinds...and more or less back to basics and just cursing while trying to put together legit, solid lines.
I remember 'Little Matty' buying my used Vision twin tail from me 92-93ish all excited like a fat kid gets excited after being told he won a life time supply of cake! Yep Little Matty was pulling 5"high ollie melons with it and begged me to sell it so I did lol.
That feeling when you realize Thrasher’s rereleased “Classic” videos on CZcams are now old enough to be considered classics themselves. Where does the time go?
Ahh, such simpler times. I always dug Matt's style. His board shapes were always a bit odd. But definitely one of Sacto's finest. Good stuff right here.
i find in parts like these i look at the tricks and think "yeah i can most of these ollies, half cabs and kick flips, not too bad" then look again and think "shit look how fast he is going.."
@ssflipallday it was all about the fun of skating in the 90's.. just skating and enjoying the rush.. you gotta appreciate that,if nothing else.. now and days, its all about tech, which is siick and i love it too.. but when i see dudes like wes kremer, martin kilian and black ninja.. I smile knowing their loving every moment..
I knew Matt was going to go places with his sk8in when we went to this rail @ a church and he did a bs big spin to fs fakie nosegrind 180 out @14yrs old(1990) Plus he was hilarious to hang n sk8 with, funny he used to make fun of us for puffin nugs look at him now
i only got to see this part once because i let my friend pj borrow it and he bloody lost it. what a berk. matt rides his trucks so effing loose. the hangers basicly dangle about like turkey gobblers
fun fact, Matt skates his trucks so loose you can shake it board and they rattle like a bag of change. you have yo activeley try to stay straight on them, its nuts
@joms654 Yeh ik i realized that after i posted that. Ill accept that though. And also, ik that this dude is a ledgend and all but this is in like 1996. I just like people from nows styles better. plus he is going realy fast so nvm.
i feel like in 90's parts theres always a few clips of just 180's on and off of curbs, like even in this video theres shit i cant do but i dont see the need for an extra 20 seconds of footage for just riding down a street
@Doctorj98vids this was back in the day, u know , b4 all the switch to switch something down a hadrail, nd the whole it has to look perfect or else it not "steezy" this shits og status, hes just hauling ass doing his thing, dont hate
Its called Mr Sunshine. Written by Dave Chavez. He played guitar. I sang it. Matt played percussion. Jay Frost played bass. We recorded it in Matt’s living room. Sacramento 1995.
It was our band called Pao. This was recorded in Matt’s living room. I have no idea where the original tape went. It was only released on the Stereo video Tincan Folklore
@dermannmitdernase lol i wasnt hating. he did do alot of switch tricks. i skateboard only... i got the name because an old guy told me and my friends to stop rollerboarding xD
@itsalljustasham why is everybody bringing up skating nowadays, when i was talking about how u didn't have be able to tre flip to get sponsored, and now u have to be be able to tre flip down a 7 foot gap. i waqs just saying what i noticed
Cardiel has a little cameo at 3:42 also doesn't he?
i love these classics videos, i love watching old skate videos, when it was about enjoying yourself on a skateboard.
I wish this song was on Spotify
Props to the camera man! :D
This was my era. Post sloppy tech. Consistent, well popped tricks, longer/higher grinds...and more or less back to basics and just cursing while trying to put together legit, solid lines.
Long live Matt Rodriguez!!! If this here is not enough to realize his greatness, check out his I Path promo part. It's off the hook.
so good!
what a fuckin beautiful part and music.
3:36 is possibly one of the coolest tricks ever
the filmer is a beast up a curb and up a 3 stair and hardly a wiggle in the footage
Respect to the filmer!
I remember 'Little Matty' buying my used Vision twin tail from me 92-93ish all excited like a fat kid gets excited after being told he won a life time supply of cake! Yep Little Matty was pulling 5"high ollie melons with it and begged me to sell it so I did lol.
He always went faster than 95% if the other dudes at the time.
Best dreads in skating too, totally righteous and pure.
Used to watch this video everyday, such a rad part!
That feeling when you realize Thrasher’s rereleased “Classic” videos on CZcams are now old enough to be considered classics themselves. Where does the time go?
Right? Thats so weird. It feels wrong especially considering they dont do classics anymore.
I always wanted some olive green with gum sole Jason lee AIRWALKS.........I wanna go back to 96!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The 90's Style is the best
Ahh, such simpler times. I always dug Matt's style. His board shapes were always a bit odd. But definitely one of Sacto's finest. Good stuff right here.
he looks so badass with that beard
back in the 90's backside 180's were the "go-to" trick
Dudes always been rad
Love Matt’s style! And all skating in ‘96 for that matter.
i find in parts like these i look at the tricks and think "yeah i can most of these ollies, half cabs and kick flips, not too bad" then look again and think "shit look how fast he is going.."
those sf hills r nothing to
play with lol
Thats my cousin!! Good ole days!!! The speed alone is fucking insane.. Omar Salazar reminds of Matt..
I like how the in the 90's just did lines that were tricks until they failed, they didn't seem to plan the lines
@mikeeofriel, the song was from a local band that we all skated with at the time, supporting the homies.
love the way he skates...

I knew Matt was going to go places with his sk8in when we went to this rail @ a church and he did a bs big spin to fs fakie nosegrind 180 out @14yrs old(1990) Plus he was hilarious to hang n sk8 with, funny he used to make fun of us for puffin nugs look at him now

i only got to see this part once because i let my friend pj borrow it and he bloody lost it. what a berk. matt rides his trucks so effing loose. the hangers basicly dangle about like turkey gobblers

crazy little backside180 at 2:38. Things can go pretty wrong turning backside at those speeds.
i feel like in 90's parts theres always a few clips of just 180's on and off of curbs, like even in this video theres shit i cant do but i dont see the need for an extra 20 seconds of footage for just riding down a street
this guy must have inspired duffel very much..
Mr. Sunshine just flows.
i think he really likes 180 ;D and sometimes the quality is quiet good
good old vx footy
@DudeSonMusic by tommy guerrero i think
back when skating didn't mean trying to tre flip the biggest stairset, or backside 360 that huge planter gap!
@legaCsk8er4 he didnt ollie up the 3 but yeah it was still steady
fuck this is lush! nothing finer than grainy 90s parts with flatland lines
who is first guy
Sactown's Finest.
he reminds me of dennis busenitz because of his speed
Wait, so is he M-Rod?
@lakaiskate86, and the tight gay jeans and pink shoes and sunglasses right?
@Doctorj98vids this was back in the day, u know , b4 all the switch to switch something down a hadrail, nd the whole it has to look perfect or else it not "steezy" this shits og status, hes just hauling ass doing his thing, dont hate

it was so easy to get sponsored back then
@MrLarsonfam dude! you can clearly hear the filmer get off and on the board again
man soooo many 180's lol but shit it was only 96
@thefaceplantman alot of spots in the skate games are recreated from real life spots.
@mariusmueller1996 : and probably clean his shorts after a few of those San Fran hill runs.
Must... go... FASTER!!!!!
This is what i call speed :)
@itsalljustasham why is everybody bringing up skating nowadays, when i was talking about how u didn't have be able to tre flip to get sponsored, and now u have to be be able to tre flip down a 7 foot gap. i waqs just saying what i noticed
