  • Originally released in 1971, Raga: A Film Journey into the Soul of India documents the life of sitar master Ravi Shankar in the late 1960s and early 1970s, following him on his return to India to revisit his guru, Bengali multi-instrumentalist and composer, Baba Ustad Allauddin Khan. It further explores Shankar's life as a musician and teacher in the United States and Europe, initiating those in the West to the exceptional world that is Indian classical music and culture. Through rare and candid footage shot in both India and the United States, Raga sheds light on Shankar's influences and collaborations, from Allauddin Khan to his famed dancer brother Uday Shankar, to his associations with Western musicians Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison. Fully narrated by Shankar himself, Raga reveals music as the soul of India and of Shankar's life. The premiere DVD release of Raga features a digitally re-mastered 35mm print optimized to modern color range resolution and standard and a fully re-mastered audio soundtrack.

People thought "drugs!" when really it was just intense emotional connection with the beauty in the sound of music.

During the Dick Cavett Show all George wanted to talk about was the movie Raga.

Of course, it was 1971 and just after the premier !
George was the first and the most important ever in the world to bring the Indian music to the western masses.
Cavett just wanted to ask about if George had met the other Beatles 😂😂😂😂

So amazing sound. Pt Ravi Shankar's contribution to take Indian music onto the world stage is unparalleled. We are still benefiting from his efforts. Collab of Yehudi Menuhin, George Harrison, Allah Rakha could be the meeting of some of the brightest minds of music. Ravi Shankar enabled that collaboration. Truly amazing.

It is a great documentary produced and directed originally, in 1971 by Mr. Howard Worth. I have known Mr. Worth for some time and he is a true genius. He has been working for over a decade now, on a Life Saving Technology, that will save many lives worldwide.
    Congratulations.

I agree that this is a totally mesmerizing film. I was in a meditative state through most of the film. If you're looking for the CD, I just read about an even better deal. A free download of the soundtrack is available when you buy the DVD of the film. What a fab idea - I hope it catches on with other films.

Someone below said a "jazz" audience would have been a better audience that rock audience for Shankar to be introduced to by Harrison.....uhhh....TRUE ...VERY PROFOUND THOUGHT. More sophisticated music for more sophisticated audience.

He was an unbelievable musician. The problem was Harrison tried to introduce him to a rock and roll audience which is like introducing veganism to McDonalds, it was stupid on his part. Instead he should have made deals with a jazz audience, classical music audience.

I wouldn't say it was stupid, since at the time Indian culture was very prominent in the psychedelic rock origins. Also being that most of George's songs have Indian influence.
