I know I'm just coming across this reaction, but that's because I love Disturbed and this cover reaction is making its rounds once again to a new crop of reactors!
I myself am an artist of words as well, but in the literary form.
However, I am unknown so my literary style is still fresh and new. I believe the world SHALL know of my writing soon mainly because of the depth and emotion it comes with!
That's all I have to say.
      HAPPY NEW YEAR!! 🎉

I think what always gets me about this performance is that David was sick as hell when they did this. Like, he was so sick that the rest of band was like, "Sure, we can do this, but you're gonna sit down for the performance because we don't want you to collapse on stage." And then the fucking studio execs or producers or whatever, slipped in just the TINY bit of autotune, and David was FUCKING PISSED about it. The man is a fucking lyrical treasure and if you ever get a chance to see 'em in concert, do it. Don't pass GO, don't stop to collect $200, just fucking see 'em.

A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to vocal fry/distortion and back on a dime. 5 years later and I still love watching people react to this epic performance. It was made greater by the fact that David Draiman was actually ill that day, yet still delivered a spectacular performance. The live orchestra also added to this incredible performance. Paul Simon, the song's creator, is said to have reached out to the band after this performance. Referring to it as the greatest cover of any of his songs, he posted the video on his social media so that his fans could share in this amazing version of a classic song. So popular has this live performance become that Conan celebrated it last year as the first video from his show to get 100 million views. An absolute classic for the ages, IMHO.

One thing to point out is that I got the feeling based on your comments that you may think this is their original song (how many times he's sung it in his career etc.) so you may want to look up the original by Simon and Garfunkle if that is the case. To my knowledge he only started singing their version shortly before this performance. Great reaction though! Thanks!

He almost canceled this show because he had a bad case of the flu, so imagine how much more power he could've added if he wasn't sick while doing this performance. Also, he remade this song in 2015 so it hasn't been that long

The Live performance on the Conan O'brien show is by far better than the produced music video version and it's been said that David Draiman was actually sick at the time of the performance, which if true only makes this version even more amazing.

David Draiman is unique in that he uses his voice in so many ways, whether it is as a percussion instrument, like in “Down With the Sickness”, or “Stricken”, to his more melodic head voice that we hear in “Prayer” or “Remember”. Then he pulled this out of his repertoire, and while we had seen hints of his pure vocal ability, and his ability to project a spellbinding performance out of a quiet song like this, this was his penultimate performance as a vocalist. And it came from his reverence for this song. It was interesting to note this performance was remarkable because David was recovering from a bout of the flu. Another fascinating fact that David revealed was this was the first song his father, an Orthodox Jew, ever heard him perform. Because it was written by Paul Simon. I found that fact particularly touching. Also, David Draiman works a log with other artists, produced Trivium’s “Vengeance Falls” album, as well as co-wrote many of the songs, and continues to be highly influential with other artists today. And by the way, Schnell, there is no “back in the day” for Disturbed. They continue to pound out hits, and continue to be hugely influential in metal and rock.
