15 Actors Who Auditioned For Harry Potter But Were Rejected

- Considering just how epic the Harry Potter franchise is and how memorable the movies are, it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing these iconic roles like the Boy Who Lived or any of the Weasley’s - but the fact is, lots of great actors auditioned for roles in the series but ultimately, faced rejection. There are a couple of different situations for actors who auditioned for the HP series - either they lost out on the role OR they were brought in at another time and considered for a different role, which they eventually performed on screen.
Tom Felton actually auditioned for two other lead roles before he landed the part of Draco Malfoy. Felton could have been the boy with the scar on his forehead or his best friend- Ron Weasley! Jason Isaacs actually almost didn’t even consider auditioning to play Draco’s father and once he got the offer, it actually took a family member convincing him to go for it! Eddie Redmayne took to the screen in Fantastic Beasts, but he’d actually been vying to play the role of a young Tom Riddle a number of years earlier. It didn’t work out since the audition wasn’t so great - though he never lost hope that he might be cast as a Weasley boy one day.
Thomas Brodie-Sangster has had an incredible career for someone without any formal training - and his life had a chance to turn out quite differently when he auditioned for the youngest Weasley boy, Ron. The rejection was actually an extremely pivotal moment for the actor. We’re covering all these and more to see just how different the movies would have been with different actors!

yeah i agree, but people always comment how old harrys parents were in the movies. but i dont think they realize that lily, the marauders, and snape are all supposed to be around the same age. if they casted people in there 20s as harrys parents in the voldemort baby harry scenes with snape walking through the house in the deathly hallows, it wouldnt look right. alan rickman was absolutley perfect- but he does not look likes hes in his 30s or something. since theyre all supposed to be the same age, i understand why they casted a bit older actors and actresses. no shade to alan rickman though, hes the perfect snape, but people dont get that theyre all supposed to be the same age though

He is literally the most obvious when you consider anyone else for the role, you could consider another actor for any other part except Rickman playing Snape.

I think Evanna is perfect for Luna. With dreamy face and adorable personality. She shows Luna actually a kind girl with talent, not lonely strange girl.

If you are into the androgynous boy archetype (a guy with both feminine and masculine qualities), then you’ll probably be into Pattinson, however if you are into alpha males (hyper masculine men), then Henry sure would be a better choice. I personally think both of them are really attractive dudes.

He didn’t have to play Ron, but now that I know he auditioned, I’m upset that Thomas Brodie Sangster didn’t get a small role. He would’ve made a good Colin Creevey, for instance. I agree that Saoirse Ronan really was too young for Luna. Evanna was the better choice.

Imelda Staunton did a great job of portraying Dolores Jane Umbridge. She was the best pick for the character. She was a phenomenal actor, we hated her character more than Voldemort lol and now she will be portraying Queen Elizabeth II on the Crown's Season 5 and 6.
She was an absolutely horrid character, and I love every scene she is in because of it! She should have been the main bad guy, so much more evil than Voldy (even in the books he was a disappointment). 😎
@@freemagicfun Nah Voldie is just your typical super bad guy in fantasy. Ultimate evil that works great for a story but you don't hate them because they are so unrelatable. Nobody knows a Voldemort. Umbridge is the perfect minor antagonist, because they are so relatable, she is basically a Karen incarnate. Given only a minor amount of power and immediately completely tripping on it. She's your typical bad middlemanager, or power hungry beat cop. Everyone has met someone like that. How often do you meet someone that openly wants to rule the world and start a massive war to create a fascist regime? You only hear of a handful of those people in history, almost nobody knows those people personally. Umbridge wouldn't work as the BBEG, but she's the perfect evil teacher. Voldie has a simular role to Sauron, a truely evil horrible monster that is there for the plot, but only a minor role as a character in the story (Sauron even less so, he's basically not characterised at all, but you get my point). Voldie is a challenge for Harry and basically just a plot device, Umbridge is a character in her own right.

I believe that the casting has been the one best thing, that they did in HP. Without a cast so spot on, we would never have had such amazing movies.
To make it clear, I think Coltrane made a very good job as Hagrid in all of the movies.
But as I heard for the first time, that Williams asked the crew PERSONALY for acting Hagrids part and even offered to do it FOR FREE, but was rejected imediatly as he wasn't british, I just couldn't held back my tears for him. Again, I think Coltrane made an amazing job and I think it was a great decision to cast him. But how many actors of Wiliams size would have ever asked out for a specific role by themself and even would have played it unpayed..? For me it shows exactly, how passionated Williams was and how badly he wanted to play Rubeus and as I can say, you'll hardly find this again in entire film industries.

Kid actors amaze me the most. they were just 9, 10 and so brilliant with their lines, expressions, wow! I can't imagine anyone except the OG cast, they fit so perfectly

I love the entire cast of Harry Potter the way it is, every single person was perfect for the role they got and that is what makes the Harry Potter movies so great. With that being said I believe the person who played young Tom did amazing and looked great but hearing that Joseph Morgan from TVD and The Originals was maybe gonna play him has me screaming he would’ve also been sooooo great!

I can’t imagine anyone else playing these characters. Reading the books when I was young and watching the movies, as I grew up they chose the right actors. I’m glad that the HP franchise chose only British actors, it makes sense. Hermoine and Luna were always my favourite characters, it just wouldn’t be the same. Tom Felton played Draco Malfoy so well, he was my childhood crush. It wouldn’t be the same without these characters, acting, it just wouldn’t.

I think the cast is perfect! If I was forced to change one actor, I would change change Ginny Weasley’s actress, Bonnie Wright. She is really good, but I feel like you could get someone better.

Sir Kenneth Branagh is one of the greatest actors in the world. Dame Maggie Smith is one of the greatest actresses in the world. And many other roles in Harry Potter went to world class actors. Helena Bonham Carter. One of the best actresses in film and television.
I read the books when they came out and had an idea about what all the characters looked like in my head. Thankfully the movie adaptation did not ruin them for me and I still see my characters in my head - apart from snape - Alan Rickman is snape to me! And the fact that JK wanted him for the part cements it!
Once stars become big they become captive to their on screen images. They stop taking risks which they took in the initial stages of their career.
Once stars become hot properties they loose their risk appetite and start playing safe.

The most devistating one that wasn’t pictured here for me is Aaron Taylor Johnson. He originally auditioned for young James but he lost to it but we still see him as the Fan-cast James now 😂

Hey.... it's almost a sure thing (like 80-90%) that in less than 30-40 years, probably in about 20 years.... there will be a new series of movies or a tv series about Harry Potter and I'm sure Daniel or anyone else from the original won't play those characters.

Also, Domhnall Gleeson auditioned for Stan Shunpike but didn't get the role, but he eventually got cast as Bill Weasley.

I really think Saoirse Ronan would have been a perfect Luna as well as Evanna Lynch, but maybe playing a part in a big franchise as HP would not be as beneficial to her career cause you have your name attached to it forever, even Emma Watson which is a terrific actress has her name attached to Hermione even though she’s bigger than that.
