You need a lot of hours to run them in (I'd recommend at least 50 before they loosen up properly), but you could still end up preferring the sound of the cheaper headphones depending on the type of music and the DAC you are using. With an S9 you are unlikely to be able to drive them properly. Also note that FLAC is NOT High Res - FLAC is just the codec not the resolution. So some FLAC files are "just" CD quality, which is what you were probably listening to. FLAC can be High Res, but if you get confused between the two then you're probably not listening to High Res. I've had mine for a couple of months and I'm still not 100% sure how I feel about them. They are really nice for classical and acoustic tracks, curiously they completely lack the usual over-boosted bass profile of cheaper Sony headphones for rock and electronica, but overall they seem to handle most music quite well and excel with string instruments on a modest scale - string quartets and acoustic-dominant bands. I'm not unhappy with them - they are usually available at a reasonable (~20%) discount on RRP, so are not quite as expensive as they seem.

The need of a DAC and AMP is needed to get the best of the Sony , u did not mention in video what amp

  • @HiFiInsider

was the test music uncompressed CD quality local files or from a streaming service? Z7 is more transparent than vmoda so you may be hearing the flaws in the music.

Nice vid, thanks! :) All headphones definitely need some burn-in for drivers to soften and settle. Normally it takes about 200 hours. I'd recommend you not to judge them before 50 hours! I'm getting mine in 2 hours btw. Will compare them to HD660s.

After listening to the review about mdr-z7m2, I was thinking about using analogy. We can't have one size fits all.
It is like comparing the vehicles between Honda Civic type R and Honda Accord Touring. Mdr-z7m2 is like Accord touring, we can't expect a lot of boost like Civic type R. Civic type R has a lot of boost, it's turbocharged. It's different design.
Mdr-z7m2 has smooth bass, like Accord Touring is very smooth in driving. Why we try to boost Accord like Civic type R ?
There is no way I can accelerate Accord like Civic. If we like to have headphone with bass , buy something else.
I have 2 headphones, Mdr-z7m2 and Mdr-1am2. It's like having 2 cars, Accord and Civic. If I like to listen music with bass, I use mdr-1am2.

In general... if you are testing headphones over $500 you really should be using a headphone amp.

The sony's need amplification. A smartphone can NOT properly power the MDR-Z7m2. no wonder it lost.

With all respect but the price is not only the sound. The V mota maybe equal but in my opion they are really ugly headphone. So the 900 is not only the sound but also the look/build quality. 650 would be consider price. It's all about personal preference.

(edited) Just saw that you reviewed them using a SAMSUNG S9 (mentioned in a comment lower)
. You can buy 20$ headphones and i guarantee they'll sound better than the Z7M2 on a smartphone. You need to learn about hi-fi headphones, or stop reviewing them. You just bought a tool and had no idea what it's used for. Hi end headphones have characteristics that can only be pushed out by more powerful and accurate dedicated DAC/AMP devices. They are NOT portable and NOT in any way designed to be driven by a puny low-quality smartphone dac/amp. Basically to make them sound good, you need to spend AT LEAST 200 $ on a Dragonfly RED usb (portable) DAC. That's the BARE minimum for such headphones. Testing it from ANY other source is futile. This review is bad, if you want to create valuable content on youtube, either reasearch what you're reviewing, or review stuff you know, like the V-MODA, they're consumer grade portable headphones. Talk about those, or get high end audio gear and talk about high-end headphones. Thumbs down, sorry.

    • @TheKamoteus
      @TheKamoteus Před 5 lety +4

I have the Dragonfly Red and it’s the worst purchase I’ve ever made. There’s a lot of cheaper options like the Sabaj DA3.
The Z7M2 isn’t really hard to drive and the S9 already have a decent DAC. Most phones have.
His review is his opinion. Just because you don’t agree does not make him wrong. This hobby of ours is very subjective.

He’s reviewing them for himself not you and therefore if the gear he uses in the review is what he uses with his headphones that is the right way to review the headphones. There are high end headphones that sound better than cheaper headphones with anything so it’s not an unreasonable expectation on his part. Good review for those who would use similar gear- there are plenty out there.

Jezzzzz you really need to get another job. To be a headphone reviewer you would need to test several hi end cans in different types of gear and believe me, $900 USD is not even close to an expensive hi end can. Quit man.
