- On this episode of Sounding Off we have Guitarist and Founder of the Progressive Metal (Djent) band Periphery! Yes, he does Djent.
PERIPHERY is a Grammy-nominated American progressive metal band based in Washington, D.C., formed in 2005. Their musical style has been described as progressive metal as well as Djent. This was fun!
Thanks again Misha!
Don't worry about going all geek-o-tronic on us, a lot of us like to nerd out on details. ^^
Hi, whats the guitar at 0:24 ?
Misha, about what you said about learning synthesis and orchestral arrangement after being a bit uninspired by metal guitar, watching you go through that through your instagram posts is what inspired me to do the same thing, and suddenly i'm writing a ton of music again. You helped me without even realizing it, so thanks for that.
My man...
Cool interview!
Hey kiko, I'd love to see you play some djent
How cool it would be if Rick does an interview with Kiko
Misha is one of the musicians that really inspires you
One of the best bands of this current era, everything from songwriting, live performance to production is flawless.
If you haven't do yourselves a massive favor and go and buy all of their records.... you will not be disappointed!
Love from Australia!
„Gearing up to record a new album“ hell YES
God damn Rick is on the strongest roll of anyone Ive ever subscribed to with his videos
Thanks John!
So then, this would be some of Roll involving a Rick, you would say? Like maybe something you would never want to give up, never want to let down or desert, perhaps?
One of the biggest names in modern music today.. “we don’t really make any money from it...we just make music for fun now.”
Legitimately one of the most depressing things I’ve heard in a long time.
....and yet you probably belong to the mob flaming Lars for putting his career on the line trying to avoid this state of things.
It shouldn't be though, it's kinda nice to be able to just make music for the sake of making music. That's how I got started and what made me happy in the beginning, and it's good to be able to have that dynamic now.
@Misha Of course!! By itself, it is truly a beautiful thing, and I fully understand where you're coming from. But it still feels a bit like you're saying that there's no such thing as a career as an artist in the music industry anymore, only marketing and sales. I'm not saying that the state of the industry isn't what it is, I think that is pretty clear to see. But I want to hear about what we can do to draw people back in to the idea of supporting artistry here in the US. It does seem bleak, but I think it's only up to us to try and turn things back around. We just need to know where to start.
Poul Winther Knudsen so true. I'm an old metal head and I didn't hate them for being against Napster way back when.
@Poul I think that's an amazing perspective that people never look at. They think that he was just trying to scrape a few more pennies from the album sales, but it was a legitimate reflex because file sharing was going to flip the industry on it's head. And look where we are now.. I'm not saying that I want to make millions of dollars just to play guitar, but we can't sit here and think that it's okay to trivialize the artistry that goes into the music that we consume.
Don't like the genre, but always enjoy listening to musicians. Always something to learn. Thanks.
That’s a great attitude!
I gotta admit I'm not the hugest Periphery fan but Misha is such a cool dude and obviously crazy talented.
Rick, youre doing millions of future pro musicians and fans an incredible service with these interviews. I am Mishas age and cant imagine listening to an interview with one of my favorite bands as a teenager where they discussed the industry and life as a pro.
Tosin Abasi would be godly.
This.
I don't know much about this guy's band, but he sure comes off as somebody who really knows his business, really sharp and clear-headed. Off to check out some Periphery now...
lead singer kills it for me unfortunately.
way too dramatic idk
Well good for you then.
Being too dramatic is bad lol I'm sorry Spencer can portray emotions through his singing well
I super enjoyed Periphery III! Hope you liked what you heard, OP. "Catch Fire" is one of those tracks that just grooves real great for me. Their other albums have some incredible stuff on it as well, but I think III is my favorite.
Another great interview. Rick, this is what makes your channel so amazing! Your appreciation for ALL musical styles is very infectious. Ive always like Periphery. They do a great job combining progressive metal with an almost pop appeal. Very listenable to a novice. Ive been writing some game music ideas and reference Periphery for their beautiful ideas, sound, and production. Misha seems like a great guy. He’s very articulate and down to earth. Thanks again…
Thank you Tom. It’s musicians like yourself that get it. Being able to appreciate all styles of music only expands your musical vocabulary. Most people become limited by their narrow musical tastes which typically happens in your 30s.This is really important for people that write music for film or TV.
Whatever Misha, you're excellent at mixing! Also I've been listening to you and tosin since 2009 dude! You turned me on to toon track bfd 2 and were the only person I gave a damn about who got a pair of opals.
Personally I make the music I like to listen to. But yeah, a few months after the release of a new album, I don't want to listen to it, having listened to the songs under a microscope so to speak, during the production cycle. So far I've just had pleasant surprises when putting on one of my own albums after that cool down period. Knock on wood. :-)
Easily one of the best channels on CZcams. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Rick.
Thank you for this. Not a producer nor a guitarist but i love this channel and Periphery so this was a fun vid. I cant imagine a single music student out there not watching your vids. Advanced classical or prog drummers, everyone should have a Rick in their lives. Where were you in 2007...
Never have I ever clicked so fast!
I really like rick! Compared to other people of his age he is very open minded and fun attitude towards this kind of music thanks for the video rick!
Hey Rick, what about a Sounding Off with Guthrie Govan? Is it possible?
I spoke with Guthrie about 6 months ago but haven't scheduled it yet. I will get on it.
Rick Beato Thanks, that is awesome
YES!!!
heard the same thing from other bands ... 15:28 ... but am honestly shocked that even THESE guys cant make a living from music ... while the "superstars" make more and more and more ... anyway: great interview! thanks loads! ;-)
That was really interesting, once again Rick thanks for introducing me to new artists, music genres and best of all personalities.
Saw Misha at a clinic in the UK this summer gone, wicked player and has a lot of insight and wisdom to share.
I was waiting for this
This was great! :) for a future guest if you can grab him, Mick Gordon would be excellent, Game music writer/Sound Designer/Producer , I reckon you guys would like geeking out.
That would be awesome!
I love the way you analyze the music and look at the things that make the music. This was an awesome interview, Misha is a very personable guy!
What a great Interview. I love that Rick is asking technical, interesting questions. You can tell Misha is actually enjoying this one.
Misha is a great endorser, a master of the contextualized plug.
This is awesome! So cool to see two amazing musicians on two sides of the spectrum of progressive music talk about the industry and the current state of music!
This interview was featured on Ultimate Guitar
Haven't really heard a Periphery album but tempted to hear one after this interview. I came here cause of the articles about making no money, and pretty much agree or understood where he was coming from for every concept he mentioned in the video. Great interview!
Great inspiration, i love how Periphery is open, musical and always surprising
These guys were amazing live!!
Mansoor 2020 - Make America Djent Again
I’ve watched remain indoors about 10 times
Way Cool Rick.....your getting really good at this....enjoyed this
This was absolutely great, thanks for making it happen!
Great job Rick!!!
Great video Rick! I'm a metal guy. Grew up on classic rock (97 Rock, Buffalo), country, alternative, 80s & 90s rap, 80s hair metal, classic metal and nowadays, European power metal and some screamy stuff. But when I'm not playing or trying to write riffs, I LOVE listening to smooth jazz. Totally chills me out, always a good groove to be had.
This was awesome! Can we get Aaron Marshall of Intervals on here???
Manny Plascencia Pliniiiii
Sounding off with Micheal League.
Wow he seems like a super cool guy, and really intelligent! He certainly speaks the truth as well. Thank you for this interview Rick. I love your channel!!!! :-)
OMG it actually happened!
Very cool to watch.. big fan of this channel, periphery, and Misha. I own a juggernaut 6 and precision drive. Very good stuff. I took my precision drive to practice the other day and ran through my bass rig.. killer pedal for that as well.
Ha it's hilarious to picture Misha watching old youtube playthroughs to relearn his own stuff.
Great video Rick and Misha! Another suggestion for someone to get on Sounding Off would be Trevor Rabin from YES with his very interesting career, writing 90125 before joining YES, his film scoring work, studio engineering/mixing skills, the new band "reunion" (YES feat. ARW) etc...
I’m glad that Misha was very clear on the state of the industry. I see a lot of kids jump on trends thinking that’ll catapult there career and they’ll make a lot of money. Plus, I think the genres are over saturated and convoluted. It’s too bad but hopefully the market will flip but good advice and got a lot from this episode.
YEAH!
Hell yes awesome!
This was awesome, thank you! Misha gives such great interviews. Very honest, insightful and honestly inspiring. Long live Periphery :-)
I always wondered whether he answered your question in the comments of the marigold video...now I know! Thanks :)
woah this was the best interview with misha I've seen!! thank you sooooo much
You're the greatest, Rick!
Bring Ben Levin please
This!!!
Agree
This!×2
Misha is such an inspiration.
Great video! I love Mishas view of music and metal and so on.
Analog anything has that indescribable feel and sound... I like analog tone so much more than digital, no matter what instrument.
Awesome video! Thanks for this one Rick, it was a total surprise.
FINALLY!!!! Love you Bulb, love you Rick!!!!
I knew it would happen, when you spoke to each other in the Djent video comments. Great booking Rick!
A video chat before the pandemic! Great interview Rick 👍
wow and i thought the channel couldn’t get any better
Awesome and honest interview here!
Great interview! Both of you guys are awesome. Love the content Rick =)
How did I miss this?! Love Misha, love Beato... This is the Reece's Peanut Butter Cup of videos!
It is utterly discusting to me that bands like periphery cant get those millions. They are by far the most talented band i have ever heard in my entire life.. And if they cant do it, something is wrong with the industry and with fan support PERIOD. The worth they have brought to people and music deserves that money PERIOD. Days of bands just having to have spectacular attitudes should be over. That is a FACT.
Maaan, I have never clicked so fast at a link before ahah
Misha is amazing
Sounding off with Mick Thomson!!!
Can't wait for the next album.
Great interview, Rick. Would love to see an episode with Pete Davis of Invalids.
Really great interview Rick. Twaz awesomeness
Yes!
Fantastic!
Excellent video. As always, it is packed with interesting information, and I like how you are interested on modern music such as Periphery's. I'd be interested if you could bring one of the guys of Animals as Leaders on one of your future videos, as they are well versed on making advanced yet well writen music!
Thanks to you too for making this one.
Yes, you do the music for free. However, having the music is what gives you the platform and fan base to even have the other forms of income.
yup
so if you didn’t have the music you wouldn’t have an income. it’s still pivotal
Metal is the gateway to rock’n’roll now.
Great interview! I'm heading out to check out Cubase. Thanks Rick!
I'm not a guitar player (keyboards), but this was an awesome interview!
ok i get you now Misha, wish i had seen this last week...great interview, subbed channel
this is a nice interview, not the same questions you hear every time...
always fun to hear misha!
Very clever questions Rick!
Great interview! Misha is the reason why all my money goes to sample libraries...
J-M Linde Music it's such an addiction my dude
Aw yis I am happy
Two of my favorite people on the internet on one video. Awesome stuff, thanks Rick, thanks Misha.
Amazing episode
Plini anyone?
Misha is awesome. It always baffles me when he keeps saying Periphery is not profitable at all; I've seen them live a few times and it's always packed. I understand that may not be the case outside major markets, but the way he talks it's like he makes $100 per gig.
As I said in the video, we might have generous guarantees, but after everyone is paid off, then we pay off our manager, then our business manager, then we split everything 5 ways, then we withhold 40% for self-employment taxes, there really isn't a lot left. Definitely not enough to cover rent/mortgage/bills let alone luxuries like health insurance. If I relied on Periphery money to get by, I would have to rent a room in my parents' basement and I would live below the poverty line.
Thanks for the reply, Mish. I wasn't doubting you or anything, it just insane to me that a successful band pays less than a nondescript office job. Looking foward to your JST amp sim.
Misha Mansoor I love that you are so active in answering fan questions and engage with people on CZcams. Thanks for elaborating on the business side of things.
Tosin Abasi on Sounding Off?
That would be amazing!
Best Misha interview
Excellent interview!!
Awesome
Great interview
Great interview!
How did i miss this?!
Cubase is the wormhole!!! I will never use anything else!!! ❤️
