I was at this game. If memory serves me correctly, there was a power outage and the lights went out. Tommy Emmanuel played the national anthem on his guitar as there was still power for the sound system. There were a group of St. George fans in front of us, and every time they scored this fella would turn around and start singing “when the saints go marching in”. The place was packed to the gills. They had let extra in.
Priddle's not a guy who gets a lot of wraps, but even though I was a massive Broncs fan, I really rated the guy. Made a lot of good ground and those round the corner offloads of his could be deadly.
Fun fact, this game is responsible for the broncos winning the 1993 premiership. When the broncos got home after this game, some bookie started mouthing off that he’d pay 1000-1 odds that Brisbane couldn’t win the comp. Well Kevin walters and Chris johns and Trevor gilmiester all eagerly took those odds and when they showed up at the bookies with $10,000 to put on it he’d lowered his odds to 75-1 but when Wayne got wind that they’d placed bets on em selves he was relieved because they were finally putting their money where their mouth was. Kevin walters should have won the Clive Churchill medal that year too.
Agreed RE: Walters. Though ultimately it was Sticky both dislocating and breaking his ankle 5 days before this game against Parramatta which won Broncos the comp that year ;)
We’ll never know how Broncos would have gone in the finals against a Raiders side with Stuart that year. Both great teams but Broncos peaked at the right time and their stars stayed healthy. They were that good in the big games it wasn’t really a shock that they won it from 5th, especially with Stuart’s injury killing off Canberra’s hopes.
