The state says six emergency sirens have been vandalized. Sources say more than 20 batteries were stolen from sirens in Punaluu all the way to Turtle Bay.
I never understood why the state stopped building secondary enclosures around the electrical panels like they used to do for the older generation sirens. The newer Modulator sirens aren’t even half as loud as the old ones so if one fails it leaves a massive area without coverage🤦♂️
They need more secure boxes on the control panels so this doesn’t happen again. Imagine if there was a tsunami and nobody knew cause the batteries were gone.
When I lived there in the 1970s I think they had a map of all the tsunami warning stations in the front blue pages of the phone book. Yah, what's a phone book, you say?
